The Redcafe Top 100 movies: Discussion and Preparation

I'll list 100 movies, no problem, but I reckon there will be a lot of 1-vote films and making a top 100 of all could very well become an arse pain for whoever's making the list.

or something

That'll be me then!:D

As designated 'vote compiler' I have called upon the services of some trained monkeys (i.e. my degree students!) to help out.

But a point has been raised about 1-vote films...I'll see how it all pans out and cross that bridge when I come to it. As long as The Usual Suspects makes the final cut I'm not bothered!

Why don't you all just do yourselves a favour and either check IMDb top 250 or for those who consider themselves to be movie buffs, just check the IMDb classic board top 200 (the only list I'd recomend to somebody).

Doing a list in Caf is gonna end with plenty of Batmans, Tim Burtons, teen comedies and sci-fi crap.

If we did it in the General, sure. But this is a highly respectable* panel of judges here...

* we're not respectable at all, except for this hammer fellow perhaps.

Spoony

How's your top 100 going so far? I tried to start mine yesterday during a lecture break, and found I had around 250 off the top of my head. Think I'm going to break them down into personal favourites and those I think are 'important' films for whatever reason...milestones, achievement etc.

Now trying to go through genre by genre and identify them that way, without it being too much like a 'classics' list. For example, I do like The Searchers, but I think there are better Western's, or at least one's I like better..if you know what I mean!

So is the plan for the designated panellists to put up our individual list in the thread or by PM?

Just tried to PM you about it all, but it says you haven't any more space to take any more messages until you get rid of some...maybe its all the Shawshank fans taking you to task!!!

I'll clean my PM box in a minute, Hammertime.

I'm not doing my top 100 till I see:

Casablanca
M
Metropolis
12 Angry Men.
Sunset Boulevard.
Dr Strangelove(yes, I haven't seen it!)
and a few French New Wave films.

I tried to watch Fellini's 81/2 but couldn't get into it, so I'm not sure whether to watch La Dolce Vita.

basically give me a few weeks.

feck, I almost forgot about Fellini.

La Dolce Vita it is.

Good thing I took all those film classes at my Uni.

must give Fellini a look alright, i generally think that foreign films are for wankers and supposed academics (i.e. wankers). Obviously City of God etc are exceptions

Almost all films are foreign to you. I mean has Ireland got much of a cinema?

I did History, but took a fair few film studies courses.

Ahh. Wouldn't mind doing a Masters in films studies or something.

God, that would be easy, although it might depend on where you go. I know all of my film papers were nothing but BS and I almost always scored A's on them.

Hey, Spoons, I'm leaving work soon, so have a great weekend mate. Someday I'll have the net at home and we can party.

Cheers.

well we've won 2 consecutive awards at Cannes, so it can't be too bad now is it?

Which films?

I've seen one that I would love to do through the Open University which combines Contemporary American History (the Cold War, Vietnam, Watergate etc) and Film (Horror, Film Noir and the Vietnam films of the 70s, 80s and
90s). Ideal!!!

God knows when I'll get round to doing it with all the lecturing I have to do, plus the 8 year old twins with all their Saturday and Sunday morning football.

How does Open University work?

You study through distance learning instead of going to regular university lectures...there are some weekend seminars that you need to attend, but its designed to fit around your life, rather than the other way round...takes an awful lot of commitment, but would suit me better at the moment, rather than having to reduce my lecturing hours (and money!).

Haven't seen M and Metropolis from that list. Spoony, don't forget the Third Man if you haven't seen it yet.

Well, you are in for a treat with that little list.

12 Angry Men is awesome
Metropolis is ahead of its time, even now
Sunset Boulevard is one of the seminal film noirs
Strangelove is both hilarious, but chilling at the same time
While La Nouvelle Vague (film geek alert!!!) are amongst the best out there!

Oh, and yes, watch La Dolce Vita...supercool film!

Excellent. It will suit me. . . and hopefully I'll have a MA within the next decade.

I haven't. . .so I'll add it to my list.

I have Les quatre cent coups, a bout de souffle and jules et jim on my computer.

If I can figure out how to upload them to rapidshare would you like them? (You will need a rapidshare account if you haven't got one already)

All three are in my top 250, before I start whittling the list down.

Your computer has impeccable taste, Ivor!;)
