Aleksandr Golovin

Good performance from Golovin. I can't ever see him being anything better than a lighter, slighter Antonio Valencia c.2010-2012. However, given that right wingers than can cross seem to have mostly been replaced by inside forwards who wanna cut in and shoot, I can see why Jose would cast an eye at him. We have Lukuku at #9 and nobody who can stick the ball in the air for him to attack. You can see the appeal.

1 goal and 2 assists with a MOTM performance in the opening match isnt bad, even if against shitty opposition. Some clubs will have taken notice

Have you been watching the same player as the rest of us?

Yeah. He played at 10. However, he showed lightning pace to latch onto the loose ball in the build up to Russia's second and he put in two good crosses for two of Russia's goals. You could very easily see him being instructed to run down the line and whip the ball in. Although his corners were a bit dodgy.

Why do people keep thinking he plays on the wing?

Based on this game, you'd think Cherykov was a great player, and we know he just isn't, couldn't even get consistent game time last season. Saudi Arabia were woeful.

Don't get too carried away with Golovin, he's more work horse than a technical creative player.

Can only beat whats put in front of ya, but lads in Saudi Arabia.

So you can see why the Valencia comparison is way off. They are nothing alike.

Direct, runs quick, put balls in: Describes Valencia 2010-12 quite accurately to me.

Looks a tidy wee player, think il wait till after the group stages to say if he is good enough KSA were fecking terrible.

Because of a good game against Saudi Arabia? Doubt it.
His popularity has probably just gone up about 5 fold after that performance, one more solid game and what I said won't be an exaggeration.

Closest comparison for me by a distance is like a Eriksen-lite. Same areas of the pitch, technical player with good delivery, just not anywhere close to Eriksen's level of course.

Well that just isn’t true. And I didn’t even watch today’s game. But I’ve seen Golovin before and he certainly isn’t a work horse as opposed to technical. He played United twice last year for a start and showed plenty of ability.

So everyone who runs and crosses is Valencia?

Plays centrally, has a great passing range, likes to play in the hole behind the striker, takes set peices, two footed, likes to keep the ball close, throws plenty of dummys and step overs. Nothing like Valencia to me.

I probably would have played well against this Saudi defence and I havent played football in years

Golovin’s passing range looked mid level to me. He was afforded a lot of space by a poor Saudi defence and there were no Isco style touches or plays. His set pieces were okay, the corners were poor but the free kick was good. I can’t see him flourishing as a #10 in a top league but played where he can run in behind he might offer something.

It's still significantly better than Valencia's. They aren't similar in the slightest. As someone above had said: Eriksen is a far better comparison in terms of style than AV.

I'm not putting much stock in that, Saudi Arabia were 10 x worse than I was expecting and I expected them to be awful.

However, you can only beat what's in front of you and that was a 10/10 performance. I'll definitely pay attention to his next couple of games.

Comparison with Valencia is just... odd. I'd say that he can potentially grow into a more technical version of Herrera, Eriksen is also quite similar (and both weren't in the top tier talent category — Eriksen was a tier or two below the likes of Gotze and Neymar).

Nice to see him perform on the international stage

Agreed. And that would fit as a Pogba backup for us. Right now we have Pogba, Fred, Herrera and Matic which skews a bit defensive so the 5th CM, if we do sign one, should really be a creative type in case Pogba is out. That could be Pereira or Lingard (less creative but a good runner) or maybe a signing that doesn't break the bank like Golovin. Would also be curious to see more of Fornals of Villareal, who tied Messi and Suarez for most assists in La Liga in his age 21 season.

Said he'd be the breakthrough player of the tournament months ago. So far so good!
