Toby Alderweireld | Times: Spurs willing to sell due to Alderweireld's demands for £150k/week

It looks like he’s leaving: Comments attributed to Pochettino regarding Vertongen and believing Spurs would thrive without Alderweireld.

Toby has clearly decided he wants out and Spurs are happy to let him go for the right price.

Where has Pochettino said this?

Really hope Levy sticks to his guns about not selling within the league, he would be great for all the top 6 teams.

That wasn't my question though, I'm asking why you want him to keep this mentality up?

Because Alderweireld would make City, Chelsea and Liverpool better - and Levy is more likely to sell to one of them than us.

Modric, plus he allegedly said something about never selling another star to United after Berbatov.

Isn't that right @GlastonSpur ?
Modric was sold abroad after refusing him a move to Chelsea the season before. I don't remember any genuine links to us the season he was sold but it doesn't matter anyways as selling abroad obviously makes sense. I don't think there's any special beef with United, he just prefers selling abroad which makes perfect sense but will sell someone Poch okays domestically as well if the money is good. Basically any ambitious clubs policy really.

I do think there is a bit of animosity with the Modric and Berbatov deals as both were tapped up, in a very clear way.

What was special? I'm genuinely curious.

We had agreed to sell him to City, so he was heading there for talks, United sent there own car and picked him up and basically done the deal. Berbatov wanted the United move and was on strike at Tottenham, Levy had no option but to sell it was the last hour of the window. We managed to get Frazier Campbell on loan in return (what a player) and United made a "contribution" to the Spurs Foundation to avoid any FA comeback on the tapping up.

I didn't know that, fantastic . I just remembered us coming in at the last moment and Berba choosing us.

I was on holidays at the time, no real internet access and read it in the pool bar sipping a beer, I remember it well. :D What a shit summer that was for us, lost Robbie too.

I don’t really get that. If you agreed to sell him to City why did you not want to sell him to United? We’d probably be offering more of a transfer fee and Man City would have been more on Spurs’s level at that time, so more of a direct rival.

Are Tottenham really so ABU?

Because there was clear tapping up and head turning going on by United, Levy refused to do business because of it. What does ABU mean?

Aye but you’d already agreed to sell him to City by then. Why would Levy care if he then went to United for a higher fee? If anyone was getting fecked over it was City.

Anyone But United.

Yeah but all summer this had went on, the tapping up and alleged illegal approaches. Levy simply didn't want to deal with United because of it. I mean we sold Carrick very amicably.

Bizarre he actually sold Berbatov to us in the end then. Not exactly hardballing doing that.

Notwithstanding the striking, if that’s what happened, but that’s on Berbatov.

It just seems incredibly petty and probably Levy’s greatest claim to fame in football - never selling to United again no matter what.

I guess it depends how you look at it, I don't think it was petty at all, he was trying not to get bullied but didn't quite work out. We sold him because he was gonna stink out the whole club, he made that pretty clear. You have to remember this was nearly 10 years.

I don't get why you think its Levy's biggest claim to fame.

This story seems to be gathering pace.

All highly respected media sources, even diehard United fan Paul Merson has picked up on it. Clearly a deal is in the works, good thing too because we're currently rather short of centerbacks - at least those of the highly competent variety.

All we need do now is give him a song, I'll leave that to the more creative members.

This ABU thing is getting cringeworthy. The world doesn't revolve around United.

As for Alderwereild - it'll be poor from Spurs to sell him because a) he will probably seek a move to a rival b) there are probably some envious glances at Walker strolling to a medal and c) after building a strong team up the right way, why throw it away now?

150k a week isn't extraordinary in football terms (which is revolting to say by the way). If you sell Sissoko and Llorente that might be 150k a week off the books.

His name isnt the easiest to get a song for, we just stuck to Toby :D.

Is the Daily Star really a highly respected media source? I agree he will be sold but I doubt very much if the only interest is from United.

Its not about the wages alone id say we are probably happy enough to meet his demands, he has wanted a move to an elite club his whole career, hence the release clauses he likes in his contracts. You say its poor for us to sell him? What can we do if he doesn't wanna stay?
