No he wasn’t. He’d been great from pretty much when he arrived up to the end of 2018; six years if you don’t count his first year acclimatising to the league. But that disastrous World Cup in 2018 seriously dented his confidence and he was pretty awful the entire season following.
It was at the end of that awful season that in true Woodward style we gave him the huge pay rise
The reports that the club wants to move him on and it’s only ETH that wants to keep him have a number of possible explanations. How about:
- The press are talking out of their collective arse.
- It’s true and ETH genuinely rates him, or at least regards getting rid of others first as more important.
- The club and ETH are actually in agreement, but Arnold/Murtough have stepped forward to take the flak. Dave has plenty of ardent fanboys and ETH won’t be popular if he’s shipped out.
