The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

Same here. But I like most of Pacino's old films anyways. Godfather 1 and 2, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Scarface and Carlito's Way.

Include Goodfellas and these films I can never watch again due to overload!

However, I would have no problem whatsoever watchin that scene in Scarface with the mountain of coke on his desk - Classic stuff!

Whats Columbia like at this time of year?

Odds on the winner of best film :

3/1: Apocalypse now

4/1: Seven samurai, Godfather, Raging bull, Life is beautiful, The empire strikes back

7/1: Jaws, Akira, E.T., To kill a mockingbird, Psycho

I love Scarface. If were talking about influence, then not many films have influenced modern popular culture as much as Scarface.

Cool idea chaps, but I have no idea how to even begin figuring out my top 100. Could perhaps manage 50.

Also, who gets the final say on these? We're obviously going to present wildly different lists.

Oh, and Shawshank. Brilliant movie. How can anybody say otherwise?

Good film, but vastly overrated. The ending really spoiled the film. As for the characters, prison film stereotypes. . .the lot of them. Still, it was enjoyable, not seen it for more than a decade mind you.

I watched an hour long documentary once on the influence of DePalma's Scarface on rap culture.

Probably the foundation of the whole hip hop genre.

Apparently it's the most quoted film, ever. I've also heard that even Hispanics try to copy Pacino's version of the Cuban accent.

Bury replied saying he'll make his list. We have 20 atm so even if some opt out (like Plech) or don't want to do 100 (which equates to opting out) we still have plenty.

Another very good German movie I`d recommend is "23 - Nichts ist so wie es scheint"

Instead of modern or contemporary, what about "post old"?

Its cheeky, its daring, I think it has what it takes to take the media by storm.

Simon, I think you're onto something, here! I'm definatley going to work that into my next lecture on postmodern horror films....ahhhh, the pretension of being a Media and Film lecturer!!!! Expect to see it also in print when I finally get around to writing my horror genre text book after a few years on chin-stroking pontification...I'll make sure you are suitably credited in the 'Acknowledgments'! :D

Pretentious film buff bastard.

No faulting Pacino's performance but that was an era where drugs + pointless violence meant every bloke's fantasy movie

I liked Dog Day Afternoon much much better

Dog Day Afternoon is excellent, but Scarface is better.

Attica!! Attica!! Attica!!

Was also shown during Al Pacino's ceremony for the Lifetime Achievement Award by AFI.

I'll list 100 movies, no problem, but I reckon there will be a lot of 1-vote films and making a top 100 of all could very well become an arse pain for whoever's making the list.

or something

But that was then; Scarface is still enjoyable for a younger generation of viewers who've already seen a shitload of coke and blood on the screen.

Why don't you all just do yourselves a favour and either check IMDb top 250 or for those who consider themselves to be movie buffs, just check the IMDb classic board top 200 (the only list I'd recomend to somebody).

Doing a list in Caf is gonna end with plenty of Batmans, Tim Burtons, teen comedies and sci-fi crap.
