Steven Defour

Future front 6 according to all the speculation and muppetry.

Defour back for Standard

Steven Defour returned to first team last weekend, Liege beat KV Mechelen 3-0. He made big impression on players around him, they are all 10%-50% better with him in team. Witsel scored two and he has been pitiful without Defour. Without doubt, Defour - when fit - best player in Belgian league.

That "when fit" bit makes me nervous when you bear in mind who he would be replacing. I know he recently broke his leg but what's his overall injury record like?

He had a broken leg early in 2009-10, then I think he has had a hamstring and a dislocated shoulder (possibly dislocated twice). Just come back from shoulder injury - will be playing tonight in cup quarter final 2nd leg.

I agree with other poster, that one of his major qualities is leadership and what he gives to other players.

A central midfielder who's a born leader, with a recurrently dislocating shoulder. Hmmm... that's kind of familiar.

How good class is it in the Belgium league?

Not good as very low budgets. Five teams have budgets big enough and organisation/infrastructure to compete: Anderlecht, Club Brugge, Standard Liege, Ghent and Genk. Top players in league at the moment are Boussoufa, Biglia (Anderlecht), Vargas, Perisic (Brugge), Defour (Standard), Jorgacevic (Ghent), Courtois, De Bruyne (Genk).

I haven't included Lukaku as too much hype, only 17, and for me he's a possible. Also El Ghanassy, Mboyo and Soumahoro could come good with Ghent (excellent coach).

But all of those would be bottom third of Premiership, top half Championship in the UK.

Watched Belgium v Austria, I'm with gambit he seems to be much more of a Hargreaves than a Carrick. Aggressive, mobile, positionally disciplined and a useful crosser.

Also, I'm surprised that in all the time we've been linked with him and the amount of times people have complained about our set pieces that no-one has mentioned he takes them!

Last time I saw him he was still getting pushed over. Mind you L. Diarra put Hargreaves on his ass one of the few times he played for us. Mobile is not a word I'd use to describe him and passing is definitely one of his strongest skills.

Axel Witsel was the stand-out player for me.

Is usually the case when someone scores both goals in a 2-0 win.

I thought, aside from the goals, he showed some lovely touches but no-one really stood out in a mediocre game. Some lovely midfield play from Belgium but there was very little cutting edge, Ogunjimi didn't look up to it. Witsel did well to step up to the plate in that sense.

Looks very talented though certainly.

Did you watch the Argentina-USA match by any chance? If not put that on your list to download. You seem to have watched most other internationals this week

I'd already watched the first half-hour of it but not got around to following it on yet, some of the link-up was magic though.

Have to watch some of the u20 SA championships first I think, want to see some more of Neymar and Lucas.

I'm just watching the 2nd half of Brazil and Scotland. Saw Argentina but missed that one.

While the whole team seemed to die down a bit after the U.S scored, I thought Argentina's midfield and attack linked up with a Barcelona-amount of passing. I cant remember ever hearing your thoughts on Banega, so I'd be interested to see what you think after that match

Where do you watch these matches from?

Link please.

This Defour reminds you of Bryan Robson?

Yup, as in nowhere near as good as him but something about him, the way he runs with the ball, the way he passes, the way his shots are immensely powerful yet seem to be in slo-mo, even the way he celebrates. He's even begining to acquire Robbos repetitive injuries.

Rumours that there have been meetings between Damien Comoli & Steven Defour's agent Paul Stefani re move to Liverpool. These stories eminating from Goal.com - could be true of course. United rumours seem to date from SAF's letter to him a couple of years ago. He's out injured (thigh strain) at moment but should be back at weekend vs. Club Brugge. His club - Standard Liege - are in top form.

Every time I've heard his name mentioned recently it has been in conjunction with an injury.
