Aleksandr Golovin

I just realised I’ve been given a ‘Scouting Report’ threadmark :D

I appreciate Juventus taking notice and acting on my identifying skills.

I didn't put video and text wall in the OP for that reason...

Yeah, for some stupid reason I was thinking Anzhi Makhachkala played in the Ukrainian League, and even then they were more likely to spend big than receive big transfer fees

Yeah, Anzhi biggest reported fee was 18 million euro from Monaco for Traore. The rest were all undisclosed AFAIK.

Whatever club snaps him up before the WC have done great business, could see him being one of the more hyped talents once the tournament is done.

I think it's more likely hype will have moved onto other young players in more stable national teams after the tournament. Russia NT is a mess with a PE teacher level manager, mostly awful defence, inexperienced midfield and questionable forward that used to be a national laughing stock he was so bad(until turning things around to an extent with a couple of decent seasons).

It's no environment for a young CM to excel. In the '90s and '00s we were rarely short of having a deep midfield with players equally or even more talented than this lad ( Mostovoi, Shalimov, Karpin, Tsymbalar, Titov, Loskov, Kanchelskis, Alenichev, Izmailov and a few others) and none of them were ever really able to consistently get a grip on the NT and overcome the consistent long term problems of crap managers, keepers and forwards. Only Arshavin managed it at Euro 08, but that was finally with a great man manager in Hiddink who was also strong tactically. This team is much more like the non-dutch managed teams with all the same old flaws, only worse in every respect except the keeper.

Mostovoi might be the most underappreciated midfielder of all time. Playing for a different country, he could have reached enormous levels of fame. Loved him as a teenager.

Now jumping to the conversation as someone who watched the post Soviet influx of players to Portugal, Benfica in the beginning of the 90's signed 3 players from the Soviet Union.

Kulkov, Yuran and Mostovoi, the first 2 were sucessfull at Benfica and later for Porto, Mostovoi had the bad luck to play on the same position as a certain Manuel Rui Costa, so he left for Spain.

Fair to say if you go to Vigo even today he is called the "Czar from Vigo", I remember a portuguese player who played with him and Karpin and he told before the games started they both smoked their cigars.

Those three that went to Portugal became notorious back home for their lack of dedication according to the russian\ukrainian press that followed their exploits there. Kulkov and Yuran were finished as players by 96\97 while still in their 20s because of their lifestyles. Mostovoi at least sorted himself out by the time he got to Spain, but he was too old by then to get much interest from the big clubs even though Van Gaal mentioned a few times after Barca games against Celta he thought he was the best CM in the league.

Some of the English posters might remember Kulkov and Yuran bizarrely signing for Millwall(who i think were near the bottom of the championship) despite being in the starting lineup(on loan from Porto) of the Spartak team that had just won all their group CL games so had decent market value. The manager Oleg Romantsev had expected they would sign permanently, but they jumped ship to Millwall in January for what turned out to be little more than an excuse to party in London for 6 months. I don't think they played more than a few games there between them and were both totally out of shape when they did. Embarassing really.

I never rated Yuran too highly, the guy was a proper scumbag too with his repeated dangerous drink driving convictions, but Kulkov was a very classy CB\DM that could have had a better career.

You are entirely right and well informed. They were coached by Sven Goran first and after by Toni, if you knew how many times he had to put them without playing regarding their nightclub adventures.

But its fair to say Yuran and Kulkov had some good performances with them, particularly at European big games. Mostovoi problem was he wanted to play more, he didn't reacted well to be benched, Rui Costa was ahead of him. Now I remember Benfica loaned him to Strasbourg before he joined Celta Vigo.

Another player from the former Soviet Union who was a hot prospect at Sporting who unfortunately got a sad ending of carrer associated with drink driving was Serguei Cherbakov, he was signed by Bobby Robson in 1992 from Shaktar, he was starting to explode on a atractive team we had at the time under Bobby on 93 with Paulo Sousa, Figo, Balakov, Valckx, Juskowiak and so on.

Unfortunately our stupid President Sousa Cintra at the time fired Bobby because we were eliminated by Casino Salzburg on the old UEFA Cup, at the time we were leading the league, so he fired him and at the end of the season we lost.

On the week they fired Robson the entire squad went to a goodbye dinner with him and Mourinho, fair to say Cherba after the dinner probably went to some drinking session, the accident fractured Scherbakov's skull and his spinal column in three places.

You probably know this sad history https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serhiy_Scherbakov

Fair to say it was a different context when those players left the Soviet Union to play on Western Europe, still think even today, be it Russian or Ukrainians, they still struggle, just look at Konoplyanka or Yarmolenko.

Definitely looks like their best player - albeit against the Saudis. I think Juve will regret haggling over the price.

He's been alright. Quite lively. Couple of decent passes with good vision and a couple of very bad passes as well.

he seems nothing special tbf, it would be just a marketing buy for juve imho

Can't take him seriously after seeing how abject CSKA were against Arsenal in the Europa. Might blossom into a top player with time and experience but not one for us currently.

The amount of "best" players Russia have had in these kind of tournaments that have barely amounted to anything means I don't take anything seriously with them.

But they are looking good and nippy - could be a good fun run like in 2008(i think).

I would take him on the cheap. Has potential, definitely best player on the pitch skill wise

Looked decent so far. Heavily involved with both goals.

That Smolov is dog, couple of times he can't get his head up to pass to Golovin making the run in behind.

Fair enough, I think he's been lively!

surely good potential and the sharpest tool on the pitch just now, still one notch or two below what it takes to make the cut at a top 8 european club imho?

Yeah, I mean I wouldn't say he'll be walking in your team by any means, but I thought 25m euros is fair for his potential.

How much have you seen of him in Russia?

45 minutes on world stage for his first touch, natural ability with the ball, composure, working rate, physical grit and attitude to function with teammates are enough imho to be compared with 45 minutes from what we have just now in his position? costa, dybala, cuadrado, bernardeschi, mandzukic, pjaca? He would be good enough for a mid-table Serie A club, though, and possibly build from that.

Based on 45 minutes.... Right.

Looks pretty good, with a really good cross, but wouldnt say anything more then a squad player at a big club. Decent though. By far the best player on the pitch here

Impressed me too.

Looks a tidy little player. For cheapish I’d have him here.

Bagged himself a goal to boot.

Great Opening Game. It will be interesting to watch him play against a little tougher opposition. I like his work-rate the most and his ability to press when they lost the ball.
