After it was 2-0 there was a long ball he came charging forward to anf hacked it away when he could have just stayed in the box and held it comfortably. I was laughing so hard

Dinosaur football fans who fail to understand that football does evolve accept it.
Yeah I never understand the whole mentality with

We didn't concede so can't complain

If we want to get better, then we need to move on from ddg. Nothing against him and hopefully gets his hands on the cup later this month. But his strengths do not overweigh his weaknesses

Him, Maguire and Fred are just golden trinity of deficiency in composure on the ball.

Shocking passing and could have cost us after few minutes after he panicked after simple cross(in which Dalot and Maguire played their part too) and for some reason rebounded the ball to the worst position possible instead of picking it up or at worst rebounding it to the corner. Always thought his defending with his legs was overrated because he sometimes uses his legs for saves that really shouldn't be those kind of last push saves.

Did some good saves overall, but far from perfect. Him and Maguire are really terrible combo.

Wasn't the only one making bad passes that could have cost us big time (Shaw and especially Maguire) but it is getting harder and harder to defend the opinion that we don't need a better goalkeeper.

Made some decent saves again so fair play but he makes me so nervous with his feet. The guy just can't pass out from the back at all.

400th Premier League game and a clean sheet. The disrespect is embarrassing.

The amount of crosses and corners that were inside the 6 yard box and he’s stuck to his goal line had me shouting at the tv. Just so passive and weak.

Don't see how saying we need a better keeper next season or he's not good at claiming crosses, controlling the box or passing out is disrespect.

Please explain how it is

I’m his biggest critic but fair play today he made a couple good saves. Poor with his feet.

If you don’t see his weaknesses - look at EVERY team when they have a corner against us. They PILE his 6 yard box. Every team KNOWS he can’t claim a high ball. It’s every single corner against every single opposition.

Legend but needs replacing in the summer.

And 400 apperances later, 5-6 managers later, hes still the no1.

Nuff said.

yeah, 1 PL title in that reign whilst being part of the worst United squad in the last 30 years.

Nuff said indeed.

There’s nothing disrespectful about it. If a player is on the decline, it doesn’t matter how good he used to be. Clubs stand still trying to be respectful. Football is a ruthless sport, what you were, means nothing compared to what you are now.

If we're watching this united team these past few weeks and think replacing his is priority were nuts.

We need a worldclass 9 and the an eriksen upgrade so eriksen is out first bench option, not Fred.

After that, maybe de gea then but you could still put another midfielder and and back up 9 ahead

Yep they just lump it in the six yard box and hope for the best because they know De Gea won't claim, and is unlikely to come and get a good punch on it. In fairness today he did come to a front post corner and get a decent punch on one, nothing spectacular but better than the usual from him.

He was ok today overall other than the usual issue, and he deserves credit for his 400th game. But we really do need to move on from him.

Would have been alot worse, without de gea being our player of the year for a four year spell.

Bollocks.

A keeper who plays with more composure and doesn't just lump the ball to noone under the slightest pressure is a must. He did at least one today where Leeds just ran straight down the pitch and had a shot.

In the first Leeds kept forcing the ball go to him and Maguire because they knew neither of them could beat the press with a decent pass. They just stand there and trickle balls to each other. As soon as Martinez came on he starts playing balls forward and straight away you can see the difference it makes to the team.

Put a keeper in there who can actually pick out a 30/40 yard pass to beat the press and isn't afraid to play under pressure and getting out from the back will be done much quicker and much more frequently. Watching him Maguire stand there in that first half stroking balls around with no purpose at all was fecking painful.

I think there was 1 bad pass? 1 good pass too, right at the start, to Weghorst.
Routine saves, from awkward angles. 1 punch.
Overall average.

Saw the highlights, I was being a bit harsh on the saves - rebounds could have been a bigger problem, he did well. More than reflexes or saving headers or saving with his feet, getting the rebound away from danger has been his biggest strength.

It's funny that one of them almost became an own goal when his save bounced off Maguire - it always seems to happen when Maguire is around.

I mean you say it's not much of a priority, but then you have it as somewhere between the 3rd and 5th signing to be made.

Given we usually target around four main signings every summer and the goalkeeper sitaution has to be sorted to some degree this summer (given De Gea and Heaton's contract situations, Henderson wanting to leave and Butland being on loan) that still puts him in frame for an imminent upgrade.

So you see it as our no.1 priority? I just can't get behind that. 3rd at best for me.

Yes but he isn’t to that standard now. That’s what some fans need to accept. He once was brilliant, he isn’t anymore. Simple as that. His shot stopping has declined which was his best attribute. Now the other parts of his game are being exposed. Surely this is clear to see?

Good clean sheet, several nice saves. Another cross punched today. Not good with his passing, though.

I have him 3rd to 5th out of maybe 6 at most? And if we buy a top class 9 we probably won't buy much more. You're then talking next summer to replace him at the earliest.

Gk
Starting 9
Sub 9
Starting midfielder
Back up midfielder
Back up Cb

Where do you rank gk?

Rooney got it worse and he did much more for United than De Gea.

Once again, people are claiming there were multiple crosses he should have claimed (I counted one) and multiple bad passes (again, there was objectively 1). Always a ton of exaggeration in this thread.

Could he have been better with long passing? Yes. But he was far from the main issue there - the 2 starting CBs were absolutely hopeless, and the rest of the team wasn't great. Only Martinez imposed himself and passed with authority.

Rooney was a shambles near the end of his time here (maybe last 4-5 seasons actually). DDG hasn’t been Rooney levels of bad, I’ll give him that.

Great personal milestones for him to reach today. 400 Premier League appearances for us. One more and he’s clear in third place behind Scholes and Giggs.

I do.

It's probably the most important position in terms of playing with a highline, playing out and retaining and recycling possession.

He's not good at any of those things and it's holding the rest of the team back.

Sure.

But of De Gea, the two starting CBs and the two starting CMs, only De Gea is first choice in our team in those positions. We know the others aren't that good, that's why we play other players ahead of them there when we can. But De Gea is a permanent fixture in the team, as are all the weaknesses he brings.

Also, this is the De Gea thread. Rightly criticising him for weaknesses that will place a ceiling on the team's potential for as long as he's first choice doesn't preclude us from criticising other players too. We just don't need to do it in this thread.

Only Martinez imposed himself and passed with authority.

Do you not see it as a problem that a guy who is only in the door 6 months imposes his authority on the defence and on the ball more in a few minutes than the guy who's been there over 10 years has ever managed?

If you can get someone like Raya for as little as 15m and turn it down that's nuts

I think he had a significant period when he was Rooney levels of bad and I would argue he cost us more in that period.
