The Remake Draft

№7 in Zona Mista is traditionally a player who covers the whole right flank along with №8 (look at Conti in 1982, for example, in the similar system), so the original blueprint is more accurate in terms of the original philosophy.

Hamburg game was actually a game which was lost because of the flaws in the philosophy - Gentile followed Bastrup to the left (masterstoke by Happel), Tardelli had to move to the right full-time etc., so it's not an ideal example

Absolutely. Bettega was extremely disappointing in terms of offensive contribution. He has completely deserted both the right flank and the penalty area !!

I am not surprised to see him leaving the club 2 months later.

@Šjor Bepo

Yeh. Why picked Marchisio when de Rossi was available. Or that other one that is much better defensively.

Rio-Terry, never liked that partnership but makes sense picking them together to build an English defence homage.

Me neither which is strange really as on paper its a great partnership - I think part of the issue is that they played together in a dysfunctional England side.

Aye, agree with that although I don't think the other one fits particularly well into Brazil 82.

De Rossi though looked a good fit for Cerezo IMO.

There's another box to box one, which is one of the best of last decade.

To be honest I didn't consider de rossi however I think Marchisio is one of the best midfielders in the last few years since seria a and I will outline the qualities that mean he can match up quite well in the role. De rossi's passing doesn't match up for me for starters.

There are still a few good choices, not all of them are obvious though.
And none of them are close to Totti's level, obviously

harms, DavidG & myself online: we only need Sjor to make 4 picks in a short period of time

will pick in few minutes, cant decide which route to take :o

Adolfo pedernera was the creative force in La Maquinha. He was as comfortable dropping deep as he was playing as a conventional centre forward, hence his exceptional goal scoring record. Pedernera was the go-to man in his team, both footed and difficult to move off the ball.

Anyone doubting ibrahimovic as a creator can watch this in full, some outstanding assists.

Can see this one being debated quite heavily in the match thread. I myself rate him as an unselfish player however a lot get sidetracked by his media persona and believe he is all about himself.

Sure, he will be widely discussed

Yaya Touré

When we are talking about the vintage 1995 Ajax side one of the first memories that pop up is a vision of their midfield. Three physically resembling black players with similar hairstyle who seemed to be everywhere and were capable of doing anything imaginable with the ball. You wouldn’t guess at first, but only one of them was the honored veteran and the other two were just young prospects from Ajax academy.

Surinam is a hot and often neglected politically troubled land full of rainforests and footballers. It’s five times bigger than the Netherlands, has a total population of less than a million, and for the last two decades it has given Holland a startlingly large number of its best players. Dutch football would have been a good deal less interesting without players like Gullit, Rijkaard, Vanenburg, Davids, Seedorf and ***.

The Surinam connection is now vital to the Dutch game. ‘A Dutch team these days which had no Surinamese players would be a weak, soft, strange Dutch team,’ says the sleek and engaging Humberto Tan, Holland’s only significant black sports journalist, who has written a history of Surinamese players in the Dutch top division, the Eredivisie. ‘It could never happen now. A Holland coach who dared to play without Davids and *** and Seedorf and Reiziger would be committing suicide.’

Surinamese players marry the Brazilian South American style to cooler and more Dutch qualities. Tan: ‘They enjoy the panna [nutmeg]. That is the flavour the Surinamese bring to the Dutch game. It’s skill and a mentality of doing things relaxed and loose, without stress but with results. Dutch people like freedom, which is why they prefer to play in a technical way. So Surinam players blend into Dutch football easily. They share the philosophy. The only difference is that the Dutch players tend to think more in terms of concepts and solutions and are always businesslike. The Surinam player plays more because he likes it. He has more fun. Sometimes he plays not even to win, only to enjoy. The Dutch talk everything through, but the Surinam players play more intuitively. When you combine that with Dutch efficiency, it’s lethal.’

The Surinamese certainly didn’t invent the playful, technical Dutch little more like German football.’

The choice for Seedorf’s replacement was very tough. He had the unique blend of footballing intellect with brilliant technique and outstanding physique. When you first looked him, tall, built like a tank, you expected to see a brutal midfield enforcer, but you shouldn’t judge the book by it’s cover. Inside the body of a body-builder there was a cultured and sophisticated playmaker - and as the years were passing he nurtured that side of his game which eventually will see to his inclusion in football pantheon.

Toure’s reputation took a huge blow in the last few years, as with his physical decline and the current attitude he failed to maintained the ridiculous level that he set up for himself after his transfer from Barcelona. But take a look back and forget about today - Yaya Toure has a reasonable claim to be the most all-rounded midfielder of his generation. He also was the person that pushed Manchester City at the next level - and while now he is seen like a liability he was the main man even with *** and *** alongside him. He played everywhere, from the defence to the attacking midfield position, and he excelled everywhere. His silky ball-control, underrated passing and devastating shots from the distance were not something that you would expect from the originally defensive-minded player. For a long time after his move to England, to the traditionally hard and physical league, he dominated every midfield battle he engaged into - mostly because of the smart use of his athletic qualities combined with the ball-playing skills.

They are not identical. Seedorf was faster and had a better football brain. Toure was probably more gifted naturally and with his unique career path, he showed the world-class ability both defensively (winning the CL final as a center back) and offensively (scoring 20 goals in the single league season). But I believe that Toure would really shine in this position - more offensive than his counterpart on the left and with the support of Rijkaard’s replacement from behind.
