Does it just come down to genetics in the end? some people just not susceptible to it? Seems to be the same with lots of illnesses. You have something really horrible, share a bed with someone and they just don't catch it. It's weird!

I think that's part of it. It's long been noted that some people with TB and Leprosy for example would not pass it on to their spouses, they seemed immune.

Yup bizarre! Unless I literally caught it the day I got the symptoms. Barely saw my family that day and have isolated since. I don’t know.

Or literally like you said there’s something to do with genetics. Maybe I’m genetically not a super spreader. Or the people I’ve been in contact with are more immune.

Exactly this! Incubation could be short or long and testing is less reliable during this period.
 
If anyone wants my day by day diary:

Day 1 - felt a bit wiped out. Very slightly. I still went by my normal day, didn’t cross my mind I had Covid. Still gymed.
Day 2 - also the first day of lockdown. I realised I couldn’t taste my dinner. I isolated as soon as I thought I may have Covid at my parents house.
Day 3 - had my test. Feeling fine. Taste is coming back. Smell still gone.
Day 4 - tested positive, everyone I came into contact with got the test. They found out in the evening they’re all negative. Smell coming back. Breathing slightly shortened. Not sure if it’s in my head though. Smashed out the indoor cycle twice today.
Day 5 - breathing is better. Full of energy. Taste and smell back. Will smash out more indoor cycle in a bit.

My sons wife tested negative the day he tested positive. Two days later she tested positive.

My household has been sat waiting for symptoms to start feeling we were certain to have it, having baby sat for my grandson who also had it for hours and hours earlier in that week. 12 days in and none of the four of us has any symptoms.

Its unfathomable.
 
A question from newbie @BFernandes:

My wife has tested positive, I tested negative, but we both have continuous cough and difficulty breathing. I have even taken 2 tests as I felt I may have either not done the test correctly or the virus hadn't yet build up in my system to a degree where it's detectable.

Is there a possibility I had covid a few weeks ago so would no longer test positive but still have the after affects of a chest infection?

So from what I’ve seen from my friends back home it’s still not been taking seriously, people walking all around town etc. Is that fair or am I being a curtain twitching grandpa?

The covid swab we recommend getting first 5 days after symptoms, false negatives can happen. In the context of wife having covid I would say both have covid.
Continous cough is to be expected, so is difficulty breathing but the later is more worrying (especially if any chest pain is involved).

Main issue is how severe the breathing difficulty is, whether its got them doing less activities and how much, is the breathlessness exertional or at rest? Best thing would be to ring the GP or 111 as its Sunday and they can both have vitals checked at a covid hot hub.

If symptoms persist then both can be referred to long covid clinic as well now but might depend on local availability (most places have them)

Not seen a numbers update in a few days:

5th Nov: 24, 138 cases and 378 deaths
6th Nov: 23, 287 cases and 355 deaths
7th Nov: 24, 957 cases and 413 deaths

The death rate, sadly, is where we were at late May, hopefully it doesn't keep moving like this as otherwise in 2-3 weeks we will be hitting the 500+ a day.

Also, sadly, by the end of this week we will reach 50,000 deaths since this began
(within 28 days of +ve result)

My wife was in close proximity to her Tues-Thurs. She’s just been for a test as a largely precautionary measure.

My wife’s work is expecting her in I think. Fact she’s 11 weeks pregnant I’ve told her to tell them to piss off.

Surely anyone in close proximity should be isolating for at least a week?

Yeah I think the gov advice would be for your wife to isolate for 2 weeks from the last time she was with her colleague who tested positive.

Also be cautious with any test result your wife receives. If she's taken it shortly after spending time with her colleague there's the (slim) potential for a false negative.

But yeah, absolutely shouldn't be going into work in her condition. Especially if she's able to be productive from home.

Covid-19 new cases now running at over 125k per day in the USA and accelerating. At that rate, they'll soon be approaching 1 million new cases each week!

Makes you think about whether people are unluckier or less paying attention to the guidelines 2nd time around or maybe just more rife. Whatever it is no one can deny it

At our place you stay at home unless you have got a negative test to prove you haven't got it, if you can't get a test you stay at home for 10 days.

That's just poor from her employer, zero consideration for their employees well being.

Different pattern I think. I had three family members die in the March/April peak with infections caught late February/early March. One "hospital acquired", one who probably brought it back from holiday in Spain, one who probably caught it from a family member coming back from a skiing holiday in Italy. A friend's dad died in a care home with it as well, again probably hospital/clinic acquired.

When the March/April lockdown started, it hadn't moved far through the community - it was a thing of care homes, hospitals and holidays. So it was easier to know who to avoid, and easier to stay home because the kids were home etc.

Now we're seeing something wider spread in the community, and anyone working/travelling/socialising or in education in the North in particular is at risk of bringing it home.

It's too late and I am too lazy to plot the log graph for the number of cases that will be expected by Jan 2021, but I see Trump pouting and not doing anything, and the US may reach 200k cases a day by then.
I hope that Biden and his task force will have some plans in place immediately from Jan 2021.

I have a simple life. Work from my laptop. So I’m either at home or at the gym (either in a gym class or at the business hub there). I clearly got it from the gym. Other possibilities is something random like the post man, Deliveroo driver.

I’m feeling pretty good to be honest. If Covid wasn’t around, I wouldn’t think anything of it and be carrying on with my normal life. I’m feeling light symptoms like shortness of breath, slight headache, but nothing enough to really bother me.
 
The contact tracing app just notified me that I was in close proximity to someone who tested +ve. Now the wait begins to get tested. I have a thesis submission deadline in 7 weeks and this is the last fecking thing I needed. :nervous:

I agree. Not sure if there’s anything I can point to? She’s been told to isolate tomorrow and they’ll see what happens. She was sat in a small office with this woman for hours on Thursday. Not sure technically within 2 metres or what have you but it’s concerning!!

Good to hear. I always get a wee bit jealous of anyone who gets a mild dose. Shitty to have to self isolate but must be good to get it over with. You’ve basically jumped the queue for a vaccination!

Exactly that. Always the fear of getting it and it really affects you. Like you said, hopefully gives me a bit of immunity.

A bit of background on myself, I’m 30 years old in the best physical condition I’ve ever been in. I’ve lost 25kg in the past 15 months. So I wonder if this has helped fight the virus?
