I hope its pirro. Then at least people can stop pretending the court is worthy of respect

We can only hope for such an absurd nominee. Maybe that would galvanize our side and increase voter turnout in November.

I had daily interaction for two years with Bob Jones University students and graduates in a job that I had in South Carolina, they are a different breed.

@Carolina Red could attest to that.
Sweet mother of God. If he starts appointing BJ-U grads into the government then we are headed straight for Puritanical theocracy.

This guy does a good job hitting the highlights (or lowlights) of the BJ-U handbook...

someone needs to explain to me why this Kennedy retiring is so massive for the republicans......

I'm lost to it's importance.

Kennedy's vote has been pivotal in various cases including gay marriage and abortion rights. He's a conservative but has voted not-so-conservative on cases pre-Trump. Now he's decided to retire while Trump is President, Trump can appoint a Republican whose political values are further to the right, and 40 years younger.

You can split it into two main reasons and both mean Democrats are potentially fecked.

1. A more conservative SCOTUS for a generation:
Because the Senate stalled on Obama's Supreme Court pick Trump was able to install a conservative justice (Gorsuch) in place of a moderately liberal one (Garland). This kept the court on the right and on many social issues Kennedy remained the potential swing vote in 5-4 decisions. Kennedy is conservative in economic decisions but often sympathetic to liberal arguments on social ones.

With his retirement instead of having a vaguely conservative 81 year old judge the GOP can now install a ~50 year old very conservative one. This skews the Supreme Court more to the right for the next 20 - 30 years with probably Roberts (to the right of Kennedy) being the new swing vote in tight decisions. This could have serious ramifications for stuff like gay/minority/immigrant/worker's rights, women's rights like abortion law etc and could feasibly threaten past judgments made of a liberal bent. Future Democratic administrations might be hamstrung by a partisan court interpreting their intended policies as unconstitutional while Republican ones might get a pass they otherwise wouldn't. Methods of voter suppression and increased gerrymandering are areas the GOP could gain an electoral advantage in almost immediately.

If you add to all that the fact that Ginsberg (A liberal judge) is already 85 years old then it's feasible Trump ends his first term with a 6 - 3 supreme court majority full of young conservative judges all having a lifelong term. The next oldest justice on the court is Breyer (79) - another Liberal leaning judge.

2. Republican voters get energised at the prospect of winning SCOTUS picks.

Due to the Supreme Court's importance for saving future generations from the horrors of Liberalism and Communism the prospect of securing a SCOTUS pick invigorates the GOP base in a way that it doesn't seem to for Democrats. This leaves Democrats with a problem. If they seek to stall Trump's pick till after the midterms (they probably don't have the power) then it becomes a campaign issue on something known to invigorate their opponents. Dems are already walking a tightrope because this time out most seats up for grabs are in Republican leaning areas. Nontheless Dems have been polling pretty well and it has been hoped that Republican leaning turnout would be depressed due to Trump being a complete wanker. Moderate republicans might get off their arses for this wanker if it secures them a SCOTUS pick.

If that happens then Trump and the GOP could solidify their control of congress even further.

I love the level of detail in those rules, not to mention the extensive cloak and dagger surveillance that must have gone on beforehand.

All in all, don't worry. After the next Civil War, you could always move into one of the UN-protected areas on the west coast or the northeast until things cool down a bit.

Hmm..

"Any music which, in whole or in part, derives from the following broadly defined genres or their sub-genres: Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz, Electronic/ Techno, Rap/Hip Hop or the fusion of any of these genres is banned even if it is Christian. [page 29]"

I'm not sure what that really leaves. Hymns?

I'm sure Wagner would still go down well there

The red cafe profits of doom are out in force. All the Dems need if they stick together is just one Republican vote to block Trumps nominee.

It's the 'if they stick together' part that isn't necessarily that easy. Three Dem Senators from Trump states voted to approve Gorsuch, and there's nothing to suggest they wouldn't approve the next one either.

They need 2

Also fat chance Joe Manchin blocks this vote. The only hope I can see them having is coaxing Flake and Corker to become dems and make Schumer the majority leader. Fat chance of that happening aswel
