Saw my first Irish bloke in a MAGA cap today. Young fella. Must have been late teens/early 20s. The little gobshite. Is this a thing in other, non-American, countries too?
The guy who's running our super computer at work wore one of them at the department Christmas do right after Trump was elected. He's usually a bit of an annoying twat so I have a feeling he wasn't taking the piss.

Commiserations.

The absolute state of the world day. Someone like Trump getting fans from foreign countries.

My Dad is also a Trump supporter, albeit not as enthusiastic as the brother-in-law. Weirdly enough, you couldn't think of two people more different than them two.

He seems to have become a bit of a totem to rally round for people who are unhappy with the establishment. Almost irrespective of whether or not he’s aligned with their personal politics (also irrespective of him being such an obviously desipicable charlatan)

I turned down projects in Raleigh and Charlotte. J

I don't think either would have been a problem. Where I stay (Durham) is close to Raleigh and inside the city hasn't been a problem (wrt racism at least). Go outside 10 mins and you reach all the pickup trucks with Confederate flags...

Now I wouldn't like being stuck in a city as I love the countryside and wildlife.

Are you David Horowitz's son?

To a certain degree - a hell of a lot of people from that generation followed a similar path in varying degrees. They're the crowd who gave us neoconservatism.

Funny you should mention him though, when I visited my Dad last year I noticed a copy of Horowitz's Trump book on the coffee table.

I work with a guy that has a MAGA cap and frequents r/the_Donald. He'd be a GamerGater type too which I presume is fairly common. To be fair to him I suspect he's just wumming for the most part although he did also voted to leave in the Brexit referendum.

Not seen one here in the UK and I'm in peak Brexit territory. If I did see one I'd be tempted to have a word were you?

Wait are you saying you've seen people wearing them MAGA hats in the UK/Europe?

Sounds like Canada!

Depends. I moved in Vanouver more than 2 years ago and we bearly go below -2/-3 Celsius. And summers are 25/30 during 5 months. I love Canada so far: very civil, diverse and if you like outdoors, specially countains, one of the best places in the world and if you have good work ethics and you have minimum studies (of any kind) you can climb the ladder quite fast

This is at the Dublin embassy earlier today:

That weather sounds amazing, here in Ontario the winters are longer and the summers are shorter but I love here all the same.
As you said, it is civil, diverse and the people are warm and friendly.

My experience living in the US was much different.

I thought I was sufficiently prepared.

I wasn’t.

I sometimes feel like I stepped into a weird parallel universe that at first looks the same as the one I know but then the culture is so alien to me I stepped into the Twilight Zone

What the feck did I just read?
Please can you explain it?
From the Southern Poverty Law Center...
Kek, in the alt-right’s telling, is the “deity” of the semi-ironic “religion” the white nationalist movement has created for itself online – partly for amusement, as a way to troll liberals and self-righteous conservatives both, and to make a kind of political point. He is a god of chaos and darkness, with the head of a frog, the source of their memetic “magic,” to whom the alt-right and Donald Trump owe their success, according to their own explanations.

In many ways, Kek is the apotheosis of the bizarre alternative reality of the alt-right: at once absurdly juvenile, transgressive, and racist, as well as reflecting a deeper, pseudo-intellectual purpose that lends it an appeal to young ideologues who fancy themselves deep thinkers. It dwells in that murky area they often occupy, between satire, irony, mockery, and serious ideology; Kek can be both a big joke to pull on liberals and a reflection of the alt-right’s own self-image as serious agents of chaos in modern society.

Thanks, that was a lot clearer. I'm probably a bit slow but I'm only starting to realize that the Alt right is basically made of morons, that are taken seriously enough that they became ideologically dangerous.

Yep. That’s the danger of democratically electing a government.

Convince enough morons to believe in a bullshit idea and you can get elected.

Guess Trump does really prefer Kim to his wife

What a bunch of absolute cnuts. Depresses me to think I might walk among them without knowing it. There should be a law obliging them to have the MAGA hats surgically stapled to their heads.

Also running with the freetommy hashtags I see.
