Steven Defour

Interesting, he didn't seem physical enough from the vids I saw to play in anything but a midfield 3.

This whole have to be incredibly physical to play in a midfield 2 is overerstated I feel. As the players get older they get stronger and it's an area that can be worked on as well. The more important issue is having a foil that can add the protection to the midfield allowing the creative player to express themselves more.

Nice examples of players who don't have a good physique but can play in a 4-4-2 and give wonderful performances are Scholes and Modric ( last season )

Yes, I'd like a more all round person with good physique who has the passing visions and long shots like Scholes...

But even saying that, Paul Scholes type of players don't grow on branches, there is one of a kind in each generation...

Will Defour be Scholes replacement ? Who knows, I have not seen enough of him, but I'm not getting carried away because I don't see how we will ever find a player that is similar to Paul Scholes again.

I'm sure Defour can make up to the physical side of the game, as he has more pace than Scholes and from the looks of it he has a good engine... But will he ever have the same long shots + vision ? I don't think so...

Would gladly have him at 12m though as I don't think the price is too inflated...

Guess by looks, United player or not?

I say yes :D

Our own Scholes and the aforementioned Modric prove your point if the player has the work ethic, it was just the slightness of Ninis that to me made him seem more ideal for the wing, perhaps b/c he is still so young, has he played in a 2 for Panathanikos?

From what i can gather Pana' tend to play 4-3-1-2 with Ninis as the 1, allowed to roam. Could be wrong though.
I know you can't really take to much stock in youtube comps, but heres another

I saw Ninis play on the wings for Greece, didn't impress me much though as everytime he got the ball, he tended to lose it... Dribbling wise and speed wise he couldn't beat the fullback.... Well it was a 20 minute cameo which didn't come off...

Heard he was doing well for Pana though... But on my list he'd be a bit behind that Hazard and Sanchez bloke.

Don't see what they bring that we don't have though. I also think we're sorted for wingers for the near future. Our wings are plentiful, we've got good strikers and our defenders are sorted, just a case of central midfield and the goalie, but we've been linked to all of them and we'll probably sign someone called god knows that we've never heard of before.

1) ....Think Steven Defour will sign for United in the Summer.

2) I rate Defour yes.Reckon he'd be great scholes replacement.Reckon United may sign 1 in jan.be 4-5 in Summer. To early to be sure,If Van der sarr,Giggs,Nevile & Scholes all decide to retirer it may be more than that.Owen will leave too.

3) Benzema,Defour,Henderson,Huddlestone,Stekelenburg Sanchez & Isla.

Dunno who Isla is and why are we linked with huddlestone ???

He also thinks that Lass Diarra may be a potential recruit if someone does not sign him in January.

Isla is the Chilean Dani Alves, right wingback from the world cup I think? Could be getting names confused.

Good stuff, I've seen him play a few times and he has a good array of attributes, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed if we signed him.

Stekenlenburg and Huddlestone are a little overrated here. I hope neither of them come to United in the future. We don't need Isla because we have Brown and Rafael in his position.

Is Steven Defour overrated or has anyone actually seen him play? Don't tell me he is good just because he is good in FM. Is he a worthy replacement for Scholes? Is he good enough to play for us?

I think he's shit due to the fact no one seems to know anything about him.

The agent of Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour has warned Manchester United they face a battle for his signature.

After a stunning recovery, Defour has shown flashes of the form that made him one of Europe's top targets, with a January move to Old Trafford touted.

But Defour’s agent Paul Stefani believes the player needs time to fully recover, saying: "He is playing really well and has reacted well since his return from injury. He is playing well but he needs three or four games to be better than 100 per cent and prove himself in his position.

"Yes, it is true he is being watched. He is being monitored by seven clubs at the moment from England, France, Spain and Italy."

When asked if a move in the transfer window was a possibility, he replied: "We don’t know. It depends on the club and whether or not there is a big move in the January window that could see other people move."

"I have received positive phone calls from clubs in the UK, who have said they can do things, so we will wait and see," he told sport.co.uk.

could be the dippers

The agents say this due to the fact that they want their player to get higher wages and get to a bigger club sooner.

This quote is quite interesting:

"We don’t know. It depends on the club and whether or not there is a big move in the January window that could see other people move."

Is he saying that Defour moving is dependent on whether the club he's destined for, can sell someone on first?

I would interpret "the club" as being Standard Liege.

Yeah, I understood that part but he cites the club as one reason, I thought the other one seemed like a cryptic message. Maybe I've just read too much into the usual agent lingo.

On second thoughts, maybe he's talking about the move being dependant on standard being able to bring in a replacement.

Yeah, that's how I would read it.

Feck knows though. Agents make shit up all the time.

Defour reveals new club choice - report

Manchester United, 10:37, November 5, 2010 , | No Comments

Standard Liege's Steven Defour is reportedly willing to snub other clubs in a bid to secure a move to Manchester United.

The 22-year-old Belgian international midfield playmaker has been heavily linked with moves to a myriad of Premier League clubs with United always thought to be leading the race for his signature.
And, following his agent Paul Stefani's revelation this week that seven sides - thought to include Everton and Liverpool - are looking to sign Defour, a report claims Old Trafford is his favoured destination.
Goal.com has quoted a supposed source close to Defour saying he would reject Liverpool if he thought he could win a move to United.
The source said: "There are many big clubs interested in Steven but he does not want to play for Liverpool at this moment,
"For the last two years Manchester United has been his number one choice and if he plays for Liverpool he is unlikely to fulfil that dream because of the rivalry between the teams.
"He would love to play under [Sir Alex] Ferguson and there may not be another chance if his next move is not to Manchester.
"But both clubs are watching him very closely and he is flattered by all the interest and takes it seriously."

Concrete evidence there!

Unless the 'source' is actually him, then I dont believe it.

Still, I'd rather we went for a more creative player instead.

I hope we really don't spend around 12M for this lad. He is not that well known and his performances have not been sparkling either. I think we are spending a lot of money for Defour and taking a risk.

I know it's Goal.com but is it so hard to believe a player would be so keen to come to United, and that someone in the clubs circle has leaked out that kind of info that does him no favours if he doesn't get a move here?

Steven Defour played in Belgium's 2-0 win in Russia earlier tonight, and I thought it was worth mentioning because he totally ran the show in midfield. He really reminded me of Scholes today.
