Think he has to start during Pogbas lay off. You saw as soon as he came on we had a bit more control in the game. You could say its because we switched to a 3 in CMF but you saw Herrera always wanting the ball and trying to bring other people into the game, something Fellaini cant offer.

Hesitant to say he changed the game but you could see a noticeable difference in the team once he came on. Everyone felt calmer on the ball and we held onto it better.

He made the difference today. His closing down and busy-ness unsettled them and put them on the back foot again - they had grown far too comfortable passing it around in midfield.

Has to start with Pogba out.

We scored 3 goals after he came on. Does this mean now that he is the best plan B in the league?

No need to worry, Mou's already said it:

Glad to see Ander have a positive impact. On merit, Fellaini has been ahead of him this season. However, today's a little reminder that at top form Herrera's a real asset to this team.

Good impact when coming on. Pretty killed Everton off even before the other goals.

I am just a bit skeptical when it comes to talk about him should be starting now just because Pogba out injured. I meant Everton opened up the game and desperate which Herrera offered the control which went in our favor. In other game where we already have enough to control, we would want someone to make impact when being surrounded by opponents. This Fellaini, even Matic with their physical play is better suited. Herrera doesn't have the passing range to stay too deep

So Jose hasn't fallen out with him. Sun lied, go figure.

Don't let the person from the last page hear that and believe his sun rumours. I can't be bothered quoting him as he'd probably cry.

Agree, completely. I even thought it was better advised to start him today, but Mourinho thought otherwise, wrongly.

Did well.

Won't be surprised if he starts against South, maybe in a 3 men midfield as well.

Not sure why he's been absent but good to see him involved today. Hopefully he will start the next few whilst Pogba is injured.

Has to start in Pogba's absence, I get why Fellaini started given his UCL performance but he was bang average today

That being said I can see both starting next week away to Southampton

Mourinho thought wrongly ?

We should have been out of sight first 30 mins but for bad finishing and poor final ball nothing that Herrera would have improved but fine you clearly would make a better manager than Jose

I'm not a Fellaini guy and was hoping Herrera would start, but I thought a lot of our most dangerous counters today came from Fellaini getting his giant legs about and mucking things up, so I'd say he was above average, though obviously having one less midfielder who can really link up and play short hurts us, and he wasn't really effective in the air/chest today.

Helped us get control and kill the game today.

Easy to forget how good he was last season. Herrera is a great option to have and I hope he can get some starts under his belt to remind everyone of his quality.

Great sub to have. Gave us much needed energy when coming on today. Also allowed us to get our foot on the ball and see out the game.

Should be plan A, if you ask me (you weren't though). His short passing is very good - rubbish at long range passing, mind you - and he keeps the game flowing better than both Fellaini and Pogba, who also takes too long on the ball. I think he could work well alongside Matic till Pogba returns.

Thought he did well when coming on. Im really interested to see how hes used in the big games. Can see us going 433 in those, but want to see him, pogba and matic for those. Herrera in a more advanced role pushing and pressing would see him used best rather than sitting deep..

Gotta get him signed on a long term deal soon. There is nothing to worry about regards to him, as loves the club.

Absolutely affected the game positively today. He gave us the added stability we needed during that moment to swing the pressure back onto Everton leading to the extra goals.

He didn't have the same enthusiasm when celebrating with the group. He looked as though he's an outsider. I hope he's able to cope with not playing as much as last season.

Did Herrera come in and changed the game? It didn't seem he did much watching live but after listening to mourinho and on reflection it did feel that we have better control of the game since, and hence we were able to score our goals thereafter.

Maybe the delay in signing a new contract is why he's been shunted to the back of the CM cue, I mean from the start of the season he was behind Fellaini in the Mikel role.

He is best used when teams actually try to use their midfield, against stoke they just resorted to long balls which bypassed our midfield. He was not needed in that game, but in this game he was very useful.

I'd keep Matic as a DM, play Pogba next to him but with a free role and give Herrera a specific job or to harass every player with the ball

Suggesting that he changed the game is a bit of an exaggeration. But it definitely was the right thing to bring him on yesterday. We were about to enter the last stage of the game with a fragile lead (mainly because all our attacking options had made a meal out of their chances) and we didn't seem to have the legs to continue pressing for the ball. This gave Everton a better opportunity to try something better with the ball at their feet.

Unlike the Stoke game our problems yesterday came from the central channels. With Rooney dropping deeper to find spaces between the lines, Everton's tactics looked more like a 3-7-0. Once we couldn't keep up with the pressing, an extra body in the midfield was needed because we were outnumbered in those areas and Everton were enjoying more time on the ball. Herrera's substitution added even more physicality to our midfield, made the spaces our midfielders had to defend smaller and reinvigorated our energy levels.

At the same time Koeman made an attacking substitution (Calvert-Lewin for Gueye) which opened up the spaces for us to hit on the counter. With our midfield settled it was really game over.

Why wrongly? I don't get this the manager won us the game 4-0 I don't think anyone can complain about his team selection. If we started with Herrera who's to say we would have got a 4-0 result?

They just like complaining. Read any of their posts in match day threads, or really anywhere else.

Theres no way of knowing if we would have got a 4-0 with him starting. It might have been 9-0 instead.

But in very few games has Ander had a 80% or less successful pass completion, so its sensible to assume that he would have helped us keep the ball better than Fellaini did in this match. On the other side of things Fellaini won the ball a lot and a bunch of headers, Ander may not have contributed as much in these areas on the day.

I think Herrera is the Matic replacement, whereas Fellaini is the Pogba replacement. Mourinho clearly sees him as more of a defensive tool. It's fine by me, but I really hope he's the one who gets picked for the big games in a three rather than Fellaini.

Good read. Herrera just says the right things all the time

It's not even about saying the right things - there a quite a few players who would say things people want to hear. However, with Herrera, you know that he is completely genuine in everything he says. I, and most others, fully believe that he wants to be a United legend and that's why we love him so much. The epitome of the ideal professional.

I think he's right to view Herrera that way. He's not creative enough to be an AM.

He's the sort of midfielder that you can't afford to have in a three as the front three just don't get the same service.

He might not be the ideal player for a midfield two but he's a great backup and will add a lot this season.

Deserves more minutes, Player of the year last season.

Deserves more minutes ahead of whom? Matic has replaced him and improved the entire team. Looks like He'll be getting regular involvement. But the team as a unit is better without him. The team and results are most important.

Fellaini probably
