The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

Young Frankenstein is my favourite Mel Brooks movie, but even so I personally wouldn't put it in the top 100 movies of all time. When I watched Blazing Saddles I expected more, it really didn't make me laugh a whole lot. Maybe it was just the fact that it couldn't live up to the weight of expectation I had for it.

Anyway, it's all about opinions. Wrong ones and right ones. Mine is right.;)

This is not going according to plan...I had 250 on Thursday, but instead of reducing that figure, I've since thought of 30 more equally good/important films...damn you, whoever proposed this madness...damn you all to hell! (there's a clue to one on my list)

I have Les quatre cent coups, a bout de souffle and jules et jim on my computer.

If I can figure out how to upload them to rapidshare would you like them? (You will need a rapidshare account if you haven't got one already)

Cheers, Ivor. How big are the files?

It's my fault. . .actually blame Mehro.

I'm drinking a cappuccino. I've sussed out how to make a really good cup. Illy beans are top.

I'm wondering just how many remakes will actually make the top 100 (possibly Scarface, but then the original is not widely heard of).

I've got one in mind (a recent updated horror film, which pushes the original close - and it ain't 'Halloween' :nono:), but tend to steer clear if possible.

Scarface remake was significantly different, though. Personally, I don't see the need for them. Infernal Affairs, for example, was brilliant, was there any need for The Departed?

Agreed on Scarface, Spoony...just highlighting that the original exists, which some may not be aware of.

And yes, while I would argue that no film that Scorsese makes is ever poor or unnecessary, perhaps The Departed should be seen as a decent imitation of a fecking all-time classic! And that's as close as I shall ever come to criticising the Greatest Living Film Director!:D

You cleared your in-box yet, mate?;)

Dawn of the Dead?

I've got a list of about 400 I need to whittle down. Not much horror, but quite a kung fu and samurai films.

Got it in one, Raisin!!! Thought I woud hate it, being such a big fan of Romero, but in places it actually beats the original, such as the ending.

Really not trying to overload with accepted 'classics' on my list...I teach a year long study of the horror film to a class, but trying to rein that genre in a bit.

oh god no Michael...

the remake started fantasic, the scene where shes driving down the road with everything crashing was brilliant, but they fecked up the hypermarket etc. The ending was a nice twist but I still think the original had better suspense and better zombies

This isn't public school, you can call me by my christian name.

I'm having similar issues with what kind of movies to pick. I know for example that everyone's gonna pick City of God, so I'm flirting with the idea of replacing it in my list with something a little less high profile like Central do Brasil.

City of God was overrated a bit but it would comfortably make my top 100.

Also I hope I am not the only one to include Fight Club....I know Wibbs hates it but others will see the light hopefully

That's stupid.
You should simply make the list of top 100 movies according to you, forget *** what others are picking. This is not a reality show

Your face is stupid.

But in all seriousness stupidface, you're probably right. I just think it'll be a travesty if some rubbish hollywood fare will get in a head of a more obscure film just because noone has heard of it. It'll probably be easier to just give a straight countdown of my favourite 100 movies as you've suggested, so I'm almost certainly gonna to end up doing that anyway.

Cleaned it yesterday, Hammer. And I agree with Geebs, Dawn of the Dead remake was awful.

Know what you saying here, Geebs...the beginning was such a great way to open up that kind of film...and the twist ending at least showed some originality without moving it too far away from the original (see Burton's Planet of the Apes for cocking that one up!).

Perhaps my critical senses have been a bit dulled, having had to watch so many contemporary horror films recently for my work. Out of all the recent
70s and 80s horror remakes, I enjoyed this one the best.

But why the re-make of Halloween was ever given the 'green light' is beyond me...

Higher than Nueve Reinas?

I made the mistake of seeing the American remake before watching the Argentinian original. It ruined the experience for me.

two different movies, i enjoyed nueve reinas, but is more like the movie "The sting"

and The sting should be in the top 100 movies:

i was actually gutted that they messed up the DOTD remake, i was looking forward to it as the original is possibly my favourite horror movie

what did you make of the Amityville remake?

so it's on your list. excellent, nueve reinas is that kind of movie, not as good as the sting, obviously, but still very good

Can you recommend any other Argentinian films? I've seen El Aura (it's sad what happened to Bielinsky btw) but I'd love to hear about anything else that hasn't got much international attention.
