Steven Defour

Thing is its the kind of transfer that just seems to make sense, so I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. A bit like the Valencia one, it just almost became an inevitability.

I see this transfer more realistic than others involving big name players..

I looked at the letter from Standard Liege to United about SAF's letter and have discovered why he wants to leave. They wrote the letter in Comic Sans. Can anyone blame him?

if he is open to a move , wonder if liverpool will go in for him

What sort of a central midfielder is he? I've only seen him twice and thought he was a tidy enough passer. Is he combative enough to play alongside an attack minded midfielder or alternatively is he creative enough to play alongside a defensive minded midfielder?

Yeah i know, but is he playing regularly for Standard now?

To be fair, Rodwell apparently have an ankle injury keeping him out. I still can't see him displacing Everton's midfield when he's ready so i don't know what the fuss over him about either. Perhaps it's the goal he scored when we went there.

Hes just come back from a serious career threatening injury, hes clearly a very highly rated player.

Jack Rodwell can hardly get in the Everton first team yet the jizz fest over him is apparent whenever hes mentioned.

I thought he just broke a bone in his foot. It wasn't career threatening.

It's ridiculous how many mentions he gets in the transfer threads when outside of the two Belgians no-one's seen enough to have a real clue about him.

He's getting back to form is what I heard yesterday on some Belgian football program.

They asked him about a transfer to United in the January transfer period and he just said there wasn't any contact at the moment between the clubs but that he is looking for a move out of Belgium this year. Could be January, could be in the summer.

Ahh, I was under the impression Defour was an attacking midfielder

Plays deep like Carrick. Doesnt mean he cant smash them in now and again but its not like every midfielder needs to either be defensive or offensive. Defour has qualities suited to both roles

Got this PM from Nick S in the newbs, more about this Defour bloke

'Steven Defour isn't playing in the Belgian squad at the moment because of his injury but he is playing for Standard. He's not at his full potential yet but should be soon. There's a lot of commotion in the Belgian squad at the moment so I would not be surprised if that came into the picture. He's a tight passer and players as a center midfielder or an attacking midfielder. He used to be sh*t at tracking back but he's gotten good at helping out the defense. I suppose you could compare him to Scholes (position wise).

Funny story in a Belgian newspaper. They quoted TalkSport that stated that Defour was a promise to Rooney when he renewed his contract. Defour started laughing at it himself (in the show Extra Time on TV here yesterday) and said he'd never been on the phone with Rooney, and that Manchester have not contacted him since the injury letter from SAF. However he did say that United are closely following him, as are Liverpool. This kid loves Man Utd so I doubt he'd sign for the scousers.

Ajax has been trying to buy him twice now but he stayed at Standard. However he said on TV yesterday that this is definitely his last season at the club.'

So I have never watched or heard about him.

What kind of a player is he and is he that good?I mean people are calling for us to sign him over other "well known" players?

My question would be is he better than what we already have, is he better than say Carrick?

If not, then shouldn't we target the likes of Sneider rather than Defour..

10 goals in 95 matches...

do we really need aother CM that doesnt know how to score?

Sure. Xavi has scored 36 goals in 358 games for Barcelona. De Rossi (my preferred choice) has scored 28 goals in 226 games for Roma (he scores a bit more for Italy though). It's not all that matter. He also plays in a league where there generally aren't scored many goals.

Can't judge him by the goal stats. No idea how his assists stats are where as I know Xavi delivers well in that department.

We lack both to be fair.

True, although since classic Scholes became great old Scholes our MC haven't really been in the business of scoring goals. It's been a while since someone in that position produced 5-10 goals per season in the league yes?

That's not really the point, Xavi plays in a team where most his team mates scores. Sure, it might have to do with la liga being a rich mans SPL...
The point though is that Anderson, Gibson, Park, Carrick, Scholes and Giggs have scored a total of 2 goals in 27 match opportunities so far this season in PL (adding all matches and goals).
We can not rely in Hernandez, Berba and Nani (and eventually Rooney) doing all the work
We need a creative midfielder that knows how to score.
