You could say the same about Onana, glued to his line again, chasing shadows.
Having watched the game, it's impossible (for me) to pick a United MOTM, and I cannot be bothered to complete the individual ratings.
Same here, I liked down the list and just gave up.

I think some of what happened today was inevitable.

When you have new players in who haven't had a preseason together there will be uncertainty.

It's all well having 4/5 new signings but they need time.

Some good...some usual bad. It's clear now that Rashford, Mount and Casemiro can't start anymore, right? I'd rather see De Ligt in with Maguire and Martinez pushed into defensive mid, where he does have experience. Garnacho has earned starters minutes, along with Amad...so that means Rash to the bench. Mount is the most pointless and positionless player in the EPL. Running for the sake of running adds nothing. Zirkzee should be in from the start now.

This is the worst game I've seen Bruno play in some time. He was absolute trash today. His passing, touches, and decision making were bad. I'm actually happy EtH finally had the balls to sub him off. Can't remember the last time that happened in a game that wasn't an early round FA Cup or Carabou Cup game against a minnow.
Mount was the best player in that half.

Thought today was an extention of the season before.

Early season excuses and the same issues existing as if it's not something the manager can effect.

I'll be amazed if he makes it to Xmas.

To put it into context Brighton have several new signings Danny Welbeck up front and james Milner in midfield. Their manager is 31 and has never worked in the Premier league before.

Our manager has signed several high profile players had a full pre season and been in the PL two more years than the opposite.

Same shit over and over again people seem to excuse him and give him all the bloody excuses under the sun.

I hope he can turn it around for our sakes but can't see it.

We’ve definitely got some of the dumbest posters
Well, if I am dumb then the truth must be that we are actually a very smart footballing team. We must be making all sorts of right decisions on the pitch and from the dogout during games.
    Yeah sure, genius.

Having watched the two minutes on MOD, I put the blame squarely on ETH and Rashford for Utd not getting a point and maybe all three.
ETH for the substitutions and Rashford for been on the pitch.
Why can’t Rashford understand the offside law? Why when he’s looking along the line does he feel the need to go forward and beyond the last defender? If he just stays on side his goal would have stood but for a few seasons now time and time again he just gets himself into offside positions and that coupled with the rest of his play shows how incompetent he is as a footballer.

He also scored which is more than Rashy.
That glossed over a poor performance. If Rashford had scored he still didn’t perform to the level required from a team supposed to be challenging for a top 4 spot. They both need to improve but at least Amad has youth on his side.

Absolutely spot on, but people view United through a special lens where these things only happen to us and we aren’t like any other club for some reason.

Feck off - he should have let it trickle into the goal and would have been scored by Garnacho
If you look at it in real time Zirkzee has no chance of avoiding the shot because he's already sliding. It's just bad luck.

Look at it again, Zirkee actually moves his knee towards the ball, which is immaterial as he is off side as soon as the ball is played

You're right, his knee does move up but I think, again, he's just trying to halt his slide and stand up, but there's no way for him to avoid the angle of the shot once he's begun sliding.

I don't think there's any blame here to apportion. We were just massively unfortunate and ultimately, as you say, offside was the correct call. We've got to move on and take the positives.

If he doesn’t touch it, it wouldn’t be given as offside as he’s not interfering. Not his fault though - he just couldn’t work out a way to avoid it. His face after the goal made it clear he knew instantly it would be ruled out.

He would still be off side at the moment the ball is played, whether he touches the ball or not after is immaterial

That’s not the rule. He’s only offside because he touches it and therefore interferes. If it misses him then it would have been a goal.

This feels like trying to explain offside to my cat
    Yes it is,
    perhaps you should learn it!

    https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/lawsandrules/laws/football-11-11/law-11---offside
A player is in an offside position if:
    • any part of the head, body or feet is in the opponents’ half (excluding the halfway line) and
    • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent
The hands and arms of all players, including the goalkeepers, are not considered. For the purposes of determining offside, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit.

A player is not in an offside position if level with the:

    • second-last opponent or
    • last two opponents
No mention of touching the ball!

You’ve missed a large part of the law out there Matt. Have another go, and maybe ruminate a little on the concept of interfering with play.

    Have a great weekend!

    I can agree with that.

    I can agree with that.
I don’t know if I’m being kind to Amad though as he’s 22, you’d think he’d have the composure on the final balls by now but looks like he tries to force everything. I’m hoping it’s just him bedding in to the first team as he’s one of the few players that excites in the team now.

Perhaps, but he was also fresh off of a family tragedy based on reports so questionable as to whether he was at his best and whether he should have played.

Either way, I have much more confidence with Amad on the team sheet rather than Rashford these days. Really hoping De Ligt and Garnacho come in for Liverpool.

Seems unsurprisingly that the matchday thread is filled by emotional reactive posts.

On later reflection and to ing down the self-fullfilling emotive memory, it seems to me we played a very even game away to Brighton, who have started well this season. Chances were evenly spread, ExG equally so (slight advantage Brighton), luck in crucial moments as well (slight disadvantage United). United’s game plan worked very well first half, Brighton’s a bit better after, still Brighton scored on their one situation before the break and Utd had two in the net in second half before Brighton’s late brain haemorraghed goal.

A deserved draw away to Brighton and deserved win home to Fulham would be a acceptably successful start to the season for me.

Playing wise, we have played solid for 60 mins both games, been more vulnerable last 30 mins. I identify this with two factors: Loss of defensive midfield due to Case/Mainoo exhaustion and lack of apt defensive cover, and loss of protection of midfield due to pressing patterns weakening when going from Mount to Zirkzee.

First issue is being dealt with (Ugarte). Second issue is a question of Zirkzee getting integrated in team pressing and Højlund getting injury free.

So far, we are not much off reasonable expectations at this point.

Do you think Ugarte will be risked?
