Yann M’Vila

Was the player I'd picked as my number 1 target for us this summer, though that was based solely on his performance against England and bits and pieces I've seen of him. He'd be a good signing for Arsenal. Was hoping that we'd be in for him when the time came for him to leave France.

Arsène Wenger has made a bold statement of intent by offering £22m to Rennes for the holding midfielder Yann M'Vila.

The Arsenal manager has consistently promised to make signings during what has been a testing summer only to struggle to find value in the market. But he appears to have concluded that he must pay over the odds for the right player and M'Vila, who has established himself as a regular for France, fits the bill.

Wenger has already had a £15m bid rejected for the 21-year-old and his latest offer would shatter Arsenal's transfer record for an incoming player. M'Vila is under contract until 2015. Wenger needs to reinforce his midfield, following the sales of Cesc Fábregas and Samir Nasri, and he has also tracked Eden Hazard of Lille.

He wants to strengthen in central defence, too, and he is interested in Everton's Phil Jagielka, Bolton Wanderers' Gary Cahill and Birmingham City's Scott Dann.

Ooh interesting.
Fabregas was always leaving. If Nasri forcing a move will make Wenger act in the transfer window, it might be good for them in the long run.

If Arsenal are going for him we should too.

I mean, he'd be a great player for us AND he'd end up not going to them, and they need a midfielder even more than us.

Perfect.

This guy would be perfect for United IMO. Watched him play against Celtic for Rennes last night, commentators said that in France he has a reputation of being a Makelele and Vieria all rolled into one

You guys realise he got sent off right? I watched the whole game, didn't look special whatsoever. But it is just one game. I haven't seen anything elso of him, so won't hold that performance against him.

I only watched the first half and a bit of the 2nd.

But I have a keen interest in Ligue 1 and have watched him play a few times last few seasons - he's a very, very good player.

One sent-off and now??????

He's a fantastic player, i saw him play a lot of times for France and Rennes.

He would be a perfect player for us.

Personally, I think he would be a very good signing. I'd rather others, but he would definitely be an improvement on what we have.

Would love him at Arsenal. A shame, because no doubt big(ger) clubs will be in for him come the summer.

And what's even more of a shame because our best chance of signing him was during the last window - whilst we could still guarantee Champions League action as one of the hooks. Next window who knows what we'll be able to guarantee... I went to bed dreaming of M'Vila and Gotze/Hazard, and woke up to Arteta and Yossi-fecking-Bennayoun (I would like to say that both have won me over though, and are good players/signings, but they should have been made last season, not this one).

Do Arsenal need him with Song there, though?

I'd be more worried you went out and bought Martin from the little I've seen of him for France - looked a bit like Nasri with less fannying about, very penetrative passer and graceful on the ball.

Yeah we'll never sign him what with Song, Coquelin and Frimpong about. But Song needs someone to wax with - he won't be able to keep up his top form all season, and will be off to the ACN anyway (or he could, god forbid, cop an injury), and adding a World Class talent to the squad would surely do no harm.

As far as I'm concerned I'm happy to have talented youngsters coming through the ranks (specifically Frimpong and Coquelin in this case), but they aren't an immediate fix. Whereas if something happens to Song someone like Yann M'Vila could step up to the place with ease, and a midfield of Wilshere/Ramsey + Song + M'Vila would be absolutely fearsome... Maybe not creative enough though?

I agree that he is comparable to Makelele, but I do not agree that he has the qualities and strengths that Vieira possessed. My impression from what I have seen from him is that he has very good of ball movement, and a tidy passer of the ball, but not that much more.

In fact, a player like Jack Rodwell is probably closer to that description than M'Vila, considering what type of qualities the two possess. But we already know that he has a long way to go, and since the grass is always greener..

Yann M'Vila likely to join Arsenal or Real Madrid, says Rennes teammate | Metro.co.uk

French defensive midfielder Yann M'Vila will join Arsenal or Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

This is the view of M'Vila's Rennes teammate Kader Mangane, who says that his friend has 'extraordinary abilities' destined to take him to a top European club.
Arsenal or Real Madrid look set to seal the signing of Yann M'Vila next summer. Arsenal or Real Madrid look set to seal the signing of Yann M'Vila next summer.

Arsenal have been following the midfielder for some time, and manager Arsene Wenger launched a transfer bid of around £26 million in the summer in an attempt to fill the gap in his squad left by Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri's departures to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.

Rennes decided to keep hold of their man at that time, but Mangane insists that the player will move on at the end of the current campaign.

'He might go to England but he also likes the Spanish league. I don't think he will leave in January but I think he will join Real Madrid or Arsenal next summer,' the Senegalese international told Goal.com.

'The top clubs are right to scout him as I see him with a big career in front of him. Yann has the potential to be one of the biggest players in the world.'

While few players find it easy to resist the lure of Real, Gunners boss Wenger can be confident in his ability to offer the player first-team football.

Jose Mourinho's overstocked Madrid squad already features central midfielders Lassana Diarra, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira, Nuri Sahin, Mesut Ozil, and Esteban Granero.
