Poor yesterday. I've said it before and been criticised, offers nothing in games where we will have the lions share of the ball.

If you disagree, before you come back at me with some "PoTY" nonsense or some stats about being better than Kante watch the game again. Stoke actually let Ander have the ball because his passing range is so limited he can't hurt anyone. How many times did he aimlessly clips passes out for throws or straight out for goal kicks?

I think Ander is a throwback to the "not bad but not quite good enough" signings that came to epitomise Moyes and LvG.

Save Ander for the games where we will have less of the ball. In games we dominate possession is almost redundant

Agree if we had someone like Silva or De Bruyne there the game would have panned out differently.

If we had Harry Kane up front it might have as well.

I can see what point you are trying to make but it doesnt really work since Rom has 4 PL goals already (Kane has 2) and they have all come at crucial moments in games so you can't really argue he isn't contributing

We still have a few of these players who for me would not get into a real top side. Darmian, Blind, Mata, Rashford (yet), Martial (yet), Herrera and Fellaini stand out amongst other more debatable ones. These players are mostly fine but just lack that little bit of star quality (or in the case of Martial and Rashford a bit of know-how) to make the difference in a game like yesterday.

I think Herrera's main problem is he isn't going to run past opponents, with or without the ball, and he isn't going to knock a 45yard killer pass so if he isn't doing his "midfield destroyer" job I am not really sure what his contribution is

DISCLAIMER - Herrera is an above average player, a credit to the club and a useful squad player. Have to add this at the end of any Herrera posts or you get 17 notifications from people telling you you know nothing about football!

He's so average he's not particularly good at anything apart from running around and petulant fouls.

He's not a bad squad player but we look a lot better with a two man midfield and he offers nothing offensively.

How can you say that after 1 game?

The guy was the best player in the squad last season and he will be very important to us again this year. Jose could have played 2 in midfield against Stoke in hindsight but there will be many games this season where he will have to play 3 and Herrera will be vital, his energy and pressing really is great when we don't have the ball and he also has quality with it just let him play a few games before diving in and calling him average - you surely weren't saying that last season?

I like how a player who had most assists last season in our team, both in PL and overall, despite playing defensive role, is seen as shit in the attack. He was much better yesterday than both Pogba and Matic, and had far more influence on our attacking game than both of them who brought absolutely nothing, but yet Herrera is seen as average after yesterday's game.

Wtf  Have you forgotten the last 2 seasons or not taken into account the fact that this is his first game back AND we had to recover from an international break?

Surprised by how much time and space Fletcher was afforded to pick the diagonal balls. That's precisely what Herrera is in the side to prevent.

My problem with playing all 3 midfielders at once was that we had too many midfielders doing pretty much the same thing. None of the midfielders were ball playing midfielders & as a consequence the rest of the attack seemed separated from our midfield.

Not hererra's fault; more like a questionable tactic.

wondering if Mouriniho regrets changing a winning side. Don't replace something that is not broken.

That was his first start, wasn't it? Yes, it was a bad game, but I don't think he is a bad or "average" player at all. The game was calling for more offensive setup and Mou got his tactic wrong in that sense. If Herrera came in as sub, and Mou wanted to have more cover in midfield after United take the lead, I think that would be more appropriate. It was an off day for the team anyway. For now, I am just glad it wasn't a defeat.

Plenty more games for Herrera and others to play and pick up form.

For the long term it's a step in the right direction.

He will simply need to rotate the squad to get the best possible results this season.

He was active, but it was a first game back from injury. For us to win league, I think he has to be in form.

I always think he's a player who struggles a lot without playing. His passing tends to be off and his tackling poorly timed when he's been sitting on the bench.

We need him big time now Pogba looks injured.

The forum being bipolar as ever. Last season he was "better than Kant"e, now he's below average and the bane of our problems.

He didn't have a great game against Stoke but I'll stand by what I said after that game. He's our backup to Pogba and Matic, there's no benefit to playing him with them.

It'll be Fellaini starting today but I'd have no problem with Herrera alongside Matic as long as the third player is creative - ideally Mkhitaryan.

His form dropped a bit to start the season, now hope he comes back into it quickly. He usually rises to the occasion with responsibility so lets hope for the best.

He's no where near consistent enough to be on the same level as Kante. It's why he's not as highly rated.

Time to step up big time. He's one of my favourite players. I would really like him to make more high risk forward passes because I know he's capable of it. Think he's been to sideways recently. With pogba out we will need to rediscover that creativity and energy in midfield.

Agree with that. Problem for me with Herrera is it's generally 2-3 mediocre games and 1 excellent and that just isn't enough for me. Because he is a great guy though it seems he cannot be criticised on this forum very often which I find strange.

He's got so much more to his game than Kante. Kante is insanely limited but it's ok, because he's Kante. Last year Herrera was our player of the season, he didn't get they by being inconsistent.

Literally what more does he have to his game than Kante because I don't see it.

Really? It's plain to see he's much better technically and creatively. I thought even he's most ardent supporters accepted that.

We're playng Everton at home, Pogba is injured, and he still doesn't get to start? Strange...
