The MMA thread

Last night at Combate Americas, Nate Diaz got into a fight with Clay Guida and Stockton slapped Tyler Diamond (participant of the current TUF).

Poor Yair, nobody told him that he can skip fights as long as he remains in the media for whatever pathetic reason.

Watch this guy jumping over the barrier 30 seconds in.

Har lunch with Hermansson and his coach a few weeks ago. Has to be the one og the nicest guys in sports. So humble and friendly.

Close fight between Jacare and Kelvin. The take down in hte 2nd round probably tipped things in Gastelum's favor in the end. Striking was pretty even though.

It's not up to them though, all she needed to do was say to the ref "i'm done".

It's part of the corner's job to protect their fighter, even from herself. They're supposed to be willing to throw in the towel even against their fighter's wishes. For them to send her out again after she actually says she's done is pretty bad.

It's also part of their job to fire up the fighter, make a judgement call and encourage them.

If she didn't want to fight on she didn't have to.

Nah, the onus can't be on the fighter to stop the fight because fighters will regularly keep on fighting even when they're seriously damaged. That's why responsibility is placed on both the corner and referee. Any fighter can stop the fight whenever they want but if you leave it up to them you'll end up with badly hurt fighters.

Her corner is supposed to be able to spot when their fighter is too damaged to go on, even if the fighter is insisting they're fine. For them not to realise she's too damaged to go on when she actually tells them she's done is immensely stupid on their part. Persuading her to take more pointless punishment (or even forcing her to ask the referee to stop the fight) is negligent on their part. Hell, they didn't even stop it when Nunes landed that takedown. Even when their hail mary didn't work they still let her keep going.

Thought it was poor form to allow her to continue fighting, which was validated by the result in the 5th round. Reminds me a bit of the last MacDonald/Lawler fight where Rory was not fit to continue but did until he whinced in pain and the fight stopped.

Last night i thought she was mentally broke ("I'm done", she realized she was gonna loose the fight), but fit to continue.

Even after the fight, you could see her standing there in the celebrations, all good.

Unless a fighter has lost his/her wits (fighting in auto pilot after several knockdowns for example), i don't think the corner should step up and throw the towel. In this case, Raquel was definitely still there. The chance, although minimal, for a comeback like Miesha Tate vs Holm was still there.

If she really wanted out she can stop the fight, it kinda feels like she just wanted the decision taken out of her hands so it didn’t come back on her.
It is however a weird one and they will know her a lot better than any of us. She maybe doubts herself a lot and normally does things like this in training and just needs that little bit of encouragement to get herself going. If she was properly broken, could hardly hold herself up or was taking a massive beating with nothing going back then I’m sure they’d have pulled her.

Another to take in to account is it’s a title fight, maybe they didn’t want her to possibly have any regrets later on if that was a possibility.

On the flip side of that tho, if she was properly switched off then going out in to a fight is a bit stupid, but again if she really wanted out she can stop it.

Mackenzie Dean throws hood hands. Her striking is clearly not there yet although she must have some power at least. Bit sketchy not making the weight but if the commission told her Friday morning to stop can see why she would be 7pounds over. Was good to hear her say she is now going to go to the performance centre so hopefully doesn’t happen again. Can see them pushing her way too fast for that division to try and forge that star when she’d be better to slow her roll and fight people around her level or easy prey to build herself up.

Also, is Gastelum’s chin made out of titanium or does The crocodile not have any power. Gas was taking far too many shots for my liking just staying on the centre line.

Gastelum/Jacare was awesome. Two proper tough, likeable guys going at it and putting on a show as expected.

I'd love to see Gastelum/Whittaker for the title at some point. Two young dudes in their prime with tonnes of quality. No idea where they go once Whittaker/Romero fight. Weidman beat Gastelum last year but he's still out due to surgery and he's only had a one fight win streak after losing three in a row. Gastelum just beat Jacare but how do you give him a title shot ahead of Weidman when Weidman beat him? With Rockhold moving up to LHW I'm not sure what they give Gastelum or Weidman next. Maybe Gastelum get's the loser of next months title fight.

I've never see the official scorecards but Rory was most likely 3-1 up going into the 5th, he'd have been mad to quit.

But Gastelum defeated Bisping, who KO'd Rockhold, who defeated Weidman. It's all good.

Gastelum will get the next title shot for sure.
