Its happens in games its called covering. They are both at fault
AWB isn’t blameless either but this is just a common theme with Lindelöf and many of us have had enough. Same old story every time.

vidic or Ferdinand clear that no problem.

Because as the cross comes in AWB clearly is tracking De Jong but lets him go.
And he should not be ball watching and see there’s a man in the box and to and mark him. Instead he just stands there like a muppet and doesn’t even react.

Both are at fault, Lindelof wasn't marking anyone, I guess he thought he'll deal with the cross or something. AWB was marking the player and just decided to let him go.

Proving my own point. Nobody else in the box and he’s defending thin air.

what else do you expect him to be doing if not marking his direct opponent? it’s insane the excuses you make for him.

A centre back should never be letting a fullback do the job for him.

Looking at that, considering there's no one for about 40 yards, they should be doubling up on him.

You don't even need to use two GOATs as examples.

Smalling deals with that all day every day. It's a shambles that Lindelof is ahead of him in our pecking order.

Well yeah, that's what I said.

Lindelof gets beaten by the cross (which is a good cross) and AWB is caught sleeping.

I have not said Lindelof isnt at fault. Im arguiing against those in this thread that are saying AWB isnt at fault here. You have one person claiming he passed De Jong into Lindelof and he was within his rights to stand in the same spot whilst the cross came in and De Jong scores. All because they want to solely blame Lindelof.

I dont care for the agenda. For this goal the whole back 4 are at fault

Maguire was very much moving out to cover WIlliams, he started moving in again and was caught out of position so yes, at fault. AWB was slightly behind DejOng and had the wrong body position, stopped movign when he should have tried to put him off and at fault yes. But Lindelof had absolutely no need to cover Maguire space that is absolutely rubbish, there was ONE player anywhere near him, behind him and he didnt watch him at all once he was in the box, just moved towards the near post, absolutely diaboilical and its hardly the first time he has been caught out this season from crosses.
Wy on earth are you going on about players having to step forward to cover space of other players when there is ONE player to recieve the cross who is directly behind him, your talking rubbish you dont hav eto cover spaces of other players when there is one player anywhere near the ball in the box, you have to cover the opposing player, that is it, he is the only danger, so mentiining under 10s as some kind of condescending argument, maybe you never got further than that level then if I can be condescendign back, absolute rubbish you are talking
He wasn't slightly behind him. He started off goal side, squared on, in a position to defend him. If, for whatever reason he feels he can't stay with a stationary man, then he communicates, he tells Lindelof to pick him up so he can pick daisies from the semi circle. You don't just leave him for absolutely no reason.

Sorry, but you're wrong. The near sided CB should never be moving outside the post unless he absolutely has to, and then he doesn't commit to the player, he holds and waits for the CM to sweep across.

Yes you cover the space. If you have a free man you ALWAYS shuffle across. That way, you can cut out a low cross, you are in position to cover the blindside run to the near post. The alternative is Lindelof marks the player and AWB does literally nothing, and I mean nothing defensively. He's not covering an area, he's not in a position to cut out, and he's not marking a man. He does nothing.

It's not a condescending when it's what happens. Shuffling across to cover someone when out of position is something you're taught very early on. You're not an individual. You work as a unit. Suggesting Lindelof marks the player and AWB do nothing when our other CB is out of position is absolute nonsense.

If only Lindelof could defend as well as the fanboys that defend him so much.

Whenever he makes a mistake its always another players fault instead.

Lindelof doesn’t even need to win the cross, just stop his opponent getting to it. If he drops 2 yards and gets his body goal side and blocks him the cross goes nowhere.

instead he marks space... space doesn’t score.

It's called zonal marking mate.

In the heat of the moment I can understand AWB passing him on as he expects the LW or a midfielder to be coming in at the back post. He sees lindelof has nobody else to mark so he expects him to take charge, and he doesn’t.

neither of them come out looking good from it but it’s 80/20 lindelofs error.

a centre back marks the striker slap bang in the middle of the goal.

Who the hell zonal marks on a cross with 1 man on the box  you’re showing here why you don’t understand defending at all. I can finally understand why it doesn’t make sense to you.

OK, €38 million gets you...

No pace.
No bravery.
No aerial presence.
No positional awareness.
Can't tackle.
Zero aggression.

Get rid.

Its a bit silly to do that as the CB can go to attack the ball and what if they miss. As a defender you have to expect the worst. It shite defending period

How will I ever recover from this fatal blow.

The whole defence could have done better for the second goal but AWB and Lindelof are mainly to blame. He’s still a very good CB.

One more thing, Lindelof can clearly see Maguire is in front of him way out of position at the front. He' knows hes the only CB in the crossing area so obviously its his job to deal with a striker.

Imagine Vidic or Rio being in that situation and deciding to have a cup of tea while Gary Neville deals with a striker on a cross on his own.

Yeah, I remember when we had Rio and Vidic and never conceded one silly goal. Those were good times weren't they!

I think he's good for a club like Leicester or Spurs, but if we want to challenge for the title and go far in the CL, he will always have moments

If Rio or Vidic made that mistake or got caught out of position. Neville would have covered them

looks ropey with the ball in the air and in the end we will have to replace him i think... but a good season overall, part of our best partnership in 7 or 8 years

He's kinda guilty on the first goal also... if you're coming up that far out, better block the channel and put the ball out of touch

You think the club has 60m spare for the next hipster signing?

No, however that doesn’t stop me thinking that Lindelof is a seriously underwhelming and weak defender who we need to upgrade (at some point) if we want to win things though.

So no examples then, thats very compelling evidence
Are you suggesting Neville never had to cover his CBs and they never got caught of of position?

I’m a big critic of his but post lockdown I think he’s been very good and was good tonight, AWB at fault for their goal in my view. Starting to think we need to buy a CB to partner lindelof not one to partner Maguire
