Yann M’Vila

That's because neither of them played well enough to get selected for big games.

Unlike Carrick, who was clearly above both of them in our midfield pecking order throughout last season. Which makes it all the more strange that you're singling him out as the player who let us down the most.

Absolute bull, because Fletcher played all the big games in which he was fit unless I am mistaken. He was a sub in the Liverpool game but he was clearly injured at that stage and didn't play for months after.

I don't have any player ahead of any of the other 2. I rate them all about equally with Gibson miles down that list.

There's too ways of looking at that though - either we need someone to combat the pressure, stick their foot in and get a hold of the midfield through imposing their presence or calm the midfield with an assured touch and spread the play around. That's the part I don't really get in all these midfield discussions, people going back and forth saying 'we need an AM, just look how poor in possession we were against Barca', 'no, we need a DM, just look how we could barely get the ball back off them, duhhhh'.

As if there's one solution, one way to combat a problem. We buy multifunctional players for this very reason, we mould Anderson to play as a combative centre mid so that when we need to stick the foot in, we will, and when he needs to carry the ball and move the attack forward with incisive passing, he will. Just as we've done with Carrick as not simply a holder or a passer, but both.

This is exactly the point I've been trying to get across on here all summer. Pigeonholing players FM style is foolish and does not in any way explain how United use their midfield, or what we need to find to improve it.

Personally if this lad costs 15 million, and Nasri goes to City for 20 -- i'll be pissed. I haven't watched Vila in more then a handful of games/clips but for me Nasri gives us the goals and creativity we have lacked while this lad seems to be the english version of Rodwell ( I may be wrong, but that's the first impression i get when i watch him play).

Good player he may be, but we need someone with guile, movement, creativity and ability to score from midfield. Is Vila that player?

Also...don't we have similar players to Vila in Tunneclife and Pogba (they are probably a year or two away but still, aren't they of a similar build and playing style)?

How many midfielders out there that scores a lot playing in the middle of the park? Unless they're playing in an attacking position(AM/wings), many of those CMs don't score a lot.

I've only seen him like twice. Can't comment to much. One game was when he was MoM for France vs England. Think that's when his "hype" started on the caf.

Eh every big game before he got injured/sick.

For the record, I regard any matches against the top 4 and Liverpool as big matches. He started every one... Both games at home against Liverpool, home against Arsenal, both home and away against City. He was injured/sick for Liverpool away, all matches against Chelsea and Arsenal away.

Now unless you don't regard those as important matches, then Fletcher seems to start regardless of what form he is in, rightly or wrongly.

O'Sheady you should get a 3 month ban for posting caught offside on here. How that joke of a site manages to stay in business is beyond me.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will look to continue his summer of spending with a move for Rennes' France international midfielder Yann M'Vila.

From the BBC gossip column, if its good enough for the beeb I reckon its good enough for the caf transfer forum.

Strange why the beeb always print caught offside but them and daily star just print absolute evil lies everyday usually

Interesting, you search M'Vila and the earliest thread that comes up seems to be all the way back in...well the England game at the start of the year. Maybe the praise for him is lost in one of those bigger threads though, like the Rodwell one when you decided he was a Rooney talent, and went on to say how you watched Everton youth games, and described Veloso as a viable target for the Hargreaves role...

I guess I'm just a bit cynical really, is all. I'm sure you watch all of these players extensively.

if we sign nasri this is not gonna happen, especially given pogba will be challenging next year

Pogba won't play much 12/13. Not challenge for a 1st team spot. No way.

Buying two midfield players isn't far fetched. Our seemingly promising bunch are still 2-4 years away from playing. Carrick and Ji-Sung Park are both 30. If Gibson is going this summer then we don't have many options left. We're alright but should be better.

dont get me wrong,id love to sign the lad,the idea of us signing 2midfielders has the inner transfer muppet in me ready to explode like a pregnant gremlin

My rule of thumb: if press of a country other than the country of the player in question link United with someone, United aren't really interested and/or there's something else up.

Feel free to shoot it down in flames.

 Incredible searching!

Or boring git with too much time on his hands.

One of the two I guess.

Not really.

Take this for an example. I've just gone on "Advanced search" typed in red chiefs user name, clicked to check on transfer forum posts from 6 months or older.

There he's claiming Enyema is a level above PiG from what he's seen. Or a post declaring Gervinho is way better than a potential target.

Good for Bayern if that happens. They do need a new keeper and new center backs

He certainly watches Bayern Munich, and when asked about Pastore:

TBF that has little to do with the fact the lad possess superior passing skills to Kaka.

Obviously he's fond of Lukaku as well:

I don't know about more potential. But IMO he is way more ready than either to be a EPL first teamer right now. He will make a great signing for us, Chelsea or even Liverpool.

He's not just a fan of foreign players, he's obviously watched Man City a lot as well
You must be kidding. I have seen Silva play on the left plenty of times for them. Being one of City's best attacking players on most occasions.

Someone asked about Eden Hazard, here's what the chief had to say:

Hew is like a young Ronaldinho in that outwide, behind a striker or being the most advanced midfielder suits him down to the ground.

He likes the look of Mata as well:

That is why I wouldn't mind us going for the lad. He is one of the last naturally left footed wingers out there. Plus he is a good player.

In all fairness, I'm probably being cynical as well as Brwned, but it doesn't take much effort at all.

Doubt he'd want to move to a new country, a new league and put his first XI place for France in jeopardy for Euro 2012.

He'd move to Arsenal as thats obviously a step up and he can hardly fail to be around the starting lineup with no Fabregas and Nasri seemingly on the way out(i'm aware they play different positions but less numbers mean more chances).

Would mean one of two things, for me:

a) They're thinking of moving Song back into centre back and letting M'Vila be the holding player
b) They're going for a more solid 4231 with two defensive players rather than Song + a playmaker (Wilshere, Ramsey etc.)

Neither seem to make much sense, the former especially. Obviously, they need to be adding to the squad but Song's one to start pretty much every game and M'Vila likewise, which means that Ramsey still won't be getting that much game time, never mind the fact they play the same role and play it similarly. Surely it's bollocks.

Arsène Wenger has responded to Arsenal's troubled start to the season by making a bid for the Rennes holding midfielder Yann M'Vila. The manager's attempt to strengthen his team came as hopes grew that Jack Wilshere will return from ankle trouble to face Udinese in Wednesday's pivotal Champions League play-off second leg.

M'Vila, who has established himself as a regular in the France team, would cost £12m. The 21-year-old is under contract until 2015 but Rennes have allowed Wenger to talk to him. Arsenal's manager also has an interest in Sochaux's attacking midfielder Marvin Martin.

Wenger's immediate concern, though, is his midfield to face Udinese. Wilshere, who has not featured this season, had been considered a major doubt for the trip to north-eastern Italy, where Arsenal will attempt to protect a 1-0 lead and qualify for the group stage of Europe's elite competition for the 14th year in a row.

He left the Emirates Stadium after last Tuesday's first-leg against the Italian team with a foot in a protective boot and he missed the morale-sapping 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Saturday, when the problems mounted for Wenger.

Wilshere, though, came back to training on Thursday and provided he suffers no reaction before the squad fly to Italy on Tuesday afternoon, he will board with them. "Jack has a chance to play," Wenger said. "He has trained Thursday, Friday, Saturday."

Wenger's attitude towards Wilshere will be coloured with caution but given the stakes at the Stadio Friuli, he will be tempted to press him into action. The manager was without nine players against Liverpool through injury and suspension, and he lost the centre-half Laurent Koscielny to a back spasm in the 16th minute.

He will be able to pick the midfielder Alex Song and the forward Gervinho, as their three-match bans apply only to domestic competitions, while the central defender Johan Djourou "has a chance", according to Wenger, of returning from a hamstring injury. The midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, who was sent off against Liverpool and will be suspended for Sunday's league fixture at Manchester United, will also be available against Udinese.

The obvious solution to the club's personnel problems is for Wenger to strengthen in the transfer market, and many supporters at the Emirates were keen to remind the Frenchman of that. Wenger said that Arsenal had "the money to buy players, we are not short of money", and he rejected the notion that the more he was urged to spend, the less likely he would be to do so.

"People feel I'm stubborn … I'm not," Wenger added. "I just want to do the best for the team and to buy the right players. If I have shown one thing in the last 15 years, it's that I have bought good players here.

"What you forget is we have bought players. We have bought Gervinho, [Alex Oxlade-] Chamberlain, [Carl] Jenkinson, [Ryo] Miyaichi, and you will see during the season they are top-quality players. But at the moment, we have to give them some time.

"Overall, we will buy. We will bring experienced players as well. People just say 'buy' but it's to buy the right player which is difficult."
