He's not any better on the right though. One of those players who has all the physical capabilities but just has brain farts all the time.
Strong, can run for days, good injury record, hard working, good personality, decently ambipedal, decent cross and shot. Looks so good on paper and then he just does dumb shit on the pitch. Would be good as a bit part player but never a starter or someone to rely on.
Nuno Mendes, Dimarco or Davies would be dream signings for that LWB position, we would look so much more deadly if we could attack from wide on both flanks.
Malacia is at the very least serviceable at the left while Dalot right now is well below par no matter where he plays and has been for a good while. I think Amorim rates his countryman in all fairness, based on what he's said specifically about him.
Dalot seems like the teacher's pet type of squad player to me, the type who says the right things and shows the willingness in training but his enthusiasm doesn't come close to matching his actual quality and consistency on the pitch. Rangnick and ETH both played the heck out of him as well. This is what Amorim has said about him:
"He's very powerful,". "We have to rotate him sometimes because he looks like he is always fresh but it's not like that. He's not a machine.
"I think he plays better on the right and we will manage to put him also on the right, but he's a very good player, very powerful that can play both sides.
"Nowadays, a player that can play both sides is like...it's perfect because you can put him in different positions.
"I expect the same as you saw in the last year - a great player that can help the team and is really a team player.
"You can feel it in every play, the way he lives the game, so it's very important for us."
I don't think this is merely blind praise, he seems to rate him and it's showing in his selection. The only other players he's singled out with such high praise are Bruno and Amad
He seems like the kind of player that always gives it his all. Same as Amad and Bruno. I'm sure that is also seen in training, and it's a trait that managers value the most especially someone like Amorim.
As for why he's being played all the time, it's simple. There is no alternative. Malacia is not upto full fitness, and it would be very careless to put him in until his confidence has built up.
Garnacho is a good shout for the LWB role and I think he can really do well there. I feel like he's at his best when he's out wide, and isolated with the defender. He's quick, good at tracking back, likes to take on players, has a decent cross. But I'm not sure where his head is at, if he thinks he's too "big" to play as a LWB.
