The problem is that you feel de Ligt is an example of that bad wage management. I don't think that's true. Players that are not a hot commodity are the problem with United.

How many matches did Darmian take part of? Can we not fill his minimal role with O'Connor or Laird? How about Valencia? Why did Lingard get the wages he's on? Was he a threat to leave? No. Anybody that would want him could not offer him the wages he got at United and they were all a step down. Why did Jones get another contract when Tuanzebe could have filled his squad role, provided we do sign a CB?

That is where the waste occurs. De Ligt is not an example of this. He is a necessary asset for where United are currently. We need him to transform the outlook of the club so that we can keep a player like Pogba and attract other high end talent because our reputation is currently a sinking ship. We need people to buy into our rebuild project.

100% agree with this. The wage structure should be based on player value, quality and contribution to the squad. If De Ligt were to come in, he’d be automatic first choice and arguably the best CB in the club, so why shouldn’t he be paid appropriately for that?

Similarly, the Darmians, Joneses, etc of the squad should be replaced by academy products.

I agree with that 2nd paragraph.

But I just don't think de Ligt would make sense as a 19 year old on 350K wages, at all (I keep stressing, if that is indeed what he's been offered). It would signal that you can join United and get double what you can expect to get elsewhere, so long as you do us the kind favour of playing for us. And then what, in 3 years time when Barca come sniffing and half our squad is now on 200-250K wages, do we then try to tie him down with a new deal of 500K? It's just not sensible in my view.

Raiola is probably moving him like a puppet and every thing and every quote he does is planned by Mino.

valentijn driessen is the head football of telegraaf but is well-known in Holland for just talking shite. I've said it before but it's bizarre how the head of the most Ajax-informed newspaper can be so incredibly uninformed, or act it at least.

Mike Verweij is their tier 1 journalist on Ajax matters and Driessen just regurgitates Spanish tabloids for the most part. he also has some strange vendetta against Ten Hag that is a running joke in Holland

Haha poor Valentijn.

Highlights of the season include :

- not traveling to Madrid because Ajax would lose anyway
- claiming that Moura never scores so it wasnt a problem if Ajax let him get to the goalkeeper.

If Valentijn Driessen says de Ligt wont sign for Manchester United you can start ordering your de Ligt 5 United shirt.

Oh well. We dared to dream.
Is there no quality control for thread commenters?

This guy went moaning about my thread setup to discuss progress or not in the summer transfer and then jumps to conclusion De Ligt hasn't signed like that is somehow different to the thread I made.

Maybe it takes a transfer muppet to know one!

But if I got a warning....maybe we need equality...!

Useless news from catradio. We are all know that Ajax isn’t making this as bid war. Any reasonable offer around £60m-£70m would be accepted by Ajax. It’s always been up to the player or cough cough (agent).

You're right in that he'll likely want a wage increase at some point but realistically he's the best defender on the market. I don't mind paying big money to a genuine marquee player like de ligt or pogba. It's the inability to negotiate sensible deals with players who aren't at that level that's the problem.

Problem is De Ligt could be easily over hyped. He is 19! What has he really done to prove he can cut it at the highest level week in week out. Maybe he doesn't need to as still time to develop, but it's crazy to assume he is a sure thing which £350k a week suggests.

Again, I definitely share the view that our wage structure turmoil is mainly down to rewarding huge contracts to mediocre players. However, a 19 year old player who has only ever played in the Netherlands is not the same as Messi, Suarez, Ronaldo, etc. proven world class players. If he were to sign a 350K deal it would be insane, in my humble opinion.

We'll if the mods gave you a warning then it seems likely they agreed with him. If you open a thread saying 'we didn't get de ligt' when he hasn't even moved yet then thats a factually incorrect premise and the mods would remove the thread and give you a warning. You'll know next time not to do it. I got a warning myself once for making an inappropriate remark about Chris Sutton's intelligence. If the forum didn't have mods enforcing rules then the quality would plummit and nobody would want to use it any more. If making a post that's just inane but not offensive got you a warning then we'd all be banned by now. Bad threads clutter up the site though, that's more of a problem. If the guy you think reported you pissed you off with comments you didn't like then you have the option to block him of course, that's your own choice.

Ajax have accepted our bid. Our terms are great. We're not dealing directly with Raiola, going the proper route given his ban. The only other team involved is Barca, who can't match us. Moreover, de Ligt actually wants to join us. He may become our first signing of the summer.

Noice.

Lots of good points. I'm just pissed because all I wanted was a thread for ongoing discussion as a temperature gauge for how people feel about the transfer window as it progresses, something we don't currently have as an overview and yet this got shot down. Ok maybe I added some banter into that, but this isn't a journal! Let's at least allow some humour among a topic that has legs over the course of a summer.

Anyway, let's not go off topic. Just wanted to make a point, as some in here trying to act like wanna be mods and no better than a 'grass!

I disagree with that. I think we've seen enough of him to know that he's at least a top quality player. The range of error for me is basically the difference between peak vertonghen at the low end and Hummel's at the upper. But either of those players would massively improve us anyway. If he's going to be easily our best defender then he should be on big wages. Real Madrid and Barcelona don't seem to suffer from this problem. If their players demand elite wages they don't deserve they don't cave in and give it to them. They just let them leave.

A lot of players show massive promise and then it doesn't work out, maybe a loss of focus, a change of scenery, extra work load in training/ games. Point is it doesn't always work out. £200k I wouldn't baulk at. That is top level talent offering. £350k is the best in the world levels.

If he goes to Barcelona we'll not get another chance to sign him so it is what it is. You could make the same arguments for neymar when he was playing in the Brazilian league.

SpoonFex said Barca are the only other team in for him that we know of. Doesn't mean there aren't other teams interested.

True. But I'm holding firm that the kid wants United. The storm from Barca has been pathetic. Very much stinks of the kind of face saving talk those clubs need to keep their state sponsored presidents in office. If there's one image that sums them up for me it's Busquets rolling on the floor , peeking out. And I love the city itself hah

But you won't get him for 200k because we're competing against Barcelona. If the offer isn't majorly convincing we'll definitely miss out and then we'll be looking at another Bailly or rojo style punt. We already got turned down for koulibaly for 95m and skriniar doesn't seem to want to move. Varane won't move. There aren't any that many top drawer defenders on the market.

Chelsea are going to loose Hazard and can't reinforce because of transfer ban. Spurs are likely loose Eriksen. Man UTD might loose Pogba and De Gea, but we would have the funds to replace them and as well reinforce other positions. Arsenal will reinforce on the cheap. Next season we should have more balanced squad and at the minimum get the 4th spot. If we don't, it would be a worse failure than this season.
But all those teams have experienced managers which for me is the biggest difference...

I think he won't go to Barcelona. All the news that he is not going there comes from Barca media. I think they know he didn't choose them and they are trying to save face with the Barca or money BS.

I do believe we have a chance to get him.

We've had two of the most experienced and successful managers of the last half a century coaching us in the last few years. When you have a chef executive who will ignore two champions league winning managers when it comes to what this squad needs to compete, the manager is the least of our worries when it comes to replacing those who have been sold.

I totally want Woody out but he's a Glazers puppet so can't see it ever happening....my post was more to do with how Ole will do against Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea for a top 4 finish as there managers have much more experience then Ole which might be a to bigger hurdle next season hoping for top 4?

They were two very good seasons actually. They did't win the UCL the year before because Salah got KO'd and the infamous Karius meltdown. And they finished one point below City, reaching the UCL final again. To claim they are not one of the best clubs in the world right now is insane.
Reaching a CL final is a very good achievement and they are a very good team now, but nowhere close to Barca or Madrid, who have actually won things. If getting to a semi or final is all it takes then thatst a different criterka. Also, Pool sacrificed their domestic cup competition two years running and that is never the sign of a brilliant team.

To be fair, Pool didn't "sacrifice" their League campaign this season. The "slipped" behind City just by 1 point. That fateful draw with a certain team at Old Trafford turned out to be the final nail in their Title hope. Food for thoughts!

I don't think Barcelona want him as much as we do. They don't particularly care for CBs which are not from their region. It's one of those where they'd be happy to have him but believe they can live without. They're always like this. Different priorities.
