Toby Alderweireld | Times: Spurs willing to sell due to Alderweireld's demands for £150k/week

Beligian journalist said long back that Alderweireld has 25 Million release clause for his last year if contract extension is triggered. Matt Law is just reporting that player haven't signed contract and dropping him for such big games might make him change his decision for renewal.
Even if that release clause is true, it only activates in the summer of 2019. So, Spurs can easily say no to any transfer until then, or ask for £50m+ this summer. Either way, he's injured, so it's strange that him not being in the squad against Juve means he's going to leave in the summer, especially given that he wasn't in the squad against Arsenal a few days back either. He clearly hasn't fully recovered from injury, and imo it's just another attempt by Matt Law to destabilise another one of Chelsea's rivals.

That's what Matt Law mentioned in his article and I posted same thing in the OP, that players should prove their fitness after long term injuries.

Journalist is basing this on player declared himself fit for North London derby game, and he also haven't signed new contract yet.

Not sure how writing 1 article on telegraph can destabilise Spurs if everything reported is not true.

Bold part is what was reported, that this summer is the only chance for Spurs to sell him for big money if he doesn't sign extension.

Toby Alderweireld would improve us massively.

Alderweireld next to Bailly would be fantastic. He's worth what he'd cost.

It will be awesome if we can get him! Not sure how likely but if he is not renewing contract, worth a try. Get rid of Smalling and Rojo if we can get Toby. On side note, get rid of Smalling anyway.

Exactly. Ready made, top quality and knows the league.

Best CB in the league for the past 2 years easily. Bailey is up there for me too, would be a great pairing.

Yeah I would say it's either him or Vertonghen, but it's much of a muchness both are awesome.

Tobys ability on the ball would help as well. Another player we should of got from Southampton when he was there, rather than let Spurs nab him!

55 appearances in his first season at Spurs, 39 last and only 15 so far this. I'd be concerned that injuries will start to affect his performances like they did with Vidic and Kompany. While his contract situation actually isn't that bad from Spurs' point of view what with them having Sanchez I can see a big offer for Alderweireld Spurs being 'happy' to sell

From Atletico, he was only on loan at Southampton.

Would suit you guys perfectly, I would say he could be sold this summer unless he signs a new deal, £40-50M would be good business for us.

Wtf! Call yourself a Spurs fan? You almost sound like you'd be happy to see this happen.

Stuff selling our best CB to a rival. Would be terrible. That said...Verts has been the better player the past 18 months but Toby is a bit younger and the fact is as a partnership they are amazing.

Mate calm down, I think you misread what I said. I'm not saying we should sell him to United. If he doesn't sign a new contract before the summer he has to be sold, how exactly does that not make me a Spurs fan? Don't be so dramatic.

I think he is the best signing we can make in the CB department, ticks all the boxes for me.
A fit Bailly and Toby is the perfect mix of youth and experience of calm and crazy and they both have this calmness about their play which we lack at the back .

If we can get him for 40-50 mill, it would be a very good buy, Bailly - Toby would be up there with the best CB partnership in the league. We have too many CBs but not many with the required quality.

No I know it's just the way you wrote it. I was like hold on a second!

Personally I'd just keep him for another 18 months and let him leave for free. We signed him cheap anyway and it guarantees us a world class CB until that time. He'll be nearly 31 by the time he then leaves and we'd have had his best years.

Fwiw I think there's no way we sell him this summer to a rival.

If he doesn't sign a new contract - and if the intention became to let him leave for free - then we could keep him for another 30 months (until summer 2020) if we want .... unless someone chimes in with a £25m offer in 18 months time.

You know perfectly well that if he doesn't sign a new contract you will only keep him until that clause is activated, which it of course will be. Given the tight finances at the club, it is surely highly likely that you'd sell him this window if he doesn't want to sign a new contract.

I see no reason why a club wouldn't, he signs before summer or we flog him. Then go back to our favorite club and get de Ligt and get Verts signed up for his last big contract. Verts, Dier, Sanchez and de Ligt would be solid.

He can pass a ball.
Fyi for those kind of cbs at the moment.

Really? Why does it seem like a big deal that TA has a contract running down if JVs expires first?

Because of the release clause if Spurs take the option of extending his contract. And probably Verthonghen is likely to just stay on based on reports.

Alderweireld & Bailly as our CB's and we could even play a Pogba+Matic midfield.

Would be a major improvement, but if we were to go with a 2 man midfield with Pogba, we'd still need to go up in class in other positions, like full back.

I really hope Alderweireld sign a new deal, but even if he doesn't I can't see Levy agreeing to sell to a direct rival if he can avoid it.

It would be hard to ignore the will of the player too..

Of course, but Levy did refuse to sell Modric to Chelsea, and I can see him doing the same unless Poch and Levy decide the money would make up for it. And that's only if Alderweireld is pushing for a club in England and refuse other offers.

Having said that, we may find an agreement with him.

He's probably already been tapped up and been offered a ridiculous amount of money. Actually, I'd be surprised if he hasn't..

Money or Poch?:D

You’re forgetting Juan Foyth, potentially eventually better than everyone mentioned here.

Alderweireld-Bailly is an elite partnership for United, both elite defenders.

All players are tapped up today, so of course he is. What he chooses to do with the information is his choice, and maybe he wants to reach an agreement with Levy, but wants more money? I don't know. I'm not saying you're wrong and he is the player we are most likely to lose of the ones we really want to keep. However, he still got a contract and Levy would refuse to sell to a rival unless be believe it somehow benefit Spurs, which would mean you'd have to pay through the roof for him.

Time will tell, and I really hope he signs.

You guys sold Kyle Walker to City last summer - a team who finished 8 points behind you the previous summer.

Yes, for a world record fee for a defender at the time and I doubt any team except City would offer anywhere near that. Poch and Levy was able to put the money to use and I assume they judged it so that the fee would benefit Spurs. I didn't like the transfer, but that's what I think happened. In the current market and strengthening a rival I doubt he would be cheap, and it's not impossible we would chose to keep him.

I mean, it was a record for 10 days and Van Dijk was already rumoured to be worth £75m at the time you sold Walker. Reckon if United or another English team put down a fee similar to the Van Dijk fee then you'd sell and I don't see any other clubs outside England being willing to match that like Walker.

What's his injury record like? Is this current one a freak occurrence or is it becoming the norm? We already have enough injury prone defenders at the club.

Far from impossible, and with the TV deal it's harder to sell abroad for anywhere near the same amount. Do you reckon United would be willing to spend 75m on a 29 year old?
