Yann M’Vila

I'd have him or Javi Martinez over a defensively inept (attacking) midfielder. We have offensive power enough to score us goals but we need to pack a punch in the defensive department.

Would prefer him over Martinez personally, he'd give us something different whereas I think Martinez would just give us another Carrick. Not that I'd be complaining I just think a bit of variety'd be even better.

Ball possession is key nowadays. A defensive midfielder needs to be as comfortable with the ball as a cultured playmaker. I haven't watched M'Vila enough but I liked what I saw from Martinez. Is M'Vila as comfortable with the ball as he is?

He's not as good on the ball but he's still very comfortable in possession and uses the ball well, plus he's a better defensive player.

Martinez is better and more versatile, but M'Vila isn't a bad second option.

Is Martinez actually available though? He signed a big contract with Bilbao last Summer and I wouldn't be surprised if he was very reluctant to leave given that they're developing a really promising team. I don't think Bilbao have any need to sell him either although I'm not an expert on their financial situation.

Could he excel next to Carrick in the middle of the park? That, my friends, is the question.

Not necessarily. We need another midfielder who can provide an alternative to Carrick. It would be a bonus for him to play well alongside Carrick. He needs to be able to do the business next to Scholes/Giggs/Cleverley/Anderson.

Spot on. That is what we need most of all in my view. If it turns out he can play alongside Carrick then great, but for me we simply have to have another option in the DM position. M'Vila, Martinez, Defour, Banega, i would be delighted with any one of those players.

Defour? Whenever I see Porto he's on the bench. I think he's a player that got a name for himself due to Fergie writing him a letter. Don't think he's anything special. Banega isn't very convincing either in my opinion.

Is he the Essien/Toure type? Powerful, ball winner, make runs through the middle with an occasional eye for goal? Or just a De Jong clone?

He certainly isn't as limited as De Jong. He is strong, and good in the tackle but is comfortable on the ball. Martinez is probably the better ball player, but M'Vila has good vision, a good touch but he could improve on the number of goals he scores, and he only has 4 competitive goals for Rennes, which means Martinez is also better at getting goals. In my opinion, we have enough goals in or team, we lack some defensive protection in the midfield and I would be very worried if we lost Carrick to injury. We need to make M'Vila or Martinez a top priority and if we could get Hazard as well we would have done great summer business.

Fair enough, but my point was a DM of sorts is what we need desperately. Who it maybe and who is the better fit is always going to be subjective and therefore open for debate.

Although we are back on top, an injury to Carrick may see that change fairly quickly. I have not been filled with confidence by our midfield performances whenever Carrick is rested. I believe this is the one area where we are most vulnerable, and as we saw against Ajax and again against Bilbao, we have absolutely no-one who can provide effective cover for Carrick should he be missing for whatever reason.

A DM is an absolute must this summer in my view, once we have that position covered any other signings i would view as a added bonus, rather than a necessity.

He reminds me alot of carrick actually, perhaps more mobile but his passing and defensive work is very similar.

Great young player neway. Would certainly be a plus on our midfield right now.

I really like him and would prefer us to go for him ahead of any of the attacking players we're linked with at the moment. I think he's good enough defensively to partner any of Giggs/Cleverley/Anderson, and smart enough to play with Carrick against better sides. He'll be starting at the Euro's I think, and started against Germany in their recent friendly.

I doubt Arsenal's pulling power is that high anymore.
I agree. Though in France, they are still held with high regard which is bizzare. You ask most footballers there which Premier League club they'd want to join and 60% would probably say Arsenal, because of the manager or the players who once played there.

Don't know if it's needed anymore but i found this.

French players likes of Vieira, Petit, Henry & Pires flourished into world class players under Wenger so I don't see why it is bizarre. Two of them similar kind of midfielders to him so what better place to come and learn his trade?

I suppose he could then be sold off in a few years to a better club

:(

If that is true, surely he'll decide for us given that he's suppose to be a huge fan and our midfield situation. I can't see it happening though, Arsenal seems like a good bet.

Reports from France saying that he will ''decide between Arsenal and Manchester United''.

Arsenal face a tough summer. It's not easy to attract a top player like M'Villa if they can't persuade RVP to sign a new contract. From the outside it's looks like he will follow the footstep of Nasri and Fabregas. Not a good sign for Wenger.
