Whos role will Xavi play?

In the spirit of the draft, probably a mistake.

I knew Bonini was a hard-working central midfielder but I succumbed to the temptation.

A 12th pick to fix it.

:lol: Fair enough. Very good decision to swap him out even after you picked him, props for that.

The problem with choosing a purely defensive sweeper (as opposed to an attack-minded sweeper, like Backenbauer or Sammer which can be loosely replicated with modern defensive midfielders) is either the absence of qualified candidates or the preponderance of them. Few teams play with a true sweeper anymore, and usually only as part of a three-man defense. But on the other hand, as has been written about in too many places to cite any one of them, all center-backs today play to an extent as sweepers, with one dropping to provide cover as the other moves forward to engage the ball.

Ricardo Carvalho, however, fits the characteristics we’re looking for — he’s got passing skills and is intelligent in his positioning — and played as a ball playing defender with Terry in a counter attacking team, in one of the best defenses of modern time.

I found Torrente the hardest position to replicate, mostly because it feels almost natural to interpret this position as a defensive winger, someone who supports the creative talent by his constant running and defenisve work. However this is not at all how Inter used Jair, his biggest duty was to stretch the play on the right side but at the same time he was very much used to cut inside and was one of the most important goal threat for his team. He did drop deep because his dribbling style required him to create space between himself and the defender to build momentum so he could pass his marker on the run. However from watching the matches its clear that he is no midfield work horse, Jair was a proper right wing forward (backup to Garrincha in 1962 WC winning squad), while he had work rate he was not a great defender. His defining characteristics were speed, dribbling, creativity and shooting.

So we’ll be looking for a player who can play as a right winger/forward, while still tracking back somewhat. There are obvious candidates — a certain 3 lung player appear in the dictionary next to “hard-working midfielder” — but they lack the creativity and dribbling ability Jair brought to those Inter teams. In Di Maria we’re going to opt for someone with a far more creativity, who has something to offer other than just his running and flexibility to play multiple positions. He’s not what you’d call a work horse, but he’s more than capable of stretching the play on the right side or coming inside when needed.

I personally think Xavi is a better fit for the Platini role than Kaka in terms of his actual attributes. Positionally he was obviously more restricted and he's never going to get the same number of goals, but Xavi is probably the only player in the draft with the passing ability and requisite footballing intelligence for the role. It would be more of case of arguing that he has the technical qualities/attributes for replicating the position as opposed to an actual historical record of playing that way - which is well within the spirit of the draft.

Kaka for me was a totally different type of player whose best asset was his pace. He was physically explosive in a way Platini wasn't and IMO was never a great playmaker or capable of running a game to the same extent.

I think it makes more sense to put Kaka in the Boniek position, who like Kaka was absolutely lightening quick himself on the counter - Kaka has the movement and industry for the role and IMO is more similar to him in terms of play style.

Again, @Theon @Annahnomoss, maybe we should restrict ourselves from talking about the player roles as it clearly influences the manager's strategy?

@Downcast

People don't have to explain themselves - just stressing that again. If you don't want to reveal what role you have in mind for your pick, that's your prerogative.

Try to keep comments about roles as general as possible - getting technical is not for this thread, that's for the matches.

Something i'm going to do when picking a player, I dont know if others want to follow suit, but is include a picture of both the drafted player and the one hes trying to replicate. I'll have a very brief outline as to why they are similar too, which will be good to refer back to when the games begin.

This is a nice touch, and others may want to do this too. However, others again may not want to reveal precisely what role they have in mind for their man - which is their prerogative.

Also think we should follow the basic draft etiquette of not getting too deeply into discussions which are better saved for the matches. So, while I see no problems with stating briefly why you think Player X is a good choice, actual discussions pertaining to his suitability should be avoided.

Just to reiterate Chester's earlier post, I know it must be tempting to discuss the suitability of picks, but please refrain from doing so in detail for now, as it affects the manager strategy and planning etc quite heavily etc. Basic queries on which players are being remade (manager's prerogative to answer those queries as they wish) or basic comments on the picks are perfectly fine tough.

.... Joke of a pick ,

Easy there mate, no need for the OTT and harsh comment.

@harms

Easy there mate, no need for the OTT and harsh comment.

Apologies overlords

Michael Essien

One of the best midfield engines of the last decade, Michael Essien joins my team replacing Edgar Davids. Both have somehow one-sided reputations of being hardworking, never-say-die attitude water carriers but they both also were very technical ball-carrying players with an impressive passing range. I think that the viewers know enough about Essien and Davids to spare me the long comparison post, I think that their similarity is easily noticeable.

ZONA MISTA -The Complete Defender - BONUCCI

Bonucci has always been one of my favourite ever players
Guardiola following the 2-2 draw between Bayern Munich and Juventus (February 2016)
