Toby Alderweireld | Times: Spurs willing to sell due to Alderweireld's demands for £150k/week

A defence of Jones-Bailly-Alderweireld-Shaw with De Gea behind them could win a the league, while also containing enough quality to build play from the back much better than what’s currently on show. Alderweireld’s the best in Europe and will be recognised as such once he plays for an elite club.

Even Smalling could be sustained next to him; he’s like Blind in his measured reading of the game and distribution, so all Chris would have to do is roll the call 10 yards to him.

Can you explain this? I'm pretty sure he is recognized pretty well as he has the same platform at Spurs.

Id say we are offering him what has been stated in the article, but rumors are he wants a release clause and Levy wont add that in, I can see City going in for him to, possibly Real as well as you lot. Top defender but I wouldn't be overly bothered if we can get circa £50M for him.
There will be no 50mill when his one year option is a 25mill release fee.

That doesn't kick until the season after next, he is in contract till June 2020 with a years option. Then if we take the further year his clause is active, if he is to be sold this summer you will be looking at £40-50M.

Who do you think Spurs would replace him with if you do get 40/50M? Any kind of swap deal is probably out of the question I think.

I dunno, while Sanchez has been shaky at times I think he has done very will given his age at CB and how tough the PL is for new CBs. We have Foyth, Sanchez and Verts possibly Dier. What we need more than anything else ATM is someone to push Eriksen and another forward who can play wide or back up to Kane.... A swap deal? Id love Rashford :D.

lol what? You telling me a brand new CB partnership at a new club can't work right of the bat? In my Fifa save I have no issues. :D

Selling three centre backs with the issues we have had with injuries is madness even if we got Alderweireld. Unless Tuanzebe was going to be allowed to settle in then we would have Bailly, Lindelof, Rojo, Alderweireld and Tuanzebe. Also the club will not want to sell two English internationals and two players with title winning experience in my opinion.

Would be a great signing... if the injuries don't become a recurring thing. Would be just like us though that he comes and is always injured like Bailly is. Potentially class partnership, potentially only play like 10 games a season together and we still rely on jones/smalling/lindelof (who has looked much better recently so he has hope himself).

You see this is the problem with our fanbase, they let their compassion for our players blind them. Jones is nowhere near as good as Alderweireld.

While Jones CAN be good when having a good day, he just isn't consistent enough with performances or injuries. He spreads a nervousness throughout the whole defence, we just need to move on.
1 poor match and he spreads nervousness throughout? What about the other 20 games that he has played this season?

For all the Smalling posts. Do we have enough fit defenders to sell him? He is not good enough to be a starting CB, but really good as a back up. We'd be mad to sell Smalling .
Apart from Bailly and Toby, we got Jones, Rojo, Lindelof, Tuanzebe as backup.

Vidic & Rio were superb, do you honestly place Jones and Smalling, or for that matter, Rojo & Blind in the same 'superb' category..?

As a pairing, no. As a group of CBs, I think they're superb. And we're not talking about signing Vidic or Rio, we're talking about a good defender that plays for Spurs.. Would he actually improve our starting 11? I'm not sure. Would he improve our squad? Sure, a bit. Is it an area that needs attention right now? Absolutely not in my opinion.

He's had more than 1 poor game, he's shaky all the time.

Yes he can do some good things through a game, but he's a poor fit with Smalling, they just don't work together. I can't see Jose getting rid of Smalling as he's our best natural defender.

So unfortunately Jones has to go IMO.

Jones is a good player. Smalling is poor at playing it out from the back. But we dont need to sell both of them.

Spurs have a major shock coming if they think they will keep their squad together paying 2005 level wages.

Spurs have the 12th highest wage bill in world football, it's not as low as many people think. As a club Spurs have to be financially viable, and can't go way over their turnover, doesn't mean that they are cheap or doesn't want to pay the players, but rather that going down that route without oil-doping etc would be suicide.

Agree that he’s been chaotic every few weeks, but he that has generally come next to Smalling; he’s generally been better with Rojo or Bailly. Considering they’re best friends, they don’t half lack chemistry. Put him next to Alderweireld, and again I think he’ll be ok.

I see Jones as a viable option at rightback; Valencia offers nothing going forward anyway, while Jones’ robust presence on that side might see Shaw given more licence to push forward on the other. Most of his early football for United came in that role to much hyperbole and it’s somewhere his dubious concentration and positioning can be Bailly’ed out by Eric in behind him.

I’d sooner see Rojo or Lindelof go than Smalling or Jones, providing they never play centrally together.

I think if he does leave Spurs are well equipped already to replace him. I really like Vertonghen and that Sanchez looks pretty decent.

It looks like he’s leaving: Comments attributed to Pochettino regarding Vertongen and believing Spurs would thrive without Alderweireld.

Toby has clearly decided he wants out and Spurs are happy to let him go for the right price.

He's a world class CB but I think Vertonghen is better and has proved himself more reliable this season. Plus we already have Sanchez there who now has almost a years experience in the PL.

We've also done really well without him in the side so he's obviously not indispensable. I can see us selling to the highest bidder this summer. We will be looking for 60 million plus.
