The Media and their treatment of Raheem Sterling | Agrees new 5 year deal

The the sun's main problem is that he is rich and black.
This is pretty much it. Kane became a meme and the press rallied to his side with all the "he is national treasure. Don't upset him" meanwhile they happily take any opportunity to bring Sterling down. It's all very transparent.

It's ridiculous. He gets criticised for shopping in Primark and using EasyJet but then also criticised for spending money.

Sorry but Sterling's tattoo has got absolutely fecking nothing to do with anyone else but himself. It's a piece done in memoriam of his father, its personal to him, and what he inks onto his own body is precisely nobody else's business.

I don't have a single tattoo myself, so i'm not saying this out of some "solidarity" amongst tattooed brethren. Something that is personal to him matters only to him and him alone. The opinion of anyone else means absolutey nothing and I really hope Sterling isn't affected in any way by people talking in the media. They truly, truly, need to shove their opinions on this up their arse.

His reasons for having the tattoo even make sense. He uses his right leg to bang in goals.
I'm not into tattoos but leave him be.

I like him in Lidl's new world cup advert. That's enough for me.

Hilarious how people in here think they're in a position to tell Sterling how he should appropriately remember his father.

"Gun Tattoo confirms Raheem Sterling's place as history's worst monster"

He put a picture of himself pointing at it on social media, as a world famous footballer.

It's personal to him in the same way that something would be personal to me if I deliberately announce it to the world on sky news.

Now I'm not saying that doesn't make the criticism of it a bit silly, but the false outrage and need to pretend that this is all part of some racist agenda against him is a little bit pathetic.

He posed for a picture showing off a gun tattoo. Now, whatever people think of the intelligence level of pro footballers, I'm quite sure Sterling is an intelligent enough adult to know what that might imply to some people, so actually, a certain level of criticism is probably justified.

He didn't post it saying "hey guys, I'm getting a tattoo done, it's in memory of my father....etc." he only chose to say that after the criticism surfaced. All people had to go on initially was him, showing off a drawing of a gun on his leg.

What this leaves you with is the question, is Raheem Sterling the only England player getting criticised for this, because the press are racist, or is he the only England player getting criticised for it, because he's the only one who turned upwith a tattoo of a gun to show off"?

Realistically, everyone in this thread knows full well that if Harry Kane did the same thing, it would still attract silly negative attention.

I'm not saying I care about the tattoo. It's his choice. He can't exactly do any worse than Sane, but if youre a world famous footballer, people will always have opinions on what you do. Particularly when you're with your national team.

For God's sake, it's just a tattoo, why are the media so obsessed!

Also here's a list of each headline from The Sun. You can see them trying to paint a picture, what is their beef?

Bit daft from Raheem not seeing the 'big picture.' Really daft from The Sun for loads of reasons.

Anyone getting very excited about it now he's explained it is a moron.

Didn't kids used to spend most of their leisure time playing with guns & other weapons? We didn't have access to the real thing quite so readily maybe, so this is essentially a picture of a gun what he's messing about with isn't it? They have them in magazines & films often enough.

It's all that shite music they like listening to that needs sorting out.

What shite music in particular?

I am not going to have a go at the lad. He has come from an exceptionally tough background, which most people could never comprehend. From what is coming out it isn't even finished yet, so we can presume he will put a message with it. Would I criticise the lady who complained, no, her son was shot, so people should understand her distress. Do I think there is a vendetta against Sterling by certain newspapers, too damn right I do. How dare he become successful and make the best of his talents and make money. It must be seriously P***ing off some of these papers.

Agree with every part of your post

Their beef is money and racism sells.

I hate that this shithouse newspaper make me want to defend a City player ffs

I wish he could just turn around to them and tell them to go feck themselves,

Maybe the fact the he grew up supporting United and many in his family do could make it easier to stomach?

A quote from the horrendous Kelvin Mackenzie when he was the Sun editor, "You just don't understand the readers, do you, eh? He's the bloke you see in the pub, a right old fascist, wants to send the w#gs back, buy his poxy council house, he's afraid of the unions, afraid of the Russians, hates the queers and the weirdos and drug dealers. He doesn't want to hear about that stuff (serious news)". 40yrs later and this paper still has a huge readership, unfortunately Sterling finds himself right in the middle of their warped agenda.

actually feck it, Ill say it - in case my piss-taking gets misconstrued (which would be my own fault)

he's getting shit for being an uppity n*gger isn't it? - and see Ashley Cole previously

whereupon, if it was a white player doing anything like it or like AC previously (how many examples do you want) - it just wouldn't happen (in this way)

One thing alot of football fans have in common is their hatred for the sun newspaper. I personally don't read mainstream news that much and don't really pay much attention to it if I am exposed to it but many people's views are shaped by the likes of the sun.

From what I've seen on social media today (Twitter, Facebook etc) the vast majority have defended Sterling whilst a few such as piers Morgan have blasted him. Maybe the general population see through the bullshit that is the sun or maybe this is just social media users who are quite savvy compared to other folk.

Why is it stupid ? It ain't like it's a swastika or something

Come on mate, a kids idol, young players wanna be him. All they will see is an assault rifle and young kids in gangs will think *cool*. Fair enough Sterling can do what he wants, but he should see what influence he has on kids.

Just my view, I can’t stand The Sun and the parasite journos they employ but if he didn’t see this coming he is very naive. The same thing happened Rhianna.

Tattoos are a form of art and expressing yourself using your own body as a canvas. A tattoo has meaning to the person that gets it. It doesn’t matter what you, I, Piers Morgan or Betsy down the road think about it. End of.

And in general the way Sterling is treated by the British press is so obviously racist I’m stunned they haven’t managed to stick an n word somewhere in before. It’s probably the only thing they haven’t done yet.

This is spot on.

Rich, black and not entirely English.
Absolutely this.
If I were him, I wouldn't play for England. There's no prestige playing for Jamaica (I think he was born there?), but at least he won't have to deal with the English media. I swear if Kane scores an own goal at the World cup they'd probably still find a way to blame it on Sterling.

Wtf, you have guns displayed everywhere and anywhere on movies, tvs, internet ?
The only thing it could impact on is kids wanting to have a tattoo of the same but if one day a kid picks up a rifle because Sterling has it tattooed on him, the real issue will be somewhere else and not on Sterling. He has his reasons, he doesn' t need to justify himself.

By this insane logic, we should launch a campaign to change Arsenal’s badge because it has a firearm on it. How about we change Utds badge because it features a Red Devil and therefore Utd promotes satanism?

Some of these people have to have some ulterior motive to just want attention, when I see stories like this

I never said he did? It his choice but someone having a gun as a tattoo are going to get people talking, it doesn’t matter the reasons for it, that’s just human nature. I couldn’t give a shit what he tattoos himself with but he should have seen this coming. The vast majority of the population would automatically think “gang”or “thug” if they seen someone with that tattoo. Again I honestly couldn’t give a shit, I quite like Sterling.

Then what is the problem ?

well excuse me ?!

Why are u asking me? I don’t have one, ask The Sun lol. I don’t have a problem with Tattoos I have some but I know I’m judged on them, I don’t think less of the people that don’t like them.

Would I get a tattoo of a gun? No.
