Toby Alderweireld | Times: Spurs willing to sell due to Alderweireld's demands for £150k/week

Smallings 90k a week wages can go towards that. Might get £30m in todays market for Smalling too.

Big Dave behind a CB partnership of Bailly and Alderweireld. Although I can't see that CB partnership going the whole season without any injuries.
Just need some proper competition at full back and that's a hell of a defence.

Rojo, Blind & Darmian will leave before Jones & Smalling.

I'd be incredibly happy with signing Toby, him and Bailly would form a great partnership, and Smalling, Jones & Lindelof will be squad players depending on injury & form.
Next season Tuanzebe I think will need another loan, and TFM will continue to play RB also to deputise for Valencia, though I wouldn't be opposed to a new RB and TFM going on another loan either.

If true, then can Spurs blame him? Strict wage, he's not getting younger, and not enough trophies to showcase his talents. Why stay if there are better options?

Snap him Mourinho!! Swap with Jones?

Oh God, we could do with him. Make it happen, FSG!

On a sidenote, are Spurs really not capable of paying that kind of money to one of their best players?

His injuries over the last 2 seasons (this and last) are a major concern to me

Need to sell Smalling, Blind, Jones, Darmian and promote TFM, Axel first.

No more 29 year olds thank you (he will be 29 in early March). The next manager will inherit tons of players that are on the decline due to age, if we are not careful. The Matic signing already looks like a change rather than a dramatic improvement.

Nor should we be increasing our wage bill for the defence when it already works reasonably well.

I'd also be very cautious about signing defenders that play in a successful system like Spurs, or Burnley. Will they look as good in a different system ?

"Alderweireld, who turns 29 on March 2, currently earns £50,000-a-week at the north London club and is said to be refusing to budge on his £150,000-a-week wage demands. The club reportedly made a final offer of £110,000-a-week, but the defender turned it down."

Saw this somewhere, that's too low for a player of his calibre and at his age, 29. Make sense for him to want a major contract before reaching 30s, where he may no longer have the chance.

"Alderweireld’s contract contains a one-year extension option, which is scheduled to activate in the summer of 2019 and would see him contracted until 2020. But it also features a £25m release clause. In the summer of 2019, the central defender would be permitted to leave if a rival club were to pay £25m and complete the transfer at least 14 days before the closure of the window."

Basically, his contract is currently a year and a half, expired until summer 2019, but Spurs can extend till summer 2020. Spurs will play hardball this summer 2018, so maybe around £60M-70M should suffice (Van Dijk £75 M to Liverpool).

I think our centre back options are already superb.
:D I like your confidence, but 'superb' is stretching it too far.

Think people have lost sight of how good our current CBs are because of the way we setup and the ponytailed freak behind them. Alderweireld is different mustard to our current options.

Good point, I know they recently renewed HK - but if true, this could set a precedent for the likes of Eriksen, Alli & Lloris to look elsewhere if they want to get paid well.

He's looked great last couple of seasons but has really struggled with injuries of late. Not sure its the right move for us, last thing we need is yet another CB who we cant keep fit.

He's had just 1 serious injury in his entire career probably, which happens to be a hamstring this season. Shouldn't be an issue.

Sign him, see if Spurs would be willing to take Jones/Smalling/Lindelof in part exchange. Excellent CB, very solid and reliable.

Its nothing to do with wage demands IMO, he is wanting a move to an elite club. He will be sold in the summer, highest bidder.

For all the Smalling posts. Do we have enough fit defenders to sell him? He is not good enough to be a starting CB, but really good as a back up. We'd be mad to sell Smalling .

Not injuries. He's suffered one injury this season.

Yeah. I just read that Eriksen is "only" on 75.000 a week. That's crazy if true, as I'm sure he could easily double that somewhere else. I mean, it's much less than Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum from us for instance.

A pretty serious one though, out for the last 3 months.

Oh yeah, of course. But I've seen posts almost label him as a regular visitor to the treatment table which he clearly isn't - at least not on the level of our own Phil Jones. I think he's had two injuries since he signed for you guys, right?

Yeah, and the app stats would agree. 55 games in 15/16. 39 last season and only 15 this season.

Would be an incredible signing, though. Terrific defender.

Bit of both probably. No trophies and not getting paid enough.

Id say we are offering him what has been stated in the article, but rumors are he wants a release clause and Levy wont add that in, I can see City going in for him to, possibly Real as well as you lot. Top defender but I wouldn't be overly bothered if we can get circa £50M for him.

How good on the ball is he? It's been that long since I've seen him play I've forgot plus Vertonghen has always been the one that stood out in that regard anyway

He has a great long ball on him and he is a tidy passer but hes not gonna bring the ball out like Verts does, hes not the fastest either. What he is good at is tackling, blocking marking etc, very rarely does he have a brain fart, in fact I cant remember on off the top on my head.

Just heard he is injured again, same leg as his hammy.

We would be mental to not go for him, he is just what we need. He's good on the ball too, would take our defence up to a new level. I really hope we're in for him

Yeah that worries the hell out of me, 50m for a CB off the back of a long term and seemingly persistent muscle injury. Too soon to say Kompany mrk II?
