De Ligt shouldn't be starting ahead of Maguire.

Maguire was great in his first game and till he makes a mistake, he should continue. You should be punished or rewarded for your performances. Maguire should be rewarded and be allowed to continue.

It's a long season, De Ligt will get his chances. Maguire and Martinez should continue.

No. The manager should play the best team. If ETH thinks de Ligt is clearly better than Maguire than he should play de Ligt.

I dont want us to drop points because we concede a goal that we might not have conceded with a better player playing instead of Maguire. If the change from Maguire to a better player comes after Maguire made a mistake and points have already been dropped, the change has been made too late.

This will be a very tough game. Their first home game and on the back of a 3-0 win.

I dont know why but ive got a feeling we'll win this, it helps that Pascal Grob has left Brighton as well as he always turns prime Messi against us

We beat Brighton away last season playing an early prototype to this more measured press, so hopefully that bodes well.

They're a good team, and will undoubtedly raise their game, and are a bit of a bogey team for us, but I feel the scoreline against Everton flattered them so we should be fairly confident.

Maguire was better than De Ligt yesterday though to be fair. Form surely has to come into the equation, not just pure talent.

I doubt ten Hag will bring in De Ligt, especially whilst Maguire is playing the way he is.

He did something similar in his first season with McTominay, who was performing well in the deeper role, which kept Casemiro on the bench for a couple of games.

Thought Brighton looked great vs Everton. A lot of people are sleeping on them this season. They had an injury crisis as bad as us last year and had Europe to contend with, which they now don't. We need to be on it for this one or I could see us getting beat.

Would go with the same team except for Zirkzee in for Mount.

Should be in the weird feelings of football thread but feels like 80% of all his PL goals/ assists were against us.

Went and checked because I had the same weird feeling. He's scored 30 PL goals, 7 against us. So it's still like 25% of all his goals for Brighton which is pretty damn high.

I wouldn't count that match. Di Zerbi was leaving and the players were clearly in holiday mood.

He definitely seemed to raise his game against us, either that or we always played to his strengths. He won't be missed!

Watched the Brighton game, some stray observations:

-Minteh looked great carrying the ball 1 v 1. Came off for concussion protocol but he seemed mad about it so maybe will still play against us

-Hinshelwood played LB, really struggled against Jack Harrison, who was the only lively Everton player other than Iroegbunam, who maybe benefitted from playing against an aging Milner

    -Their CBs weren't troubled much

-Looked like a typical 4-2-3-1 with Joao Pedro as a 10

It was more than a couple of games, we basically had to wait until we lost a game for him to use the 70 million pound player he bought to improve the team. Conceding 6 to City was the reason Casemiro finally got given a start.

The whole mentality is just weird. Spend huge money on a player to upgrade your team but sit him on the bench for months, to play a player who you don't really rate, but said player didn't make any major mistakes in his last game so it's mean to drop him...

As a club we are just far too sentimental. Harry Maguire had the opportunity to leave the club last summer when it was clearly known he wasn't going to be first choice, but he chose to stay and be a back up player. He has no right to complain about being benched knowing full well the manager preferred other players to him, if he wanted a starting role he should have left when he had offers on the table.

    Hope to see

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Amad Bruno Garnacho
    Zirkzee

    Logic being
    1. We bought De Ligt in to upgrade the team. He's never going to get up to speed if he doesn't play. Let's not have a scenario where we spend 90m on two centre backs and we end up playing Maguire ahead of them for most the season until he makes a howler.
    2. Amad and Garnacho have both been better than Rashford in pre-season and early season games.
    3. Mount has done nothing to keep his spot.
    4. Zirkzee earned a start with his winner last game, and is our only fit striker.

People who are against Casemiro-Mainoo-Bruno... I don't necessarily disagree there's something not quite right, but it's our best midfield, and that's part of the problem. Our midfield was absolutely dreadful last season and we've only managed to weaken our midfield options over the summer. We need 2 new midfielders before the window closes.

I doubled my bet because they weren't, which is why I remember that match quite distinctively.

We'll have to agree to disagree, United at home is a cup final for most teams, especially when we've been poor in recent seasons.

Yes indeed. This will be a very good test to see how we can compete against a well organised and skillful side.

Think it’ll be almost exactly the same line up unless Maguire is injured with the one change being Garnacho for Amad.

Both De Ligt and Zirkzee have had no preseason so they will be slowly introduced for more minutes. I expect both to potentially get 20 minutes or so.

My expectation is that it will be the exact same lineup that beat Fulham, but I wouldn't be all that surprised if Garnacho and Amad both start. They did in the same fixture last season and we got the win, and we'll probably be looking to play roughly the same kind of match.

I'm not sure Garnacho showed why he should be starting with his Fulham cameo. He was atrocious.

Mount has been pretty meh on the ball, but his legs and pressing is needed in these games. He does the unsexy stuff well.

Not sure Garnacho did enough to replace either Rashford or Amad. None of them were particularly great Friday.

Expecting same teams as v Fulham, except Garnacho replacing Amad. Brighton gave a good account of themselves yesterday and will be tough to beat but we can get a result there.

Cheers. I love that such opinions exist because it usually results in better odds and easy money.

Garnacho is better off the bench, his levels drop when he starts. And even if he starts, it should be in place of Rashford not Amad.

Otherwise I'm inclined to keep the same team, but maybe have De Ligt inplace of Maguire. Think we are about to be pressed to oblivion.

As a Brighton fan, have to disagree, it’s a big match but nothing like a cup final. More on a par with any big team with top six aspirations. Palace at home is a much bigger game for us!

What's your easy money bet for this match?
Nothing so far, I haven't watched the Brighton match. But start of the season usually offers a nice arbitrage between reputation and actual performances. Chelsea the past 2 seasons were really nice pickings.

I think the scoreline flattered them really. In the first half the game was quite even, arguably we had the better of it by a bit. Difference is that they have multiple match winners now and Minteh looks like he's going to be a bargain. Definitely one to keep an eye on as an outside bet for YPOTY.

A well coached, footballing team vs manchester united. There's only one result here and that's a brighton win. We don't have enough goals in this team and Brighton aren't a team where 1 goal will be enough to beat them.

Mount’s off the ball movement and press is necessary- the guy needs to play
Yes, I agree. But Mount and Bruno playing is messy, we can see that. Now Zirkzee should start. But he also drops deep. I think without Mount, it really exposes the two midfielders from Mainoo, SMT, Casimero. We saw this against Fulham, those same, gaping holes through the heart of our midfield.

However, I think we have a team that is probably more comfortable playing on the break, so this game may suit us. Plus, no one will think we're clear favourites to win, which I also think helps.

Watching it back this morning, Everton looked far the better side in the first half. Brighton scored out of nowhere and the game was still pretty even after that. Having seen the scoreline going in I was expecting a mauling.

I don't know why but I am strangely relaxed. We are going to win this.
