I'm very skeptical if this is anything more than insulation for 2018. After all, all of this noble musings didnt stop him from voting for the 'skinny repeal'.
It's a good thing, but if political expediency is the only thing that prompted him to do it, it might be expedient for him to back Trump again in the future.
He spoke about that earlier today. He's really not commenting much on Trump and is rather taking a much longer-term view on things. On healthcare, he's very firm in his view that Obamacare currently is having a real negative impact on his constituents - he wasn't supporting Trump or the GOP in some political posturing, he just has a view grounded in evidence that there is a better way. Across the board there's agreement that the cost of deductibles is a huge problem and he's one of the ones that can see it pricing some of his constituents out of healthcare and thinks they need to go back to the beginning to fix that. Seems reasonable to me.
