The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

Is there a way that this can be stopped?
Typically 60 votes are needed to confirm Supreme Court pick. But, due to the nuclear option, they can confirm the pick with only 51 votes. In which case, Trump just needs all the current Republican senators to vote for Kavanaugh and he gets confirmed.

If all Dem senators do not vote for Kavanaugh and just one Republican senator does not vote for Kavanaugh, he will not get confirmed. But, with the mid terms coming up, Dem senators from Red states will have to think a lot before not voting for the pick as it could back fire in the elections.

In 2016, Obama had a chance to nominate a Supreme Court pick but the GOP (who controlled both houses) blocked the pick and did not even allow a hearing to take place. They claimed that the appointment should not happen as it was an election year (the 2016 presidential election). The Dems are arguing that with an election coming up, GOP should stick to what they said in 201. Fat chance of that happening as it is the GOP we are talking about and they could always argue it only applies to presidential elections.

After writing all that, I realize they don't have much chance to stop it :( Maybe one of the resident US guys can confirm. @Raoul @Carolina Red

So, is Kavanaugh similar to Kennedy in terms of how conservative they are and how they will vote?

Should the Dems allow this pick to go through?

No should about it .Dems will shake their heads and stomp their feet and then vote him in.

How will they do it though? Let's assume none of them vote for Kavanaugh. Even then, GOP still need a simple majority is enough to confirm him right?

There are two Republicans and four Democrats in Red States that could stop the nomination if they felt he was going to overturn the abortion laws. But that is a very big if.

Surely the only thing that matters to Trump here is how this guy would handle the fallout from the Mueller investigation?

That’s why he was nominated...
In 2009, Kavanaugh wrote an article for the Minnesota Law Review where he argued that U.S. Presidents should be exempt from “time-consuming and distracting” lawsuits and investigations, which “would ill serve the public interest, especially in times of financial or national security crisis.”[53]

Also looks like he’s preparing the way for a downgrading of the US commitment to NATO, or maybe even a full pullout.

Kavanaugh needs 50 of the 51 republican senators to vote yes. the tie breaker comes from the Mike Pence who obviously votes with the precident

Something that I find interesting. The US and the EU have a comparable GDP, Germany, France and the UK represent about half of the EU GDP. Now if we look at NATO's contributors, the US contribute to 22% of the civil budget, Germany 14% and France-UK each contribute to about 10.5%. So comparatively, half of the US GDP contributes to more than the US actually do.

McCain is still in the hospital right? If he does not come in to vote, just one Rep no would be enough.

That's just the budget per se, not the respective military expenditures.

Not that I think he has any sort of point... NATO is US-anchored by design, especially in regards to Germany. The US pays the cost for Germany to no longer have geopolitical ambitions of its own.

You see that's the problem here, the US could reduce their military budget, he is trying to convey the idea that the US pay more to NATO when in reality the US pay more to maintain their own industry. Their contribution to NATO is in line with other countries.

some people are going to look at his previous opinions or articles or whatever but not me. i just want to say that this guy is a virgin

I don't know if you ever watched 30 Rock but he looks like a total Lutz.

Exactly. It's easy going on about the 2% rule, but the US doesn't have high military spending for the benefit of Europe. Was Afghanistan for the benefit of Europe? Or Iraq? Do they have carrier groups in the Pacific for the benefit of Europe?

I realize this is just one in a million tweets and absolutely nothing unexpected or new, but still, this was really written by the 72-year old POTUS, arguably the most powerful man in the world. If you replace “NATO countries” and “United States” with something else, like Destiny and Portina, it could just as well have been written by my 12-year old cousin regarding who’s to pay for lunch at school tomorrow.

I can’t make up my mind whether he’s actually as much of a child as these kinds of tweets indicate or if he’s just playing his base of millions of Americans who like this US against the World kind of thing, all while they can scream “USA, USA, USA” at a monster truck rally.

'Destiny and Portina'? Are they yachts?

Despicable. Thats why Hillary would have been the responsible choice. The majority have lost two SC picks due to their weakness in campaigning and the ridiculous protest vote/no vote made by the people who profess to want a better and equal country for everyone.
Maybe if we talked more about trumps relationship with Kennedy's son at Deutsche bank instead of twisting our knickers over Hillary's personal emails we could have avoided this shitshow.
