What has happened to Herrera? My favourite player last season - he hasn't even been up to scratch this year, not ever looking like the player who got 11 assists last season.

I think he just cant play in a midfield 2. Last season he had two of Fellaini/Pogba/Carrick next to him, this meant he had someone behind him to control the tempo and someone in front of him who would attract players. When he used to play as a AMF he still had support from 2 behind him which gave him the freedom to drift around.
Hes a good squad player to have but unless we start playing a 433 i just dont see room in the squad for him

It would be a shame to lose him ahead of the likes of Lingard, Fellaini et. al. For sure he is very overrated by our fans but he is a solid squad player who when called upon can put in a solid shift.

Definately should be included in a deal for a world class player from the Spanish league. The guys heart is in it but for me he is not a top six midfielder. He looks busy alright and can do a job but he really is Spain's answer to Tom Cleverly.
I have watched him a lot when he gets his chance and all I see are return passes that are too fast and too hard. He receives the ball and has time to turn and push forward yet his next move is usually very negative. He is such a Van Gaal player it's unreal. His attitude is always spot on though but it's quite obvious why he never gets a sniff for his national team.
He has had about 4 or 5 games that made people stand up and take notice but most of the time he is average or just below. I do love the guy and he shows genuine love for the club but that can't be enough for use to compete at the top on a regular basis.

I like him and at his best he's a joy to have on the field but that level is rarely reached. The benefits of his key attributes are also negated quite heavily by Matic who does everything he does and a lot more.

Pretty ridiculous that buying world class players if they are available is considered bad.
We buy badly, mostly average players and that is why the team doesn't "gel" into a "rhythm" while we wait for it. Look at how many players City signed in 2 summers. Didn't take them long to get into "rhythm" because most of them are top quality.
Btw, Saul loves Atletico too much to leave. So maybe, if Herrera goes to Atletico, we may have an edge in signing Griezmann ahead of Barca, if rumors of their interest are true.
That's not how I feel at all. I feel we buy great players, only to make them look average. And we buy average players, only to make them look poor. It's a recurringtheme for the past few years.

he is poor because the team's structure is poor. Go and watch him under Bielsa and watch him now. He is used as some sort of destroyer. Give him to a manager that actually coaches properly;y and he will blossom, not this negative pos Mourinho. The fact that he was being compared to Kante last season says it all really.
What should his position and task be? I ask this especially since he was one of the best players last season while not coached properly supposedly.
