Erik ten Hag | 2022/23 & 2023/24

The amount of times I've read 'he won us the cup' shows the mentality. They blame players for losses and Ten Hag apparently won us the cup. Nothing to do with the player who have shown time and time again they can play those tactics well. Ten hag won the FA Cup and the players finished 8th

I don't think I've ever read any manager have such direct wording over a team achievement.
This is what grinds my gears as well. He didn't perform some tactical masterclass this game, for a change his setup was just not suicidal amd the one everyone called for. The players though, left their lungs on the pitch , and somehow the cup was won solely due to EtH.

Even without the 18/19 season, this is far above par for us the last 20 years.. We had 10 points in the group stage in 19/20. Had 18 points in the 21/22 group stage..

If you compare this with the post ten hag years and go back pre ten hag 15 years, i think there are only 2 years which (top of my head) which are better or comparable to the above.

Which is still underwhelming. Ajax being extremely underwhelming for the last 20 years doesn't make underwhelming results any different.

He played his part in the final. His setup made City look pretty toothless until Doku came on and did some dangerous looking runs. It isnt often that City is made look toothless so its not like he didnt play his part. His subs scored against Liverpool too for example. Obviously the win isnt solely won by ETH but he deserves part of the credit for the win... like any manager would for winning a cup.

For those using the lazy Mourinho argument of winning 2 trophies in his first season, what teams did Mourinho beat in the final when he won those 2 trophies? Yes, thats right, the heavyweights of European football Southampton and a rather abject Ajax. Certainly Mourinho did not face a treble winning team and all conquering manager in Pep, did he?

Ah that old lazy argument of saying someone who wins 2 domestic cups while missing all objectives in the league and CL is the messiah. You caught us.

As for only beating pathetic little Ajax...... Copenhagen and Galatasary say hello. Mourinho also beat Guardiola's City on the way to winning the League Cup but never mind.

Oh he's definitely gone then spouting this crap, at the minimum he's pissed because he thinks he might be sacked. Good chance he goes down the LvG route and talks shit about us once he's gone, excuses galore.
The LvG route? You mean every manager thats left.

How was it not EtH? Plenty of other teams have left their "lungs on the pitch" and got nothing out the game.

The players actually did EtH asked for a change.

Typical caf comment that. Spend all year complaining about the players, they finally do what they were asked and its all the players

That's nothing to do with INEOS, though. He's referring to what it was like last season before INEOS took over.

Not with any effort, no.

I'm actually begging you to claim otherwise
So the gaps in the midfield time after time were due to players not following instructions with "any effort". See this is why some people mention the word charlie uniform lima tango here.

Why would the players not do what the manager asked?

Maybe because they can't ?

It doesn't mean they haven't tried , they just aren't able . The only way that changes , is with players who can .

Transfers wouldn't need to exist if a coach could coach any player to do exactly what he wants .

Performances aside does anyone else not think that Ten Hag is very unlikeable?

I think that clouds my judgement a bit. I think he’s an absolute bellend.

It’s fecking insane to suggest the players aren’t doing what the manager wants or aren’t listening to what the manager is saying.

Especially when he chooses the same players most of the time. Besides, half of the time we were getting beat or playing badly, he was out here telling us we played well and dominated. He was clearly happy with most of what he was seeing.

Think INEOS decision is already made.

ETH will be thanked and ‘let go‘ when he returns from holiday.

I’d expect a decision this week to be fair.

Only the decision on which font to use in all presentations given during the review.

I know Blanc is pushing for Arial but Ratcliffe and Brailsford favour Calibri

He is not going anywhere. Why would they keep him on if they had to fire him anyway. He is staying!!

Agree, but compared to his peers and predecessors at Ajax he overachieved massively.

Many Ajax fans - myself included - will put him up there with Van Gaal and Michels as most successful Ajax coaches ever..

Sorry but him being underwhelming with Ajax in Europe is utter nonsense, from every angle possible..

Yeah. I seem to remember it being quite quick. Surely this is an indication that ten Hag will be our manager next season. If not, the indecisiveness of INEOS, which I hoped they were bringing to the club, is something that would slightly annoy me.

The reports about the 'review' said it would last about a week - if so, you'd think we would find out if he's leaving sometime this coming week. If he's leaving, there will obviously be a statement, but if he's remaining, the club may feel that they don't need to say anything (since it's the default position anyway). I think it's reasonable to assume that if we haven't heard anything by the end of this week, then he is staying on.

Wait. I thought we were told he hadn't lost the dressing room and players were still on board. Now we find out they have just been ignoring him all season(or just the games we lose anyway)

Do you realise how insane that sounds? He set us up well in the final, and it showed. He hasn't set us up well during the season, and it showed. That's it. No big conspiracy.

Ah the old ''the tactics weren't working because the players weren't doing what they were told'' theory.

The entire squad decided in pre-season to ignore Erik's instructions all season and Erik said nothing about it. Just let them carry on.

When players do the same move, same pass and same run all the time, it is not them ignoring instructions, it is part of the instructions. All evidence we have suggests that the players have followed Ten Hag's instructions all season.

You could argue that they aren't good enough to pull it off, or that a lack of personell necessitated counter intuitive instructions, but they certainly executed his instructions faithfully all season.

If he's not sacked tomorrow he has to be staying. Anything else and it's incompetence on the part of the new team, and lets not pretend Ashworth and Berrarda aren't already involved in some capacity.

But he did get knocked out by Pochettino with Spurs in his best Champions league run with all his favourite players including De Jong

Monday surely has to be the day when it’s on or out. Whatever the decision, work has to get started for the new season.

Yep I have the same feeling, have Ineos pulled a complete left field new coach, someone that the media know nothing about someone like Zidane who we know has been learning English and is very friendly with Blanc.

Otherwise I see a hugely underwhelming De Zerbie coming in which will be a bigger headache than appointing Tuchel?

I believe they mostly tried, too. There is a whole lot of reasons why things didn’t work and that needs to be sorted out.

Injuries of course are a big part of it, but are not enough to explain some of the diabolical performances.

I do think some players have let down Ten Hag, but he had to play them anyway because there was no alternative.

When things come together, you can get a performance like the FA cup final.

-Players playing as a unit rather than individuals
-Aggression
-High work rate
-Tactics spot on
-Great individual performances
-Belief

When a few of these elements aren’t there, team performances will suffer.

The most important thing to do is create a winning mentality. Only hard work, good planning and actually winning games will get us there.

What’s needed is a slightly longer view. I don’t think Pep-ball will be as big a thing in two years time. But Arsenal are a decent model. They are going places. To compete with thus, we need to continue to develop the young players. To get to a competitive points haul in the Premiership, we have to improve across the board. We need to learn better how to defend, to work as a unit, to get a functioning attack going.

Off the playing field, we need a functional football structure. We need to get costs down, sell players and fix the wages budget. We need to sign new players and integrate them. We need a working squad that will allow us to compete on multiple fronts. We need to identify and fix the issues with injuries. Lots of work to be done.

Zidane would only ever be interested in this job IF we already had the squad in place and just needed a manager to put it all together
