Which airport are you flying to? Hopefully some blue state. I work for a reasonably big software concern and we monitor any rejections from airport closely. We haven't had any in the last month. Remember, this is for candidates flying from India and not any of the banned countries. But it is an indicator on how laws are interpreted and enforced at airport. Things look to have stabilized.

For proposed travel ban countries, I haven't seen any flags in the immigration forums that we normally check but I think as a precaution, do basic stuff like no beard, no smartphones, clean up twitter/facebook, be ready to share passwords, be polite and courteous. Don't argue if things don't go your way. Many have suggested the CBP official you end up with for your immigration interview determines a lot. Some are sympathetic and some are Trump supporters, so hopefully, you'll go to the queue of a good 'un.

EDIT : Just saw you have a green card, so things should be much easier for you. Either way, I'll try and do the basic stuff mentioned if I Were you

That it has come down to this is absolutely terrible. Feels like a completely different era that we're living in.

@fishfingers15 I'm going to Cali, you think should be easier there?

Even California and NY, the bastions of liberal movement were turning back resources, but I believe avenues of help if things go wrong are made immediately available as opposed to states like Kansas

I'm going to San Francisco for a summer school in August. How much can they legally demand from me in terms of social media passwords etc.?

As far as I'm aware and I have many cases anecdotal information to support this stance, CBP official can say that you have no rights of privacy and demand passwords for all your social sites. I believe the reason for this is they can claim 'reasonable case of suspicion' and that gives them a lot of leverage and legal protection, especially on people who are not born in the US. US citizens have the highest rights to privacy, then comes Green Card holders, then legal immigrants, who have stayed in US, worked legally and paid taxes, then students and then first-time visitors. I also think there have been arguments that the right of privacy doesn't extend to people who haven't set foot inside US even once.

That is depressing. Basic stuff like shave off your beard. Disgusting we have come to this at the hands of this ahole.

I didn't mean to trivialize this issue, so apologies if you felt that way. I also want to emphasize that some of these 'basic' instructions were in practice even when Obama was at the office, but have seen it done more and more nowadays

Never seen such a cringe worthy cabinet meeting. A poor attempt to show Unity in the WH. And who is he kidding with blaming Dems for being obstructionist

I'd prefer to go to Cancun with my family.

You've said nothing wrong. No apologies needed at all.

Suspend all social media accounts before you get on the plane, reactivate them once you're within the country. Delete all apps, clear the browsing history.

It's sad that it's at this stage but when I next fly through the States I'll probably back up my phone, clear it, then restore from the back-up when I arrive at the hotel.

Absolute joke of a country.

This dual DC/Maryland AG press conference is interesting.

They're laying out a strong case that Trump has absolutely violated the emoluments clause.

A joke of an administration.

I'll qualify, because you're across the board nice.

America is truly a joke of a country. Hands down one of the most beautiful countries on earth. Like France, it has a fabulous group of down to earth, good natured & friendly citizens/inhabitants.

However; uncontrolled guns, lack of healthcare, student indebtedness, illness bankruptcies, rates of incarceration, racism, the war machine, levels of corporate corruption, Us vs Them politicking, 2 years of presidential campaigning, attitudes to oil/petrol.... It's the most flawed nation on earth. It's on the wrong size of the bell curve of progress and most pretend it's not. No developed world country would swap it's own policy for Americas on any of those issues. Everyone does them better.

To reiterate the good: It's stunning, the vast majority of people are fabulous. The populace lets both parties pull their pants down. Trump is a temporary figurehead but they're all on the dame boat going in the same direction with the point of difference merely being a blue or red button pin.

You remain a good egg though.

I have a feeling this is a full court press from the IC. They want those tax returns out in the open as it will make their job a lot easier. Two blue states doing all they can to help.

SCOTUS is really going to have to go against the grain to rule in Trump's favor (not saying that won't happen)

This was the 9th Circuit...not too long ago we had the 4th Circuit say the same

Just got an update for that too. I'm looking forward to his incoming Twitter meltdown.

This is interesting.

Guy with major IC connections goes on a 100+ tweet mega-rant, and reveals a lot of fascinating things.

I can't work out whether this is salacious information, or the drunken coked up ravings of a man on the edge...

But, I mean, blue tick, so...

To each his own, but I think an ever growing segment of the population has begun viewing the improvements made in countries rebuilt under the Marshall Plan favorably, meaning eventually we will fix many of our ills.

Sorry, I just have to call you out on this. You think America is the most flawed nation on earth and in the same planet, just of the top of my head I cite you the example of Philliphines (sitting president encouraging and abetting vigilante killings) and Qatar (practise exit visa checks to ensure slave labor in this time and age)?

I have not even tried to list out the real dangers such as Chechnya, Libya, Syria, a bunch of African countries literally engaging in genocide to make it a reasonable comparison between countries that try and be like normal countries.

Of course you are entitled to your own view but not having it.

Reads like a man who has read one too many James Ellroy novels.

I forget the book but a freshly shaved beard was the giveaway for a suicide bomber! Something like Jack Reacher.

Yes :D
I have often thought about that, and I now leave a day's gap. But the most dangerous thing I'm carrying is my laptop, and random passengers are more likely to report/be scared of a beard, not a clean-shaven person.

Appreciate that my language was unclear. My fault.

Think of all nations as a football club, throw them into 5 divisions. Developed world nations at the top (rightly or wrongly). America is in the top tier but also the country that's constantly flirting with relegation. It's broken on so many levels. I can't imagine too many would argue with that.

I thought it would stand to reason that I'd be comparing like with like. Categorically, America is not as flawed on a human level as the countries you mentioned. Sorry if you thought I was suggesting that.

Perhaps. Though I don't think attaching those strides to the Marshall Plan is fair. I dont believe that even 25% of Americans would even know what it was.

I do believe that the best of Americans want America to be better. But I do not believe that even 1% of Americans are interested in making it better. The same would be true of many countries of course. Yet other countries do not seem to tolerate the kinds of errors that the US has made.

I love America as a country. I really do. I have less than a casual eye on the rise of AI/Futurology and believe that it could obliterate much of the unfairness that America seems happy to endure. Imagine JUST the nonsensical costs of healthcare and a college education being wiped out forevermore. Changes the face of the entire country. It needs to happen. It benefits everyone yet Americans must wait on an external unknown to possibly see it happen. It may happen. I suspect not though.

I'm not saying that they know what the Marshall Plan is. I'm saying those are the countries who provide examples for the policies that we are aspiring to.

I also don't share the pessimism that less than 1% of this country wants to fix its problems.

Absolute joke of a country.

I asked my parents to carry their old non-smartphones but that itself might be suspicious. So delete all emails related to Trump.
In the end there was no problem at all, he barely looked at them or the passport. So much depends on the individual officer who looks at you and his moods.

I'm on a sloppy posting session. Amend to : Less than 1% care enough to do anything.

I feel that's fair.

With you now on the post-Marshall aspirations too. Thought you were linking them absolutely.

China is as flawed, probably even more than US. So are Japan, UK, India et al. I don't really get the expectation for US to be perfect. Like any nation it's has its peaks and downs and it'll all even out in long run.

You don't have to apologize, but if you were comparing America against developed countries, I'd say it makes lot more sense. I'd agree mostly but I will probably say China in spite of it's wealth and power are probably the worst when it comes to human rights.
