Steven Defour

Dont know why people are doubting that this is true, both Van Nistelrooy and Hargreaves both claimed that the manager was one of the first on the phone when they both received major injuries prior to signing for United

But yes the more pressing question is what position does he play and is he any good?

that's sick, is fergie the tranfer version of a bloke getting the social worker shag?

They say (Belgian fans) he has great fitness and is box to box, likes to get involved in the midfield, and has a very cocky attitude. One that we might be able to interpret as a winning one. I'm not sure why we're being linked with so many center mids though.

all this is interesting. this isn't SA's first picnic. he's not going to suddenly do something stupid/illegal and i'll bet being embarrassed isn't something he concerns himself with.

I remember reading that Sir Alex used to send brithday and christmas cards to Phillippe Mexes back when he was at Auxerre

Would be brilliant if Sir Alex sent a bunch of christmas cards out to some Spurs players this season, give Levy something for that dossier

This has all the hallmarks of a Spoony wum.

Dear Sir Alex of the Ferguson,

I am feel much joy at you kind words. It mean much to have such a wonderful mister say such kind thing on me. I will love to play of the Manchester in season 10.

Many kiss,
Steven

What type of midfielder is he? I remember his being compared to Xabi Alonso, but I don't know how legitimate that is. Anyone have more information on him?

Energetic midfielder, box to box, attitude problems, was only compared to Xabi because he was being touted as a replacement

Not heard too much about his attitude problems as he is the club captain i'm assuming they aren't that bad.

His possibly compared to Alonso because by most accounts he is an excellent passer of the ball and functions as a pretty good playmaker. According to World Soccer magazines profiles his coaches also say that considering the positions he gets into and the quality of his shooting he should score more goals.

looks a real prospect though.

VDS, Kuszczak, Foster

Rio, Vida, Evra, Brown, O'Shea, Evans, Rafael, Gary, Fabio, De Laet=Fighting for four positions

Valencia, Giggsy, Nani, Park, Obertan=Fighting for two positions

Scholes, Carrick, Ando, Fletcher, Gibson, Hargreaves=Fighting for two positions

Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Macheda, Diouf==Fighting for two positions

That could be another explanation.. but guess you won't be satisfied unless we have a 40men squad.

What on earth happened to this guy?

Looked like Fergie was really keen on him.

Any watchers of Belgium football know whether he's back yet and how well he's playing?

He's partly gone off the radar a little because Standard are struggling in Belgium this year, currently 7th in the league. He's been back for about 5 games now, and hasn't done anything too special since his return, but that's not unusual for players coming back from injury.

I think the fact that Standard look unlikely to qualify for a CL place this season means he might move elsewhere, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a January or Summer move.

Thats pretty good news from our point of view as Fergie tends to be stubborn about the players he wants. I wonder whether we could get them to throw in Witsel.

Yeah I think Witsel would be a good purchase, but whether we go for him (if Fergie is interested) probably depends on whether he feels that Hargreaves can return fully - both playing a similar role. Witsel's looked really good this season though, and scored a fantastic goal at Lokeren last week. He's been better than Standard's form in general suggests.

Think they'd be reluctant to sell the both of them on though, as they're the backbone of the Standard midfield.

He's still out injured, and Standard are missing him badly. They lost 2-0 to Circle Bruges on Saturday evening. They're sitting in 7th.

I stand slightly corrected. He has played 5 games this season, though.

They were unlucky against Cercle Brugge. Standard hit the post when it was 0-0 and then had a few more chances to take the lead. They also had one effort which came off the bar and looked to have possibly gone in, and conceded off a counter attack and a free kick.

They've still underachieved this season though, ofc. Looks like Anderlect or Club Brugge will probably win the title this year.

Edit: Just noticed I typed 8th in the League a few posts back. Not sure why I did; but the 7th you put is right, Rock. I even had the table up when I posted. :nervous:

Defour is still out injured like RockOfGibraltar said. And as for the guy that said Defour has "attitude problems"... that's absolute nonsense. He's been Standard's club captain for a few years now, and they are missing him a lot, because he's always the first one to work hard and run his ass off for the team. He's a great example on and off the pitch for his teammates. I don't know where you get the idea that he's got attitude problems...

Bloody hell its bin a day... Fergie sent him a nice love letter to remind him how much we still wanted him... I'm sure he's still on our radar, just kind of hard to keep mentioning a guy that has been injured!! Where's the fun in that.

But what is he a Darren Fletcher or a Xabi Alonso?? I'm a bit confussed.

Defour signs new contract with Standard Liege

Sir Alex Ferguson's attempts to woo Steven Defour have hit a setback, with the Belgium starlet signing a new deal at Standard Liege.

The 21-year-old midfielder, also the subject of approaches by Liverpool, Everton and Real Madrid, has extended his contract at Standard till 2015.

Ferguson's admiration was revealed in October when it had emerged the Manchester United boss had penned a get-well-soon letter to Defour, who had suffered a nasty broken foot.

Defour has since recovered and seems satisfied in Belgium.

He has previously shown patience in his career development by turning down a move to Ajax three years ago.

Standard made him their captain despite his young age and won the league title under his leadership in 2008 - when he was named Belgium's player of the year - and in 2009.

Announcing the contract extension, Standard released a statement saying: 'With this decision our captain has clearly made a statement that he does not want to leave us yet.'

Were not talking Hamsik playing in serie a here though, this lad would probably cost us about 18 million even with the new contract. All depends if Ferguson feels we need another midfielder now that Hargreaves is looking like recovering.

Roy Hodgson swoops to steal Standard Liege's Steven Defour from under the nose of Sir Alex Ferguson

As Inter Milan prepare their first bid for unsettled Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, manager Roy Hodgson has stepped up the search for his replacement.

The Liverpool boss was due to watch Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour in Belgium last night and is considering a £10million bid for a player who is also a target for Manchester United.

So keen are United on the 22-year-old Belgium international that manager Sir Alex Ferguson wrote him a letter of encouragement when he broke his foot last year and has since kept an eye on his year-long recovery.

He would only go to the dippers if United decide not to make a move for him, and if we decide not to make a move for him I don't care where he goes, a la Joe Cole.

On the other hand, we could bid for him... and wait for Man City to come in immediately with £30M offer...

thats a load of wank tbh

Defour it seems would be here by now if Fergie was that interested in him. The fact he isnt probably means SAF has lost interest or doesnt think the time is right...or is broke as many will say!

he is/was recovering from an injury and isn't back 100% yet.

It is possible that SAF is interested in him but would prefer to wait to judge his comeback for SL and follow up with a bid in January or next summer.

If someone makes a move for him before the end of the transfer window it might spark Fergie into moving for him at that time too (as was the case with Rooney and Ronaldo, for example)

Yeah I don't post in this forum much but honestly, what's the point mate ? That joke wasn't funny yesterday when used in the Hamsik thread and it isn't any funnier now.
A lot of posters need to get off their high horses though. The Ozil saga was the main transfer story of the summer, with a lot of clubs linked with to his signing. Thats the main reason it led to so much discussion and speculation. Yes thee was stupidity but transfers are part of Football. Caftards who want United to sign the best players, theres nothing wrong with.

Was it though? I never for one second thought he was coming here. Vidic siging a new contract is my transfer "saga" of the summer but each to their own i suppose

It was still the biggest transfer story, I never thought he would be coming here, and for me the Vidic signing was better, and the Bebe signing intrigues me more. The Ozil transfer was still the biggest this summer yet. The transfer forum isn't just about who United are going to sign.
