Its true. There is a select section of society that thinks very highly of him. The term professor was used a lot -- even though for the life of me, I cant think of the school he used to teach. Maybe some community college.

Just caught up with all that reading. Cheers @langster and co. He's toast, there is just so many prongs of attack now. I can't wait to read the articles in two or three years time about how Trump and Sessions are struggling with life in jail and can not believe the living standards they are having to deal with.
Don't hold your breath waiting for that, the Presidential pardon is the dark shadow hanging over all of this. It's never been tested whether a President can actually pardon himself (and the wording is far from clear on the matter).

Even if he tried to pardon himself and the Supreme Court ruled against it, he can and almost certainly would be pardoned by Pence anyway. The chance of the Republicans letting a Republican president go to jail is vanishingly small.
I'm expecting some small fry to end up in jail, and the major players get pardoned.
Short of a video emerging of Trump literally talking in Russian on the phone to his handlers in Moscow, there's no chance the Republicans let him go to jail. Even then I wouldn't be sure.
I disagree for a few reasons.
1. Trump could be found guilty of treason amongst many other serious crimes. This is way bigger and way more serious than Nixon. There is so much suspicion and paranoia at the minute that pardoning Trump would probably be viewed as a similar sort of act to Trump attempting to protect Flynn from justice. If Trump is found guilty and they are to cleanse the government of all Russian suspicions, they are going to have to bite the bullet and let Trump fall on his own sword.
2. Trump is still viewed by some of the GOP as a democrat taking advantage of the Republican party and in turn they are taking advantage of him by using him as a fall guy for their fascist agendas. They will have no trouble flipping the narrative and letting him take the heat to clear the Republican party of links to the whole Russian scenario.
3. This is the biggest reason for me... They will want to shut him the hell up. A pardoned Trump is going to go on a world tour, screaming conspiracy theories and inciting rage and riots. He's going to do his best to flip his support away from a Republican party that he will feel no loyalty to and will feel turned on him. He will create a frenzy. It'll be in everyone's best interests that he is in a prison cell with very limited access to the media.

What's the cost benefit analysis of Pence pardoning Trump. I think @Pexbo does a good job of considering this. The political fallout of pardoning him could be too great. It would be the 2nd time in modern history a GOP VP has pardoned his predecessor.
Knowing the current GOP house/Senate, if he is booted they'd actually start calling him a Democrat president they never sided with.

Collusion with the Russians - I don't see how he doesn't go to jail.
Perverting the course of justice - They're already making excuses for him, he's new to this, it's a witch hunt etc. How his base reacts will be important too, if they stick with him the Reps can't risk alienating them by sticking Trump in jail.

Consider how this plays in 2018/2020 (whenever this comes to a head) if he's pardoned. That's a campaign gift wrapped for the Democrats.
As soon as it looks like he's going down imminently, Trump will at the very least pardon Ivanka and Jared.

What's to stop a President on the verge of being impeached pardoning everyone in the US for all crimes they've ever been convicted of, in one last FU? Imagine the chaos as the jail doors open!

Congress can overturn a pardon apparently, but it requires 2/3 I believe. Unlikely for individual pardons, but easy for something insane.
Trump won't fall on his sword though. They basically have a choice (if the impeachment becomes inevitable) between him resigning with the promise of a pardon, or the optics of a Republican president (and god knows how many other senior Republicans) being dragged through congress and the courts in a process that would go on for many months, with all their secrets laid bare. Possibly just in time for the 2018 midterms. That's the horror scenario for the Republicans, they could face annihilation at the polls despite their gerrymandering.
Compared to that, a backroom deal where Trump pardons the major players and then resigns, being pardoned afterwards by his successor might seem like the least damaging scenario. They'd definitely also insist on a complete silence from him, which laughable as it might seem would probably be acceptable to him if the alternative was jail time.

I just checked, you're quite right. It was apparently Mondale who tried to introduce a constitutional amendment that would have allowed 2/3 of both houses of congress to overturn a pardon, but it never passed. So yeah, if he wanted to mass pardon everyone convicted of federal crimes, there seems to be no way to stop him.
It's not. Neither Congress nor SCOTUS can stop a presidential pardon.
Would make a good plot for a horror movie. Or as it's now known, real life.

There's no way Trump will be jailed. Impeachment looks unlikely as well. I think folks consuming the news from certain Twitter accounts, media outlets like CNN, NYT, WaPo etc are experiencing the same "echo chamber" effect they did during the elections (when it was just a matter of how big a win Hillary could pull off).
