Keeping the militia wing of his base happy :wenger:

This pardon thing seems pretty crazy to me. How can one person be given the power to completely overrule the entire justice system?

In Norway the king is actually granted the powers of pardon by the constitution, but in reality the power lies with the state. And the reasons for pardons are never as political as this.

This is what dems should be basing their opposition on. They should not be mentioning abortion at all.

Agree 100%. Personally I think Roe v. Wade is a clever feint from the Republicans that a number of Democrats have fallen for like suckers. All Trump cares about is protecting himself and his money. His public backers like the Mercers and his private backers like Roger Stone and the old Roy Cohn crowd only care about a SC Justice that is going to protect Citizen's United and other corporate power grabs. They don't care two fecks about Roe v. Wade. But its a nice camouflage to hide their real intent.

So they let Democrats get all worked up over Roe v. Wade, trick the Democrats into making abortion a big issue, then Kavanaugh simply says he "respects settled law and precedent" and suddenly the Democrat's entire argument is countered.
I fear some of the big Democrats have already fallen for this trap by emphasizing the red herring of abortion instead of what is really dangerous here: making a unitary executive above the law and protecting the corporate interests of Citizens United and other rulings. The Republican strategists are letting the Democrats "have a win" on not overturning Roe v. Wade (which only the most evangelical extremists care about anyway) meanwhile they are stacking the court with corporatists who will rule against the common citizen for decades to come.

Well I doubt most dems care about corporatists being in charge. This country needs a progressive revolution to save it, not more of the same.

Well that's the other part of the wool pulled over the citizen's eyes yea? Establishment Democrats don't care about challenging Citizens United as much as they do about the optics of claiming they "protected Roe v Wade".

Probably because they know Citizens United isn't going anywhere for at least a generation whereas Roe could be overturned within months. But I do get your broader point.

Dems should let them overturn it. It doesn't actually affect that many people but it would galvanise a movement against conservatism. It's like Obamacare. Let the repubs do what they always threaten and have them own the consequences.

Doubt it (Roe vs Wade) will be over turned. Just a lot of noise. If anything this should force the government to start working on law. They (right and left) spend too much time complaining and not doing much. If Republicans put in SCOTUS that literally inteprets the law, then the govenrment should work to change the law. Historically, the right and left have populated the judiciary with activisits, rather then work on the law. The Government should stop being scared of making hard decisions. They do nothing and create noise about things that are unlikely to happen.

It just a dick swinging showpiece now. With Warsaw Pact disabled post cold war, this should have become redundant too. Perhaps Trump pulling out may finally achieve this.

Its the same thing as its always been. Only difference is Russia has replaced the Soviet Union. Same authoritarian, expansionist opponent.

Mostly not political at least. The Treholt pardon springs to mind.

Bit hyperbolic, but recognises that and makes some fair points.

Dodgy as feck. I think Justice Kennedy was allowed pick his replacement as his son has information on money laundering in the trump organisation.

So Kennedy and his son arranged for a billion dollars in loans and kennedys retirement in order to move the court away from the positions held by Kennedy and more towards the positions held trump and other Republicans?

I dont see what Kennedy gets out of this

Isn't Kennedy still quite right-leaning anyway?

Kennedy voted with the right on Bush v Gore, DC v Heller, Citizens United, the recent union cases, and Obamacare.
