Its the closest thing to the US in terms of lifestyle, without the gun and fewer people around.

Except for, you know, Canada.

"The closest thing to the US in terms of lifestyle" and here we have Canada, that is largely indistinguishable from the wealthier parts of the USA. People sound the same, the culture is almost identical.

Imagine a Canadian or American saying that about British and Irish people (it's happened).

I've lived in Vancouver and been in the Bay Area plenty of times and wouldn't agree with that at all. Canadians and Americans are very different.

I'm a dual citizen. I have American and Canadian citizenship. I'm from BC. The BC accent is indistinguishable to most people from the generic PNW accent. I can tell them apart, but I've lived with both of them for about 20 years each. The midwestern US accent, is almost indistinguishable from your typical W Ontario/Manitoba/Saskatchewan accent. Again, unless you live there, you're going to struggle to pick them apart.

The culture is almost identical. Sure there are a few differences, but the differences are nothing like the differences between Australians and Americans, who have almost a completely different dialect of English.

If you drive across the border from Bellingham to White Rock, guess what. If there was no border, and Americans used metric for their road signs, you wouldn't be able to tell that you were in a different country.

Another day, another stupid reversal

This isn't going to go the way they think it will go. Top schools are going to filled with 90% East and South Asian kids. Even Harvard was caught cheating in their admission process to have fewer kids of Asian origin.

Have they ever been inside a Math olympiad or spelling bee?

Move to Norway mate. Long winters but great quality living in general.

The only place I could possibly see myself moving to in the near to mid future is Canada.

It has nothing to do with language, culture, etc. (I’d love to live in France above anywhere else.)

It has everything to do with... I’ve got elderly grandparents that I help take care of, and I’m fairly certain that my mom is going to be diagnosed with dementia/Alzheimer’s one day. I can’t just abandon them and move to a different hemisphere.

That’s why they are being sued. They are actively discriminating against Asian students for overachieving by deducting points in the personality category in order to reduce their Asian admissions in favor of blacks, whites, and hispanics. That’s overtly racist towards a minority group and Harvard should pay a massive penalty if the court case goes through.

Many of us claim we are, but it's largely untrue. Most Canadians just don't want to admit it.

We grew up with the same TV shows, music, books and film. It has a big impact.

Hmm, fair then.

To be fair our generation in Ireland have largely grown up watching American TV and it definitely shows here too.

25-30 years ago that would've been more the case but the cultural differences have been gradually dissipating over the past 2-3 decades with the availability of satellite TV and streaming services. I have friends in Toronto who never watch Canadian TV and instead get all their news from CNN and their entertainment from Netflix and other US channels.

I'm basically a Detroiter @Raoul because we got their local ABC/CBS/NBC stations when I was growing up.

Interesting. I would've thought the GTA area would've picked up the Buffalo stations. A lot of Toronto people in the 80s and 90s followed the Bills as well.

Oh right. That would make sense then.

To be fair, Minnesota would've made more sense. We'd at least have the weather in common. Detroit was like a whole 'nother universe.

Before I realized they used fahrenheit I though it was really hot there. 50 degree overnight lows were mind blowing to 7 year old me.

I’m now really interested in what that was though.
A Nigerian House Representative. He's known for using grammer that nobody understands. Once tried to check the words he uses. They're actually in the dictionary. The guy laughing at the end is the vice president.
