Mitoma we need to watch him closely, he's that good and much of a threat for us to even put a man on him.
Doesn't stand a chance 1v1 against Aaron Wan-Bi... Erm Noussair Mazraoui

In all seriousness, I know he scored against Everton, but I do think Mitoma's end product is somewhat overrated. Welbeck loves a goal against us and is in form - he'll probably be the most pressing danger.

I can see Mount starting as Zirkzee gains match fitness and adapts to our tactics, including the high-press. On a spectrum for off-the-ball work, he needs to be much closer to Mount than what he showed before the goal.

We've been losing to Brighton for years and Maguire is a contributing factor to that. I often get triggered by his overly cautious, bagpack carrying 1v1 defending higher up the pitch. I don't think they'll be playing as many high balls as Fulham did to beat the press either, so if De Ligt is fit, he should start.

You'd think having us play the first game of the season Friday night (therefore having the shortest time to prepare) would mean we got a bit of rest for the next game but nope, 12:30 Saturday.

I know it was only Everton but Brighton looked ruthless at Goodison... sort of ruthlessness that I'd love to see from us. Won't be an easy game and beating them last game of the season in May means nothing as far as I'm concerned. We need to take any half chances that come our way

To be fair we've got the scousers the weekend after so at least we get an extra day for that, they play half 4 this Sunday

They definitely weren't brilliant, Everton were just really poor.

Ya not sure were people are getting that they were in some dominating top form. They weren't. Everton was missing their best defender and had 39 year old Ashley Young playing RB .

Brighton scored 3 on 5 shots on goal (10 shots all match, Everton had 9 shots)

The goal Mitoma had their positioning was Sunday league, Mitoma was allowed to just walk in near the far post without anyone within 3 yards of him. Just look at it

Their 2nd goal was more poor marking from their defense and Pickford's terrible positioning

Pickford has that if he wasn't implanted on the edge of the 6 yard box

and their 3rd goal came against 10 men 20 minutes after Young got sent off.

Obviously not saying we will just go in there and steamroll and we'll have to show up and play well to win but it was more Everton being poor than Brighton being great

Just realised that Mats Weiffer went to Brighton while watching MOTD. Thought he'd gone somewhere else for some reason. Be interesting to see how he plays against us. He was one of the lads I was mentioning would be a good signing for us. Went for 30mil too.

    Such a good post!

Mounts pressing is really top notch. I think he is close to turning the corner for United.
Ya people can hate on him because he didn't have 40 passes or 3 big chances created or something but he was doing a job that doesn't usually show up in the stat lines unless you are going real in depth

His pressing was awesome. However, he was muscled off the ball several times, he wasn‘t good on the ball. Hopefully that will improve.

How can we accommodate Mount? We definitely need his energy at AMEX!
They had some pretty sloppy play building from the back in the first half against Everton. Not to count chickens but if we press as well as we did against Fulham, we're bound to catch them out plenty.

Yep, last 5 PL games against them we’ve lost 4 of them… always a tricky tie for us.

They looked very dangerous at the weekend - high pressing, attacking with real intensity and their wingers are very quick and direct. They will probably lose by a few big scorelines this season, but I expect they will absolutely hammer a few teams, too. As you say, tricky opponent.

It means fans act scared of the teams like Brighton and Fulham and it is annoying. The only teams we should ever be concerned about are City, Arsenal, and Liverpool. Everybody else we need to be crushing home and away
I'll get a message to Erik and let him know.

    Onana
    Mazraoui Maguire Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Amad Bruno Rashford
    Zirkzee

Only change would be Zirkzee in place of Mount. Maguire doesn't deserve to be dropped after his performance last week neither does the rest of the defence apart from Martinez. If Martinez continues to make silly mistakes his position may well come under threat.

Amad deserves another opportunity to start alongside Rashford. I wouldn't say they were good but neither were terrible and Garnacho didn't show enough to start above them. Also, Garnacho seems more impactful from the bench.

Our problem since the pre-season has been finishing the chances we create. Created so many chances against Liverpool, City and Fulham but are struggling to convert them. Hopefully Zirkzee starts and scores a couple and then we can take him off for Mount who can press them to death during the latter stages of the game.

Subs : Mount for Zirkzee, Garnacho for Amad, McT for Mainoo, De Ligt for Maguire/Martinez, Collyer for Casemiro if we have a 3 goal lead(pipedream, I know)

Tough away match, particularly when we have Liverpool the following week. Wont’ want to drop points in both those matches back to back.

Hoping we can get the business done and get all 3 points, will show some improvement in mentality.

I think you start with Mount again. First home game of their season. Their crowd will be loud and they like to play a possession game. Let him run himself tired for 50-55 minutes, be a menace in the first half and try to disrupt them as much as possible. Then take him off for Zirkzee. Mostly likely we will need a goal in the 2nd half. No point bringing Mount on then if he doesn’t start.

Any sort of 3 points at this stage. Have no real concern with performance at this stage of the season, just try and accumulate as many points as possible and limit as many injuries as possible.
I cannot argue with this feeling. 3 point is all that matters. Give me the win with an intact squad at the end of the day.

I would take a draw, just to keep the confidence before the following (small) game.

We know that Ten Hag won't play like this, but I would play a low block, don't let them any spaces (like they had against Everton) and counter them.

They looked fitter than us, or maybe we needed 20 minutes against City and 30min against Fulham to be in the game so it may be good to be safe.

Team will not change a lot in my opinion, but I would play Garnacho to hit them in counter as I am still not impressed with Amad

No need to be so defensive against them. They were vulnerable to pressing against Everton.

    Same tactics as against Fulham.

Result will be determined by the quality of our performance.

Think this is a tough line up to judge.

    De Ligt or Maguire
    Garnacho or Amad
    Zirkzee or Mount

    Don't see Erik dropping Rashford.

    Think I'd go for....

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Garnacho Bruno Mount Rashford

Zirkzee looked knackered quickly on Friday so another 30 mins in his legs against Brighton, before possibly starting against Liverpool.

Maguire looked like he had a knock when he came off so rest him with Yoro out he'll be needed fit.

Garnacho for Amad simply because there will be more space against Brighton and Garnacho loves running behind.

I am guessing that we'll keep the team pretty much the same for the next two games, given the opposition.

It is a valid point, though. We pressed well on Friday for an hour or so, but our press noticeably declined in the final 30 minutes of the game, which coincided with Mount's removal. Not sure whether that was because of tired legs or because the efficacy of our press is dependent on having Mount in the side. If the former then fair enough - that's what you would expect for the first few games of the new season while everyone is gaining fitness - if the latter, we have a bit of a problem as Mount isn't in the best XI, so we need to find a way to press without him.
