It is. The club can focus on bigger issues and our actual problems, like scoring goals.

Binning DDG off and receiving no fee would have meant potentially dipping into funds desperately needed elsewhere. Which would have been unacceptable.

We rank 10th for goals scored.
We rank 5th for goals conceded.
We rank first for clean sheets.

It's blatantly obvious where we are dropping most points. The hysterical reactions to anything DDG does when we can't hit a barn door are boring and until we start putting the ball on the net with far more consistency, it won't matter at all who the keeper is.

So yeh, it's a positive.

What a clueless way to look at football

It makes sense. He's out of contract in the summer, Hendo will likely be sold + have no reserve keeper. Keeping him for another year or 2 isn't the worst decision. What else are we going to do, roll into the new season without a recognized keeper?

Buy one? I know pretty bold

A new number one and De Gea staying as number two on reduced wages would be perfect for me. He would be a quality backup keeper.

(But we all know we won't be getting a new keeper and he will still start next season.)

Problem is what is the new first choice keeper want if the second choice is the highest paid GK in the league?

And in most situations, one is more important than the other if you are aiming for the top.
Right but this is changing the topic.
The whole conversation started with ddg is the reason we lost, hence the response in turn saying there are two statements which aren't the same.

Why the feck would you give him a new contract when there's absolute no guarantee his number 1 next season?

This club is run by morons, we'll be watching City dominant football for the next 20 years If we keep making idiotic decisions like this

Yup, it makes perfect sense. Henderson wants out or at least he burnt his bridges at the start of preseason and both Butland and Heaton are not good enough. We all want a new number one goalkeeper, but unfortunately with the proposed sale of the club and the upcoming financial fair play restrictions it's not easy to find a suitable keeper.

We do see it, we just don't see it as the main priority. Neither to the club seemingly. We are horrendous in front of goal and our midfield can't retain the ball.

We do need a striker quite clearly.

But do you not think one of the main reason we struggle to retain the ball is because we can't play through a press thanks to De Gea being awful at playing from the back and when we do get into sustained attack mode we struggle to maintain it because we can't implement a high defensive line to squeeze the space and be able to counter-press effectively because De Gea is a terrible sweeper and can't play behind a high defensive line?

It makes zero sense. Buy a number one keeper. Our rivals wouldn't swap their number 2 keepers for De Gea because he doesn't have the required skill set.

De Gea is a massive issue and problem. I have no idea how you or anyone else can't see it.

Probably because he's not, especially relative to our actual issues which for anyone actually watching us play,. doesn't need explaining.

49 goals... 10th ranked on the League...

One of the oldest factoids about football is that goals win games. And at Manchester United, goals are something of a rarity. We are much, much better at stopping goals going in that we are at scoring them.

Ok, well here's an idea. Sign more than one player.

It speaks to a well-run club to have 2 goalkeepers on more than £100k a week, neither of whom anyone wants starting for us next season.

I like Dave. If he wants to stay as competition/mentorship for the new keeper that seems fine.
He wants to stay and is ok with a reduced role because even on massively less wages he is still grossly overpaid. And what exactly you want him to teach to a younger keeper?

Lost a point would be the factual argument though. Because without scoring ourselves, that's the best we could have got.

How much are they gonna pay him?

I think he'd be able to offer very insightful perspective on dealing with the pressures of starting out at Man Utd. He had a difficult early period here before he settled.

ETH wants him, hence the new deal. Trust the manager

It shouldn't even be his decision to make.
It should be Murtough's and if he has sanctioned it then he should be out of the door once new ownership comes in .

And Ten Hag won't last long either if he persists with De Gea for next season.

I can’t wait until we are taken over and the people making these stupid decisions are thrown out of the club. This was the perfect time to get rid of De Gea now we are likely stuck with him for 4 more years.

Who’s next Fred? Martial? Maybe Phil Jones.

This could come back and bite ten hag on the ass. He’s a decent manager but I do not trust him with transfers/contract renewals and pray the new owners get someone in to handle that side of things.

I can't think of another position where the club would get more return on investment from signing an upgrade. For around £30m would could get a keeper who is better with his feet, able to sweep up, not a liability at crosses and a better shotstopper

It's almost like we just have ed Woodwards mate in charge

Contract renewals are done by the club, I doubt the manager really has a say. You only have to look at the renewals we’ve made in recent years, Jones, Williams etc. The club needs new ownership asap!

Noone knows at this point, but would be surprised if it was only like half of what he is on now and I think even thats too much.
I really dont think he is one who thrives under pressure.

I'm imagining than in pure wages per week it will be less than half what he is on now.

Even if we are really broke let him leave and give Henderson a go he can't be worse than him .
