VAR, Refs and Linesmen | General Discussion

You’d think that with 2.6k posts and still being a newbie you’d start putting some efforts into your posts, you quite legitimately offer less to this forum than Schmeichel’s Cartwheel.
You'd think that with 19.7k posts you'd be used to a little banter from opposition fans. Now i need to learn about this Schmeichel’s Cartwheel, he/she sounds lovely.

It seems that as allowed by IFAB individual countries can, with FIFAs approval tewak around the edges of the laws as long as that interpretation is applied in all games played under the respective countries FAs

Both the Spanish FA and the FA have it seems declared that if it bounces of another part of the body it isn’t handball.

Of course it should have been ruled out but I can only think that UEFA either aren’t able to or don’t want to tweak the guidance for their competitions

Even if it hadn’t deflected his arm was tucked in when the ball hit him. Just an absolutely indefensible decision, by any standard.

Always nice to lose a game through no fault of your own. Lovely feeling.

All VAR has done is make these awful decisions more annoying as they check them and still give them. Absolute morons.

Referees are now more important than most players. You can predict what type of game it will be based on some refs personalities. Atletico at home last year wasn't even a football match.

You can discuss referees separately to how poor we are, and there's no other sport in the world where wannabee stars influence the actual outcome so much

Unfathomable to give that after a VAR check.

More and more I prefer the system in baseball where reviews are all handled off site. There’s a lot in asking these muppets to admit they fecked up in front of an entire stadium - especially when their judgement was already poor. The point should not be to allow referees to stamp their impact on the game, but to get the decisions correct.

In what universe is that a pen? Bounces off his thigh into his hand that is positioned in a way to make sure he doesn't handball it from the shot  so laughable

I’m just heated about the result

Genuinely unbelievable decision again, fecking hell. Where do they find these clowns? I mean, you just need a minimum of common sense to get that right.

If Martinez had his arm far out I'd at least understand it, even if the ball hit his leg first, but his arm was close to his body too ffs.

Another decision that nobody understands or defends (not even most rival fans) except the referees.

The penalty call was an absolute joke.

I was watching in a bar so couldn't hear but what happened with the call at the end? It looked like Martinez trod on his heel and removed his boot?

Not even sure if it's an exaggeration to say that's one of the worst VAR decisions I've ever seen.

Martinez's hands are unduly far away from his body, the ball strikes his tricep, the ball ricochets off of his leg before it strikes his tricep, and he's very close to the player taking the shot.

I just cannot fathom how that could be given as a penalty. I've not seen anyone even try to present a justification.

I really want Erik to come out and nail the officials in the post match. I mean why not?

I went to RAWK to look for a more fair, neutral perspective than tonight's VAR and wasn't disappointed:
United got screwed there.
Feel like that’s a harsh penalty, but rules different between Europe and the league right?
Can't believe that's not been overturned. Then again,it's man utd. feck 'em.
haha - terrible call. The ball clearly hit the leg first and then traveled 1 foot to hit the hand. I love it!
The ball struck Martinez's knee before hitting his arm. Never a pen.
Just seen it and no it wasn't a penalty

To reiterate, that's RAWK talking.

There is literally not a single planet or dimension where that's a penalty.

Even my idiot friends who support Pool agrees that the ref and VAR got this horrible wrong.

Bullshit call. Even the commentators were in no doubt the pen would get overturned. The ref and VAR officials deserve to be pelted for this.

They change rule on the fly now. Good to know UEFA is still corrupted as ever.
fecking A. Stuff like this makes me wish Super League was a thing.

there’s basically only two explanations for that pen, one the refs are complete and utter fecking bastards. Or they were bribed. There is literally no other conclusion. It makes no sense how that can be a pen with the rules in place.

This should be investigated. Will it? Of course not. But it should. Either incompetence or bribery. The refs involved should not officiate another game.

It gets overturned in PL it was never getting overturned tonight

VAR has confirmed that referees are incompetent because they have no brain, and not because they don't see incidents.

I could do a better job, ffs.

It infuriates me that no one or nothing holds referees accountable. It is so injust, very weird in times like these.

They will be officiating the next match as if nothing has happened.
