If Maguire went to City in 2019, 5 years later I can guarantee that any suggestion that he isn't a top 5 centre half in the world would be laughed at.

@Leethal has a point
Says more about Guardiola than it does about Maguire, there's a reason pretty much everyone who plays under him looks great.

What has Messi done for us to warrant being called a good football player? What sort of argument is that? A player needs to show he is great for us before he becomes a good player? He is a good football player because he has shown a very high level in PL and CL.
He has been injured for us and played only 500 minutes in a deep midfield role most of the time. What do you expect him to do?

The irony of you talking about agenda. Half your posts are about how shit Mount is

Well given this is a De Ligt thread and they’re bringing up Mount, you might be on something about an agenda…

I guess we'll never know

I know, right? What is with RedCafe's obession with continuing to promote the same fables year after year. It's like the Fred one. Pep was never in for Fred, just like Pep was never in for Maguire.

It's just some fairytale bs for our fans to feel like we got the steal on someone.

Just goes to show the eye test is miles better than all these BS effing stats, seems like supporting a team has become like playing FM these days

Stats are useful but for a position like CB it adds little value, even the ones like aerial duel and aerial duel win %.

Their interest was reported by John Percy who's the single most reliable journalist for East Midlands clubs so City were in for Maguire, they just weren't willing to go as high as we did.

Why couldn't he? He showed that he can several times at United so I'm baffled at these "can't play out from the back" and "can't play in a high line" takes

His passing is ok but not the level that would let Pep keep him, he would have fallen back in the CBs list pretty quick.

I'm sure Pep was in for Fred as well given their subsequent interest in Kalvin Phillips. He would've been one possible option for select tactical situations had he gone to City. Not the day to day starter he was for several years for us. The midfield complement they have is: Rodri, KdB, Alvarez, Kovacic, Nunes, Phillips. You can make many different kinds of midfield threes with those players. Meanwhile every single other club hobbles along with 3-4 starting quality mids and a pretty quick drop in quality after that.

Guardiola himself confirmed City's interest in Maguire after he signed for United while stating they simply couldn't afford him .

Could have been a dig at United as well because Utd were spending money like a madman at the time.

Could be but they did actually made bids for Maguire and went as high as 60 m if I am remembering it correctly so the interest was definitely there .

€65m + €10m in (easily achievable) add-ons and the two should be yours would be my guess.

€65m is too much for De Ligt, BM wants him out, they paid about €67 for him, and since BM wants him out, it's obvious a a slightly lower fee should be expected, €50m is about right for De Ligt and perhaps €15m for Mazraoui.

Ornstein exclusive did not mention how much United offered to Bayern for both players, so if I am guessing, it might be the case United starting with lower fee which Bayern rejects and then they both continue to negotiate, but I am guessing here.

Yeah, our fan base is something else at times

I suppose every single player really does have their little cult following of sorts. Doesn’t matter how good or shite they are!

Oh yes, another incredible RedCafe narrative that Pep and City fake an interest in "bad" players so that United will panic and overpay to sign them

The most reputable journalists confirming City's interest in said players doesn't matter I guess

Totally uninformed posters laughing at others

I guess it's easier to disregard facts and laugh because in hindsight you try to look smart, instead of realizing that for any player the environment is the most important thing that has the biggest say on how well they are able to perform in a team

I'm sure Messi would've scored 91 goals in 2012 if he was playing for Aston Villa instead of Barcelona, and I'm sure Rúben Dias would've looked like a world beater if he was playing for United last season.

This inability to understand something so obvious and so simple is why Foden is such an overrated player as well

Confirmed bids say otherwise, takes so little research to confirm these things before rushing to the forum to wrongly criticize others.

I’ve found a new friend. Someone that can see the great over hyping of Phil Foden once out of a Man City team. He’s no better than Jadon Sancho. Maybe even worse.

you bought him for 65, now you want 60 for him . He is not wanted on high wages should not be more than 45m.
*bought him for 67, and now want 50 for him according to reports.

Maguire has a fantastic diagonal pass out to the left. He's capable of decent passes through the middle of the pitch as well, but he dawdles and takes far too long to make those passes which allows the opposition to shut down passing lanes.

Part of being good at playing out from the back is being able to make quick decisions about who and when to pass, and that is the exact opposite of what Maguire does. You only have to look at the difference between Maguire and Martinez to see that. Hell, even Yoro in his first preseason match showed more impactful passing.

 Well I'm not sure Sancho would be a player I put ahead of Foden but there are a good number of players that I would put ahead of him and it would definitely be controversial. He has good qualities but he's the definition of a system player to me. Really good and effective at what he mostly does at City: Receive in his little 10 yard zone on the edge of the opposition box, where he can turn and shoot very well...but he's not the best player in the Premier League like some posters claimed and not even a top 3 best and most important player for City IMO.

He can't really play out of the back though. His line breaking passes into midfield aren't great, so he prefers to ping it into the flanks instead, that's all good but he ponders on the ball for far too long as he doesn't have the natural ability to play quickly.

The high line part should be pretty easy to understand, it's why he's only ever looked good for England as Southgate doesn't push his defenders up or played with a 3 at the back.

He's the same kind of tier as Mctominay and AWB in my opinion. People are convinced he's good enough for United but in reality their level is midtable at best.

Not only McSauce or AWB but 99% of our team is mediocre.

I wrote a big write-up about how our players playing in any position require another player to complete them.

In short..

You need Dalot and AWB combined to have a MAN United level Right Back. Someone who is comfortable on the ball (Dalot) & someone who is perfect in defending 1 v 1 (AWB) . But now the problem is those are two human beings  you can't play with 2 RB.

De Gea and Onana
De Gea was a god is goalkeeping while poor in playing from back or composure.
Onana is good in playing from the back + in composure but poor in goal keeping. But those are 2 goal keepers. You can't play with them both.

Come to Bruno and Mount
He god is playing first time balls, never get injured but he can't dribble, can't receive the ball in half turn, lightweight, not press resistant
Mount can receive the ball on half turn, can dribble but he's injured every single time.

Come to Rashford and Garnacho.
Go to Maguire and Licha. Same same problem one can play from the back, the other wins aerial balls

Same same problem.

All over the pitch, we have at best 60% in talent quality of players and it shows in where we finish in the league + how poor we are.

People just have coping mechanics now.

The squad by itself can not win anything, we need a inch perfect manager who knows the extract the maximum from these just above average players.

Dalot has proven himself good defensively over the last two seasons. He is also fantastic at defending the back post aerially. He’s not AWB 1-on-1 but quite literally no one is.

That is why I wrote €65m+€10m for BOTH. Meaning de Ligt and Mazraoui.

I’m confused. All the reports are that Bayern want 50 million euros for De Ligt, not pounds, and Mazraoui had a fee agreed for 16 million euros (BBC) + 3m euros add ons.

So for me, 55 million POUNDS gets this done easily and we should aim at less as €50m (De Ligt) is £42m so we’re not gonna give them exactly what they want, we’ve gotta negotiate

Sky Germany is saying Bayern and Leverkussen are getting closer for Tah, for about 25 million euro + 5 million add ons.

That’s a lot cheaper than De Ligt, and maybe he’s even better than De Ligt. Yes I know the difference is his contract expires next year and De Ligt has till 2027. We should have tried Tah from the beginning.

Tah plays in a back three and I'd prefer De Ligt over him. Also Tah is several years older, which seemingly is against INEOS strategy. Wary of signing Leverkusen players after their season.

Played in a back four in all the games Germany played at the Euros. So he is capable of that.

To be fair, Pep has got rid of plenty of centre backs who didn't cut it under him. Demichellis, Mangala, Mari, Denayer, Otamendi and Sandler off the top of my head, who were all either expensive, or highly rated young prospects.

Tah is 28 as well. Not the sort of signing we should be looking at.

We just bought Varane and Casemiro at 28 and 29 respectively, and the entire forum thinks those were big mistakes of short term planning, so at least your opinion is a rather novel one.

Yeah hopefully Pimenta channels his inner Raiola and starts turning tables over in boardroom
