Key point:

"If he gave the command, his executing commanders would have no legal or procedural grounds to defy it no matter how inappropriate it might seem. As long as the president can establish his or her true identity by his or her personal presence in the Pentagon’s nuclear war room or its alternates (places like Site R at Fort Richie near Camp David), or by phone or other means of communications linking him or her to these war rooms using a special identification card (colloquially known as “the biscuit” containing “the nuclear codes”) in his or her possession (or, alternatively, kept inside the “nuclear briefcase” carried by his or her military aide who shadows the president everywhere he or she works, travels and plays), a presidential nuclear decision is lawful (putting international humanitarian law aside). It must be obeyed as long as it is constitutional—i.e., the president as commander in chief believes he or she is acting to protect and defend the nation against an actual or imminent attack.

But within these broad constraints there is no wiggle room for evasion or defiance of the president’s orders. That’s true even if the national security adviser, the secretary of defense (who along with the president makes up the “national command authority”) and other top appointees and advisers disagree with the president’s decision. It does not matter whether the United States has already come under attack by nuclear or non-nuclear weapons. It does not even matter if the commander in chief simply orders the use of nuclear weapons on an ordinary day for reasons unknown to all but him or her. Under the president’s open-ended mandate to decide when the national interest is threatened, ordering up a nuclear strike is his or her prerogative, and obeying the order is incumbent upon the military servants of civilian authority."

If Trump made a mental decision and demanded nuclear warfare, I genuinely believe there would be a coup. Despite what anyone says, Nuclear weapons exist only as protection. The only single scenario they would ever be used is if a threat was absolutely certain to be imminent.

As such Nuclear force would never be an option against a non-Nuclear nation. If it was used against a Nuclear nation, they would have to be damn certain that they could 100% protect themselves from any form of retaliation otherwise it is definitely not in the interest of the United States.

Not sure which of those in power get consulted in a "wake up, the Russians are attacking, do we press the button?" type scenario. Posted an article on it before the election, it's pretty much just down to the President.
In the event of an Early warning system alert, usually, the national security advisor is contacted by Norad (or through the JCS). Then it is his decision to wake up the president. This is how it has worked out in the past, during the incidents where a Russian missile attack has been erroneously reported. And that has been an alarmingly more frequent occurrence than one would expect. Also, I presume that if the inbound missiles are confirmed by the ground radars, the president will be raised no matter what or who thinks otherwise.

The main fear about Trump and nuclear armageddon isn't about the specifics of what happens in the minutes/hours before he pulls the trigger. It's about months/years of terrible decisions that destabilises the whole world to an extent where global armed conflict is inevitable. Once we reach that point the finer details of nuclear launches kind of no longer matter.

With that, we can see it coming, at least. His popularity may well decline a tad if he's gradually heading towards nuclear war. If it drops low enough a way will be found to remove him.

You're right that we're in a large part discussing the last yard of a play that needs to drive 99 yrds (I thought of a football analogy, but not the same). But there's also reason to worry that even when that far a calmer person would still be able to back down (but you could argue a calmer person wouldn't have gone that far).

My concern would be what happens when Putin slyly slides into another country. You just know he's planning it.

Fortunately there are enough Senators from both parties who would fly off the handle and put a lot of pressure on Drumpf. McCain and Graham being the primary ring leaders. Combine that with residual anger at the Russian intervention in the elections and you may actually see the Donald respond to Vlad.

I actually expect that he may be declared unfit for duty in the event of an attack on an ally that he refuses to react to.

Yeah, I think there's a decent chance that the 25 amendment's section 4 becomes a genuine issue at some point.

Wait, that's satire right?
Nope. It's legit.

I've been reading the testimonials on and off  They've gone to Texas and NY.

Whiteness Project is an interactive investigation into how Americans who identify as white, or partially white, understand and experience their race.

Whiteness Project is conducting interviews with people from all walks of life and localities in which they are asked about their relationship to, and their understanding of, their own whiteness. Each video interview is paired with a statistic that provides a greater societal context and offers an opportunity for self-reflection by the audience on their own thoughts about race.

Whiteness Project’s first installment, Inside the White/Caucasian Box, is a collection of 21 interviews filmed in Buffalo, NY in July 2014 and released in October 2014. The latest installment,Intersection of I, is a collection of 23 interviews filmed in Dallas, Texas in July 2015 and released in April 2016. This second installment features a cross-section of Millennials, ages 15-27, who share their views about race and identity. The project is ongoing and we are in production on additional installments.

By engendering debate about the role of whiteness in American society and encouraging white Americans to become fully vested participants in the ongoing debate about the role of race in American society, Whiteness Project aims to inspire reflection and foster discussions that ultimately lead to improved communication around issues of race and identity.

Some of the quotes

"Stop talking about racism. Just stop." Leilani, 17
"The advantages of being white outweigh the disadvantages." Sadie, 15
"I feel more comfortable around people of my own race." Bryan, 21 :nervous:
"Because slavery happened, does that mean we owe black people something?" Jason

I'm sure some context is lost, but still.

You can click on their quotes and listen to their little spiel. So, you get context!

Gen. Kelly to head Homeland Security.

For a guy who thought he knew more than our best military minds...that's the 3rd military appointment.

I think Gen. Kelly is a good pick - he'll be tough but unlike bastard politicians, he'll make decisions for the right reasons.

 will he feck he is an extreme hawk and doesnt even contain his hatred for the latinos

Imagine the outrage if a Democrat had said this

Well if you look at it from a purely neutral standpoint they successfully pulled off a series of stunning attacks using some of the best military technology around at the time. But yeah a bunch of people would go ape shit if Hillary or Biden or someone like that had said this.

Though technically the attacks in the Philippines were launched on Dec 8th I believe.

Unbelievable he really is. Just like this sickening tour of smoke blowing he's going on at the moment. He just loves the spotlight and will do anything just to have people praise him. Never have I ever wanted someone to fail and fall from grace so badly in my entire life. He is literally the most pathetic human on the planet. Obviously there are worse people, but nobody as pathetic.

Is still an awful thing to say when you're countrymen were slaughtered
