The Trump Presidency | Biden Inaugurated

If you're wondering, and you should, why conservative value-based voters made a deal with the devil by supporting this guy this article is a very good summary of it.

Like Esau, who exchanged his inheritance for a pot of stew, white evangelicals have traded their distinctive values for fleeting political power. Twenty years from now, there is little chance that 2016 will be celebrated as the revival of White Christian America, no matter how many Christian right leaders are installed in positions of power over the next four years. Rather, this election will mostly likely be remembered as the one in which white evangelicals traded away their integrity and influence in a gambit to resurrect their past.

I think that's my cap on linking articles from The Atlantic for a while...

Thought this was interesting...

The first thing to note is that most voters pay little attention. Those who follow politics tend to assume that everyone else does, too, but they are mistaken. According to the American National Election Study (ANES), a large survey run by Stanford and the University of Michigan and published in March, 94% of Trump voters did not attend a single political rally, speech or meeting last year. The figure for Clinton voters is 90%.

For the rest, political issues are little more than “a sideshow in the great circus of life”, wrote Robert Dahl, a political scientist, in 1961. That remains true. Americans do not trust government much and expect politicians to lie; 31% of Trump voters and 36% of Clinton voters think that the American government “probably” or “definitely” knew about 9/11 in advance.

Each presidential-election year the ANES asks voters to place themselves on a spectrum with “many more services” on the left to “reduce spending a lot” on the right, and then to place the two main political parties somewhere on that spectrum. About 15% decline, or say they have not thought about it. The same number, more or less, will place themselves but cannot place the parties, meaning that 30% of the electorate does not have a good sense of where Republicans and Democrats stand on the most fundamental question about the role of the state.

Yet according to an analysis by Mssrs Achen and Bartels of a study in which the same voters were re-interviewed year after year, about half of men who were anti-abortion and voted Democrat in 1982 had become pro-choice Democrats 15 years later, changing their position to align it with their party’s thinking. A more recent flip comes from white evangelical voters, who supported candidate Trump by the same margin by which they supported George W. Bush, himself a white evangelical (see article).

This kind of groupthink is so powerful that it shapes the way people see the world around them. Right after the election, and more than two months before Mr Trump took office, Republicans told pollsters that their personal finances were in much better shape than they had been the week before the ballot. Democrats said the opposite. The question had nothing to do with politics, and yet the answers given were somehow conditioned by the election. To understand how this can happen, compare and contrast two congressional districts: the one that is heading Republican fastest, and its Democratic counterpart. Conveniently, they are less than 200 miles apart.

Definitely something wrong with him. Looked like he completely blanked out at the Netanyahu meeting as well.

His whole family should be ashamed of themselves for letting him run for the presidency when they knew he wasn't healthy and in a good sound of mind.

CNN have found out the identity of the bigoted idiot who made the wrestling video that Trump tweeted.

Turns out the scumbag isn't some teenage brat as is typically the case with these trolls, but a 37 year old.

The alt right are not happy that CNN have managed to identity this troll. They're claiming all sorts of nonsense like CNN have blackmailed him and saying he's a 15 year old.

Bizarre apology.

This part was funny reading. Its the classic example of "I cant be racist as my best mate is black".

When asked specifically about his other posts that consisted of racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic language and imagery, he answered, "I love people of all races, creeds and origins. One of my best friends is a homosexual and one of my best friends is Jewish and one of my best friends is Muslim."

Didn't they threaten him though? It's a massive story on Reddit at the moment. Apparently CNN threatened to reveal his identity unless he issued an apology, basically blackmailing the guy into apologising.

Its lies being spread by the alt right. The guy apologised first on Reddit before CNN got in touch with him. Once CNN talked to him, he apologised again.

The reason its getting a lot of attention on Reddit is because The Donald users are brigading other subreddit threads such as the below link to manufacture outrage.

What am I missing here...

The guy who made the video is a troll and a bigot, Or just some guy who is a trump fan?

Surely if someone made a video with Trump as the butt of the joke he would be considered a good guy?

Which is exactly why it shouldn't be believed and should be checked first. It's blatant lies and propaganda being spread by the alt-right and Trump supporters who are butt hurt because the guy who created the GIF apologised to CNN instead of doubling down and owning it like their idol Trumpy wumpy would.

So this happened:

...when NPR were tweeting out the Declaration of Independence...

Its both. When the video was posted by Trump, the media started digging into his posts on Reddit and he has posted various bigoted and racist remarks on The Donald subreddit.

oh, that’s not good

I hadn’t really followed the story

Apart from it being incredibly embarrassing that the POTUS posted the video I really didn’t see much harm in the video itself. I felt CNN were overeating

The video itself was pretty harmless, however the problem came when Sarah Huckabee-Sanders stood up and said that Trump had NEVER condoned or incited violence, which is a blatant lie. It also wasn't helped by the fact numerous CNN workers received threatening messages. Trump's all out war against the media, and CNN in particular, is turning very, very nasty and some truly abhorrent thugs are saying and threatening some outrageous things via all forms of communication. It really is going to end up with someone, most probably a journalist, getting seriously hurt, if not worse. If and when that happens, then blame will lie squarely at the doorstep of the White House. Not that they will admit fault or give a shit.

The video itself may not be that awful, but you need to look at it in the bigger picture. Trump's behaviour and rhetoric towards the media has propelled his base to spout their abuse towards the media where it is at dangerous levels. The amount of death threats will be currently at record levels.

What's to stop one of his nutcase supporters who thinks it would be fine to go and shoot a CNN reporter because he thinks CNN are the enemy?

Another thing worth mentioning is how Trump and his supporters would react if this was CNN or a journalist who posted that gif, but used their logo on someone's head and they were beating Trump up. I can guarantee you they wouldn't say the video was harmless and they would be foaming at the mouth.

It's not lies being spread by the 'alt-right'. Read CNN's statement again:

CNN said:
CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

That closing sentence is as chilling a line as you're likely to read on the internet. "Behave in a manner that we deem appropriate or suffer the consequences."

News corporations now (or 'mainstream media', if you will) are Orwellian police entities, more focused on censorship and shaping narratives to suit their agendas, and not reporters of news, it seems.

Though i will add. Why shouldn't CNN reserve the right to expose this idiot if he were to do something that CNN beloved could harm their employees?

CNN originally said that the Trump tweet of this gif was encouraging violence against journalists.

Also

Does this fecking idiot really want to start WWIII? Because it sure as shit sounds like it. He insulted China yesterday and basically said that North Korea wasn't his problem, and now he's saying this. The guy is deranged, a fecking lunatic.

Hmmm... I'm skeptical. There's much more transparent ways of wording those intentions rather than how they actually closed the statement. Seems to me that they're reacting to the widespread, and just, negative reaction they're receiving among internet users from all ends of the spectrum.

The internet is supposed to be a bastion of freedom and anonymity, if the user so wishes. What CNN are doing, ultimately, is attempting to coerce users into behaviour they deem appropriate. That is censorship in any definition of the word.

@Brwned

Good post. Another interesting thing is that non-voters skew to the left, not just on party politics but on issues like healthcare, etc. Educating and organising American voters (for both sides, but particularly for people like Sanders and more left than that) is almost impossibly difficult but the rewards are infinite.

I don't usually drink as soon as I wake up, but after reading those responses...
It's beautiful in some way though. It's basically the Trumpsters admitting what the founding fathers warned against is applicable to their Messiah. Sadly they're too thick to realise this.
