A New Study Says Nearly 6,000 Died In Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria. The Government Still Says 64 People Died.
“Our results indicate that the official death count of 64 is a substantial underestimate of the true burden of mortality after Hurricane Maria.”

The number of people who died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria was at least 70 times higher than the official death toll, according to a study published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study estimates that 5,740 people died as a result of the storm, rather than the 64 people counted in the Puerto Rican government’s official death toll, which was last updated on Dec. 4. The government’s count came under suspicion first by the Puerto Rico Center for Investigative Reporting and BuzzFeed News just days after the hurricane devastated the island.

“Our results indicate that the official death count of 64 is a substantial underestimate of the true burden of mortality after Hurricane Maria,” the researchers wrote, adding that their findings support press reports saying as much.

The researchers from Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health worked with graduate students at the Carlos Albizu University and Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico, and others in Colorado and Boston, to conduct a survey of 3,299 randomly selected households in Puerto Rico — about 9,522 people.

They asked about all deaths and their causes between Sept. 20, when Hurricane Maria made landfall, and Dec. 31 of 2017.

Comparing those results with previous years’ death records, they calculated that 4,645 more people died in the final months of 2017, after the hurricane, compared with the same period the year prior — representing a 62% increase in the mortality rate after Maria.

I think it's worth linking this to some of the immigration policies - specifically children being ripped apart from their parents and put into cages, and some of them "disappearing." The link is that both are utterly awful acts on a huge scale that would probably make any US citizen angry if it happened to people they knew. But PR is a faraway island, its people largely don't speak English. Refugees are a zombie-like menace who are either rapists or destroyers of the economy. People in Puerto Rico are citizens, migrants are not - but they are hysicaly and mentally distant enough that both the government and (many of) the people treat them as non-people.
I think this also links with Trump's "animals". It's no coincidence that he used the word to refer to MS-13 rather than any US-based criminals. In fact that is the most charitable view. If you combine that remark with the "Mexians are rapists" that started the campaign, and "migrant children aren't innocent" which he said just after "animals", I think it's fair to say that MS-13 form part of a larger Mexican subhuman horde for him.

Good for her. My parents tell me they don't watch him anymore as well

If you think about it, him doing rallies for Republican candidates is probably the best thing he’s been doing this whole Presidency.

Yep. He's only comfortable around crowds that chant his name in support of anything he says. He's only had one press conference since he took office if im correct.

fecking hell.

My girlfriend has this weirdo on Facebook she went to school with who is always posting loads of shit car memes and weird statuses. He recently posted one saying something like "Really sorry to my wife, realise I've got to do more with my life than just smoke weed, take photos at car shows and take photos of girls posing on cars. Time to get back on track and do what matters".

This tweet by Trump is giving me haunting echos of that absolutely tragic Facebook status. It's clear as day that someone has told him he needs to sort it out and his response is a halfhearted apology followed by one big super-dooper summing up accusation.

He just fecking realized it..."

Again with the fecking projection.

See this:

It’s not something she will have chosen but it’s what Trump and his team do and it’s what the Republicans and their media vendors do.

They pick an offence they know they are one of the worst offenders of and they own the higher ground on it. Fake news, gerrymandering, collusion, election rigging, you name it. A good way to gauge what Trump is guilty of is what he projects on to others.

Here he is once again, accusing the opposition of exactly what the Trump Campaign was guilty of.

"The Fake Mainstream Media has, from the time I announced I was running for President, run the most highly sophisticated & dishonest Disinformation Campaign in the history of politics."

Translates to...

"The Fake Mainstream Media has uncovered that, at the time I was running for President, I ran the most highly sophisticated & dishonest Disinformation Campaign in the history of politics."

This is like when Damien Hirst smears the word “fun” in his own shit on a lamp post for no reason, and then his supporters say “oh it’s an allegory to our ever changing perspective on the money farmers get for milk from supermarkets”, then Hirst just nods and says “uh, yeah that’s totally what I meant. How deep am I.”

So apparently, Trump is sitting down with Kim Kardashian next week to discuss reforms to the US justice system.
I'm on it.
*dashes off*

To some of those that attend his rallies, it's like going to a WWE show, they can shout catch phrases ,boo the bad girl or guy and hold up silly placards.

Not come across that comparison before but it's pretty apt, I think.
I could see it too. Been to one live WWE event. Was so horrified I'm never going again. It was so trashy of a crowd I seriously feared for the future of this country. Years later those fears ended up being proven right.

I hate to use the word after Hillary did but I can think of no better term to use for that crowd than deplorable.

Had similar feelings at a bull riding event in Las Vegas. If I watch it again it'll be on the telly.

Was that his luke warm take on Rosanne getting the chop? You know he wanted to say more, but obviously someone's told him to mind what he says on it. Bellend...

Reading about these burner accounts, I realized surely Trump has a bunch of them?
