Steven Defour

It was still the biggest transfer story, I never thought he would be coming here, and for me the Vidic signing was better, and the Bebe signing intrigues me more. The Ozil transfer was still the biggest this summer yet. The transfer forum isn't just about who United are going to sign.

Think thats the difference between alot of United fans on the CAF, might even go on to say its a generational thing. I dont see alot of the match going fans giving a rats arse about what everyone else is doing.

Just my opinion but Uniteds transfers will always be the "biggest" story of the summer for me.

First sentence is a very strange statement. Fair do's on the second one.

A lot of posters need to get off their high horses though. The Ozil saga was the main transfer story of the summer, with a lot of clubs linked with to his signing. Thats the main reason it led to so much discussion and speculation. Yes thee was stupidity but transfers are part of Football. Caftards who want United to sign the best players, theres nothing wrong with.

That's a fair point about people getting on their high horses about muppetry - but the Ozil thing this summer really took the biscuit.

At least with other long tedious sagas, there was solid information about the story. Most of the Ozil thread was based on nothing, it was a bit bizarre.

Another thing that really feckin gets on peoples tits is the idea that Utd are doomed if they don't sign a particular player.

I've seen absolutely nothing of this lad, but my completely uneducated opinion of him is that he's a poor man's Hamsik.

Different sort of player.

Getting there. Played against Real Madrid last week. Put in an ok but quiet perfromance.

He's playing again, but is still looking for his best form (just like the rest of Standard). He did score two goals in 4 games already, even though he hasn't had a great scoring record in previous seasons, so that's promising for this season.

Against Real Madrid he looked like the only player they had capable of quick one touch passing.

Sky site reports that we are weighing up a move for him but, there is nothing in the article in terms of quotes or how they came to that conclusion other than the continued problem of no Hargreaves.

Skysports.com understands Manchester United are weighing up a move for long-term target Steven Defour.

The Standard Liege midfielder has attracted the interest of United in the past with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson even sending a letter to the player last year to wish him a speedy recovery after he suffered a serious foot injury.

A number of clubs across Europe have been credited with an interest in Defour, but United are keen to lure him to Old Trafford.

In a bid to steal a march on their rivals United could step up their interest in the Belgian international befoe the close of the transfer window.

Defour has previously expressed his desire to move to England and United could be in the market for a new midfielder as doubts continue to surround the long-term future of Owen Hargreaves.

I wont be surprised if we end up signing a midfielder.

Not judging that, he is the captin, can't say of sin him play at all so can't give an opinion however he does look very industrial like from clips.

Well I have and "play a bit" obviously isnt hyperbole. Dont think he'd exactly be a phenomenon if we got him, but a solid signing who can pass the ball about a bit when Scholes isnt available. And at a good age to improve at the club.

He'd be a smart signing this summer if we dont have anything special planned for when Scholes retires. If we arent willing to pay say £20 million+ on his replacement next summer and buy the next "Great" Manchester United midfielder, then signing Defour as the next "good" Manchester United midfielder is okay by me.

And lets just say that our transfer activity in the past few seasons doesnt fill me with confidence that we'll be willing to pay for genuine article players to replace Scholes and Giggs when they are gone.

I think his desire is what really makes me have affectionate towards this player and his will to win, I was watching a segment (I think it could have been Champions League Magazine) and his team mates said his will to win was unbelievable.

Soccernet also picking up on this story. Steven Defour to United because of Hargo's injury problems. Any thing from The Twitter?

Soccernet think has just picked up whatever Sky reported - and bet Sky just picked up someone elses story. More and more even the more reputable news sites just regurgitate other people's speculation - probably fear of being scooped if is real and being asked why they didn't know about it.

It's all coming from some paper in Holland. Which is probably also owned by Murdoch.

Manchester United will continue to monitor Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour with a move in the January transfer window a possibility.

Sir Alex Ferguson rates the Belgian midfielder highly and is keen on keeping tabs on him this season.

Ferguson, who sent Defour a 'get well soon' letter when the Liege midfielder broke his foot last season, has long term doubts over the future of Owen Hargreaves.

Defour, 22, is seen a potential replacement for the permanently crocked Hargreaves with his stamina and tough-tackling style assets Ferguson admires.

The United manager opted against making a move for Defour this summer having already spent over £20m on Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez and Bebe but talkSPORT understand he will continue to monitor Defour.

talkSPORT exclusively revealed last month that United were interested in Defour but he wanted to remain in Belgium for the time being.

But a source close to the player said: "United were interested in Defour but there was no official bid. He wouldn't have moved this summer any way.

"Beyond that, we will look in January and assess it then. United remain keen on him, for sure."

Wiki described him as though tackling but will he be tough enough for the PL? I mean he looks a bit lightweight.

Anyone over here have ever watched him over a whole match or two?

Yup and he could do a job for us. Doubt very much we'll get him though.

Standard Liege Expect To Lose Steven Defour To Manchester United - Goal.com

Standard Liege Expect To Lose Steven Defour To Manchester United

Defour's agent confirms the player could move to the Premier League as early as January.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson looks set to negotiate a deal in January with Standard Liege for the signature of Belgian star Steven Defour.

The 22-year-old has been linked with the Old Trafford side for the past 12 months, as Ferguson believes Defour could be a perfect successor to ageing midfielder Paul Scholes.

The Standard captain won the Belgian Golden Shoe award in 2008 and has been a prominent figure for both his club and country.

Defour's agent Paul Stefani validated the transfer speculations in an interview with Sport.co.uk, and believes that the player could fill the boots of Paul Scholes should he move to Manchester United.

“Yes I think he can play this position, it is natural for him. But it is not up to me to decide if he can play in that position.”

“It is very early in Defour’s return from injury, and it is early to talk about a transfer, but January is a possibility for him.

“He is playing very well and is the leader of the side, everyone is very impressed with him at the moment. So you never know in football, a move could be possible.

I think I have seen him play once in the Champions League and that is the height of it so don't know all that much about him.

If he has the talent people are saying he has then he could be a good option that would come a lot cheaper than some of the more extravagant players being linked.

I would imagine that if Fergie has been in contact with this player for some time then it is inevitable that he will be a United player in the next year.

Where does that agent mention United?
