The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

What am I meant to do?

Make a list of what you think are the best 100 movies by 31st Dec.

feck all hopefully, apart from protest at the farce of this. Any tosser can go on say IMDB and list a few films.

Why exactly is this a farce? You're only protesting because you're not on the panel. Tbf we chose the panel from the movie review thread based on those who showed most interest in movies. Can't get fairer than that imo.

I don't want to be on the panel. It's still a farce however as you've demonstrated by being on it.

That doesn't make any sense.

How can you be on the panel when you stated that you would not even place SR in your top 100? I said it wouldn't be in my top ten, it probably would not even be in my top 20, but FFS!

I don't profess that I am very knowledgeable about film, but I do know that there is a difference between being interested in films and being knowledgeable about them, and such a panel would require the latter, which makes the panel a farce. Many men are interested in DIY - ask their wives about how knowledgeable they are.

I'm actually great at DIY.

I think Shawshank Redemption is an extremely overrated movie. Basically a rip off from Escape From Alcatraz, only difference being it carried forward none of the qualities that made Escape such a good movie. And Tim Robbins is such a poor actor.

I believe I've seen a lot of movies and I'm pretty sure I've seen 100 that were better than Shawshank.

He's right about the Shawshank Redemption too

Great film, except the ridiculous scene where he plays opera to the hardened convicts and they all weep for the uncageable beauty of the human soul

Great film, crap title, which is why it had to make all its money back on video

Mehro's right - sentimental weak-minded bollox. Easily 1000 movies better than Shawshank.

Is that really you mehro?

Shawshank was nothing like Alcatraz, considering former did not focus on the escape at all.

And Tim robbins a shit actor indeed..... He does the same role most of the times but plays them extremely well.

Shawshank is overrated in the sense that it should not be a no.2 movie of all time on imdb. But it should comfortably make the top 50 list for me.

Shawshank is overrated, but there's no use arguing whether it should be in the top 100 films until the panelists actually present their top films. Mind you, I thought Green Mile and Dead Man Walking were rubbish as well.

Cool idea chaps, but I have no idea how to even begin figuring out my top 100. Could perhaps manage 50.

Also, who gets the final say on these? We're obviously going to present wildly different lists.

Oh, and Shawshank. Brilliant movie. How can anybody say otherwise?

Can I suggest to the 15 nominated panellists that when you submit your initial list of 100 films, that any foreign film really needs to have its Englsih translation included as well where possible. This will really help when I get to collate the nominations (or rather, my unsuspecting students will find it helpful!). For example 'Shichinin no samurai' (The Seven Samurai)...this will avoid certain films getting less initial votes as it looks like they might be two seperate films...if you follow my drift.

Or maybe I'm getting a bit pedantic?
