When I was a kid I asked my father why politicians in South Asia were so corrupt , like every single one of them had their hands in the honey pot. My father told me that most politicians and people in power were corrupt regardless of where in the world they were, it's just that western politicians weren't so greedy that they took more than they could eat and that they weren't so blatant about it. How times have changed.
I remember a chinese political expert state that the difference between chinese and westerner was that chinese were aware of the fact that politicians are rotten while in the west we are still pretending that it's only a minority.

Exactly, we've created a legal system of bribery, to normalize our corruption. Chinese and Russian politicians etc, are more honest about their corruption and bribes

It is, it was a clear dig at Trump. Our president is very cult and intelligent, and also a bit of a populist, he clearly wanted to mock Trump as he knows that would be very well received here. Did you see the handshake when they first met? He went out of his way to surpass Macron.
